25.01.2022 DOWNS LIFE MEMBERSHIP Congratulations to long serving Emu and Downs Rugby Volunteer Mike Dillon, who’s years of service have been rewarded with Life Membership to Downs Rugby. Dillo played over 300 games for The Emus, and since hanging up the boots has been an important part of the Club. He’s spent years of managing teams and mentoring forwards as a scrum coach. In recent years Dillo has been a very successful coach of The Downs, and South QLD Colts teams. Already a Life Member of the Emus, this is another achievement to add to his list of accolades. Well deserved Mike Dillon!

25.01.2022 The day I tried to tackle an emu We had a solid rugby squad that year From full back to hooker we held our own So we were confident as we boarded the bus... To play the Goondiwindi Emus at their home The 6 hour bus trip didn’t phase us Nor the dozen schooners consumed the night before But as we stepped off at Riddle Oval We knew we were in for a hard game for sure The field was pristine and immaculate Irrigated from the mighty McIntyre The away teams sheds were clean and stark The home teams shed was full of fire The canteen was fully stocked and fresh And run like a well oiled machine The grand stand was packed an hour before kick off A crowd the likes Id never seen The baying of the local crowd Didn’t phase us as we ran on We bent them in the first scrum Which was the only thing that day we won The black and yellow hit full flight Feathers, beaks and flashing feet There were props throwing cut out passes Wingers cleaning out with no retreat They were the hardest bird I’d even seen Let alone tried to catch We tried the best we could to raid their nest But they knew how to protect their patch They pecked and pulled and prodded They fluffed and brimmed and tore After 15 minutes of the onslaught I wasn’t sure that I could take much more They jagged and jived and hustled Like a flock of rapid black and yellow bird When the half time whistle blew It was the sweetest thing I’d ever heard We headed back to the dressing sheds By half time the score was 30 nil We’d been out played and over run But we had 40 minutes of pain left to go still Then our captain raised his weary voice To try and inspire a second half come back We’re echidnas boys, not running birds Let’s keep the ball within our bristled pack So from the second half kick off We kept the ball in close and tight We rumbled and rucked and rammed To try and keep the emus from taking flight We clawed back 20 hard earned points With the ugliest rugby one has ever seen Our forwards where bleeding and exhausted Our backs with jerseys clean With 10 to go we thought we had their feather From a try scored from a rolling maul We thought we had those emus plucked So we decided to send the backs a bit of ball And then in a flurry of feather and footwork They pounced like a menacing horde They piled on 4 unanswered tries Won the game with a depressing score board The local crowd erupted They never doubted their emu pride They clapped us off with respect Knowing how hard we fought and tried We even lost the boat race We could hardly stand let alone beer consume We were a beaten, bled and defeated side As we sat around our dressing room But then in popped an emu head With a few cold cartons of recovery ale We are all heading down to the Victoria Hotel If you boys want to join us before you set sail So we shared some laughs and many beers In the true bush rugby way Our bus driver wasn’t all impressed When it was midnight before we ended our stay And now my rugby days are behind me I still look back with memories fond and true And I still have some scars to remind me The day I tried to tackle a Gundi emu.

25.01.2022 The Emus would like to extend our deepest condolences to Jeff and the Cairns family, following the passing of Lyndell. Lyndell spent time on the committee in the late 80’s and early 90’s as secretary and treasurer. In 2016 she became an honorary Life Member when Jeff was awarded Life Membership. Lyndell was always a keen supporter of the Emus and her happy, bright face was often present at both Home and Away games. She will be sorely missed by many. Wife to Jeff(Club Legend)..., Mother/Mother in Law to Sean, Teisha, Jodie and Sam Tweedy, and Grandmother to Tilly. 16.01.2022 To our loyal and valued Emus Players, Supporters, Sponsors & Members. Due to the QLD Government’s restrictions for Covid 19, it is with heavy hearts the Emus Committee have decided to no longer participate in the Downs Rugby Senior Men’s Competition for 2020. Though the Road map to easing restrictions for sporting clubs has eased some restrictions as recently as this week, the player and supporter numbers permitted to attend games and training is unlikely to return to the ...level we can successfully operate, both logistically and financially. Further, we do not want to encroach on the time and effort required from many for the upcoming harvest, if our season was to run later in the year . Our proximity to the NSW Border adds further complications, and limits our player’s and supporter’s opportunities to freely participate with our Club, as they have since 1964. At this stage, the opportunity to play and train for Ladies 7s remains on the table, if a competition can be raised. The Junior and Teenage Rugby organisations are independent to the Senior Men’s, and their respective Committees will make their own decisions in coming weeks. We love our Rugby and remain a proud Club. I will be in contact with our generous and valued sponsors to discuss our position and look forward to once again being a dominant force on the Darling Downs Rugby scene in 2021. Regards Doug McDougall GRUFC President

11.01.2022 Please see below from Gaven Head QRU. This affects the Emus: any further updates and information will be relayed as we receive them. Regards Doug McDougall GRUFC - President ... .......... Queensland Rugby Union statement regarding community Rugby and COVID-19 Following the announcement by Rugby Australia this afternoon relating to COVID-19 and community rugby across Australia, Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) will suspend all affiliated and sanctioned community Rugby competitions - including training - until Saturday, 2 May 2020. The sanctioning of competitions is one of the QRU’s key responsibilities, along with full compliance with our public health responsibilities around grass-roots Rugby. During this time, the QRU is encouraging clubs and other affiliated bodies to follow public health information and procedures regarding containment of the spread of COVID-19, from the World Health Organisation, Australian Federal Government, Rugby Australia and Queensland Health. There are immediate logistical issues for clubs affiliated to the QRU, meaning clubs would often exceed the mandatory Federal Government mass-gathering policy. The recommended suspension would leave a window from Saturday 2 May through to Saturday 12 September 2020, preserved for local club competitions to be played, if circumstances allow. Schools Rugby governance will continue to sit with the relevant principal and associated administrations. QRU CEO David Hanham said: This public health emergency we’re working through is unprecedented and today’s announcement on community Rugby takes into account all the relevant information provided by public health bodies, government and Rugby Australia. We’re putting in place policies and procedures that don’t place players, volunteers, staff and other stakeholders at unnecessary risk. This moratorium on community Rugby also allows the QRU time to plan at the community level and implement new participation/competition structures that would allow Queenslanders to participate in Rugby within the designated window, should circumstances allow. We will continue work with our clubs and affiliate bodies on measures to assist them during this challenging period, we’re mindful that this global heath-crisis is bigger than sport and the health and welfare of the communities of Queensland remain our priority. Ends Regards Gaven Head General Manager Community Rugby Queensland Rugby Union

10.01.2022 COVID 19 UPDATE* Community rugby will not resume until at least June 1st, after a new announcement from Rugby Australia this morning. In a statement released today, Rugby Australia confirmed that matches, training and face-to-face education programs would all be pushed back for at least another two months.... Community and club competitions were already pushed back until the start of May but in the three weeks since that decision, the coronavirus pandemic has only had further impact.

02.01.2022 OLD BOYS DAY - ROUND 2 - April 17th 2021 Calling all supporters, especially Emu OLDBOYS. Our annual Oldboys day is coming up. The Emus will be taking on our old country cousins the Condimine Cods in A & B Grade, and The Chinchilla River Rats in C Grade. Grab an old team mate and come down for a great afternoon....
