25.01.2022 A message from Chief Officer Mark Jones QFSM: Yesterday saw the first significant fire weather for the 2020-21 Fire Danger Season. The CFS and MFS responded to ...hundreds for fires, most of which were initiated by lightning strikes. The majority of the fires were expertly extinguished due to the fast response of our state’s firefighters backed by rapid deployment of aerial support on the larger incidents. Whilst this is the first bushfire test of the season, both fire services continue to work together to deliver high quality safety services to the public across the state. I would also like to thank those who operated Farm Fire Units who did an excellent job putting out smaller fires on their properties, without the CFS needing to attend. These fires serve as a timely reminder that the weather and nature will continue to present challenges to the safety of South Australians. The Fire Services of the State recognise those challenges and prepare to face them together in the best tradition of the emergency services. The CFS alone responded to 163 fires, with over 200 call outs for other emergency responses, including road crash rescue and trees down. Thank you to all of our volunteers who responded to incidents yesterday, and to the members of public who heeded our messages and helped us to keep you safe.

25.01.2022 It’s not over just yet.

24.01.2022 Christmas is here and so is the school holidays. Please take care on our roads and be patient and courteous to other road users. Taking an extra 10 mins to get to your destination, could be the difference between arriving or us meeting out on the road. We wish everyone a safe and merry Christmas this year and we hope enjoy your stay in Goolwa.... Regards The Goolwa Fire Station. (picture below was a training exercise)

23.01.2022 Fire hazard reduction is everyone’s responsibility: It’s never too late to prepare your property for a bushfire. Maintaining gardens and grass around your home ...is a good start to making your home easier to defend from an approaching fire. Grass near your home that is taller than 10cm should be cut and maintained during the Fire Danger Season. We recommend you use a whippersnipper with a cord, not a metal blade, to reduce your risk of creating sparks that may start a fire and follow the precautions recommended when using machinery during the Fire Danger Season (see link below). If you see overgrown grass or vegetation in your community that poses a risk to homes, and you are unable to get it reduced or removed, call your local council’s Fire Prevention Officer to see if it can be attended to. When the land is privately owned, councils can direct landowners to remove the hazard or be fined. If the hazard is on council or State land the clear-up may be listed on works to be attended to, or may not be known about, and your local council Fire Prevention Officer may be able to advise you to when it will be tended to. If you see a fire call 000. To find out what you can and can’t do during the Fire Danger Season, see the CFS website here: https://cfs.sa.gov.au/bans-an/what-can-i-do-what-cant-i-do/ To find your local council, visit the Local Government Association SA website here - https://www.lga.sa.gov.au/sa-councils/councils-listing See more

09.01.2022 Fire Danger Ratings are an indicator of how dangerous a bushfire could be if it did occur. It is not a predictor of how likely a bushfire is to occur. Do you know what the different ratings mean?
