25.01.2022 It is interesting that we are currently having a bit of a national debate on the freedom of the press. Here is a snippet from a very insightful 1860 report published in the Adelaide Observer giving some insight into the 'un-official' reasons as to why the Marine Board decided Port Elliot was a 'ship-trap'...

25.01.2022 I had to head to Adelaide - an hour ago it was 26 in Goolwa and gorgeous. Wowser!

25.01.2022 In the context of putting water into a modern perspective, when Pullen surveyed the mouth in 1841 his chart shows the channel width as 1/8 of a nautical mile - around 225 metres. The 10 spans of the Hindmarsh Island bridge - end to end - totals 319 metres, so the actual water under the bridge is a good representation of the 'original' width of the mouth.

23.01.2022 The March of the Murray Mouth (1840-1966-2019). In 1917 an international consultant provided 9 options to the SA Government for a Southern Seaport - two of these involved cutting a port entrance through the dunes near Goolwa. Take a boat trip to the Murray Mouth on the SA Maritime History Cruise to discover why nature will eventually move the mouth there anyway!

23.01.2022 A Xmas message to our politicians in QLD, NSW, Vic & SA. It's the start of summer, and there are NONE of the 127 gates open at the Goolwa barrage, so the water flowing through this fishway pretty well represents the ENTIRE output of over 6,500km of river system....

13.01.2022 Nice to see an Aussie influence this year for the Christmas Lights cruise at the Coorong Quays on Hindmarsh Island. Cruises operate Friday and Saturday evenings during December.

13.01.2022 When exploring the Lower Lakes you get some unique views of the landscape as seen by Charles Sturt way back in 1830. From Boundary Creek looking north is Mt Barker, looking south is the Coorong sand dunes.

09.01.2022 Call Adrian to book your next 'experience'!

06.01.2022 It is generally accepted that 'Goolwa' is the aboriginal word for 'elbow', yet here is an 1867 document, containing over a thousand Ngarrindjeri words, and 'elbow = kuhi', which sounds nothing like Goolwa!

04.01.2022 I'd like to think that this final search for his body is something that would have amused Flinders! All of our early sea-faring explorers, be they Dutch, French or British, were simply extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. The 1802 Encounter of Flinders & Baudin (just off the Goolwa coast) is often simply thought of as a competition between warring nations - hoever it is much more of a story of remarkable people (scientists as well) who simply want to know more about our world - and risk their own lives to do so. Amazing. We have the SA History Festival coming up in late April and May 2019 - come down to Goolwa and take a boat cruise to learn all about our sea and river Captains (not just the famous one's like Sturt!) as well as the history of the river, the Ngarrindjeri & the once flourishing Port of Goolwa!
