20.01.2022 #IndigenousEducationChampion Alberta Hornsby on how Indigenous knowledge can improve remote education. We tend to think of science as a Western concept but as First Nations people, we have practiced science, as in processing poisonous foods, as in understanding the seasons, as in reading things by the stars and in language, we have the language to describe the geography of the land. Id like to see more of that included in our remote schools so the kids can see its not ...that our knowledge is inferior to Western learning its as important. 17.01.2022 I cannot say enough about the DI curriculum, because my grandchildren went through that. The teachers are made more accountable for what they teach, and they’re not just pushing kids through the system as you see in most public schools and I’ve worked in a few public schools, I’ve seen it. I think in remote areas it should be mandatory, or given the option, of doing the DI curriculum. How can education be improved in your community? 16.01.2022 We all need a routine from the very beginning of our life. If you dont have a routine then you dont have the capacity to organise your life. Thats one thing I like about education, it gets you into a routine. Join the conversation, post your own education story using #IndigenousEducationChampion.

16.01.2022 Cheryl Cannon, the Hope Vale Campus, Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy attendance officer, said the videos were promoting learning both inside and outside of the classroom and not just for the school students. "Theyre watching at home as a family; younger siblings are at home being exposed to it," Ms Cannon said. "The students from the school here, they pretend to be the teachers so theyre teaching their younger siblings by copying the video and its just great fun ...for them. "Especially for the younger parents [they] didnt grow up speaking it like I did. "[Theyre] being exposed to it too because their children are watching it at home everyone watches it as one."

10.01.2022 #IndigenousEducationChampion Ronaldo Guivarra of Mapoon explains the importance of culture education to him. A lot of the stuff that I do personally is cultural revival I actually took [the kids] to Laura [Dance] Festival for the first time... I just noticed that the children and the community itself it instilled this pride within them - they came together and there was this natural process again happening of culture being passed down from elders to the youth. So it encouraged both the community elders and the children to participate in something like this that builds up their pride. And I thought that was major and it inspired me to learn other things too." Why is culture education important to you and your community? Share your story using #IndigenousEducationChampion

09.01.2022 Calling all Guugu Yimithirr people! You are invited to our language video screening on Friday 9 October in Cairns.

08.01.2022 Education became important to me through my mother. My mother wasnt allowed to be educated past year 5, she had to go into domestic service, but she vowed one day that she would become better educated and have a better position in the world, in her town, in her community, and she achieved that, she went to college and she became a teacher and has been one for over 20 years. So it was obvious that she would push us toward education as well because that gave us a lot of freedom, and knowledge is power. Why is education important to you? And how do we get there is the challenge We need to have a strategic approach to meet those aspirations and the dreams and visions of our children.
