12.01.2022 We exercise regularly, munch on organic muesli bars and sip on our kombucha before going into a session of yoga. Many of us aim to lead a healthy lifestyle but what we don't realise is that there is sugar lurking in many of the processed foods that we choose. All this sugar could undo the good that we do. How savvy are you at understanding how much sugar is actually present in some supermarket staples? It's Dental Health Week this week and the focus for this year is to help... everyone make healthier choices at the supermarket by educating us on how to read a food label and understand what daily sugar consumption looks like in relation to the food that we eat and how it negatively affects our dental health. Figures show that the average Australian consumes 14 teaspoons of sugar a day, a whole lot more than the WHO recommended six teaspoons for decreased risk to tooth decay. Apart from limiting our sugar intake, the Australian Dental Association recommends: Brushing for two minutes, twice a day with a soft toothbrush - You will be alarmed to know that only 50% of Australians brush twice a day. Flossing - It removes the plaque between teeth that the toothbrush cannot reach which may cause decay or gum disease. Go to your dentist! - It is not enough to pop in to say hi every five years because "my teeth don't hurt". It is recommended that you visit every six to 12 months for a preventative checkup and clean. Avoid snacking between meals and if you have to, choose vegetables and dairy products.
