25.01.2022 Did you know that thoroughbred racing began in Tasmania in 1813? The races were mainly match races and the track was on the Government Farm at New Town. Incredibly the races were the best 2 of 3 four mile heats.... Now that's a true staying test! #FlashbackFriday
25.01.2022 You’re not in it to make money, you’re just in it to go to the races and have a good time with your mates. Richard Robinson, the man affectionately known as ‘Bear’, has been fortunate enough to part own some very talented horses including last season’s joint Ladbrokes Horse of the Year winner The Inevitable, but it’s the mateship of owning horses that keeps him coming back for more. Racing has been part of Tasmanian life for well over 150 years.... We’re proud of our racing history, and what racing means for our future. Discover more about why Richard and over 5,000 other Tasmanians race: https://itswhywerace.com.au/
25.01.2022 Head along to Ladbrokes Park Elwick tomorrow night for this memorial evening that will pay tribute to one of the industry's greats.
25.01.2022 We’ve got animals that are bred to run and love to run and do love to chase. To some degree, us taking them racing is fulfilling their love. Robyn Johnson, owner, breeder, trainer and president of the North West Greyhound Racing Club (NWGRC) has a great appreciation for the animal and understands how much they love to compete. Racing has been part of Tasmanian life for well over 150 years.... We’re proud of our racing history, and what racing means for our future. 23.01.2022 Did you know in 1986 the Pope came to the races at Elwick? Well not quite! On Thursday November 27 1986 Pope John Paul II held mass at Elwick racecourse for over 10,000 fans. A podium was built over the (now non-existent) drive-in complex cafeteria and projection booth in the centre track. From there the Pope delivered the celebration of the mass for the progress of the people.... That day an estimated 35,000 Tasmanians tried to catch a glimpse of Pope John Paul II.
23.01.2022 Named after the a Russian geographer and explorer who first discovered them Nikolaj Przewalski, Przewalski horses have long been considered the only 'true' wild horse. Przewalski horses are an endangered species and in 1945 there were only 13 left in the world. There are now up to 500 Przewalski's roaming the steppes of central Asia due to successful captive breeding programs throughout the world.... #FactFriday
23.01.2022 Hobart's first trotting program was held on Tuesday 4th March 1884. The races were a mile long and were held on New Town main road. They finished outside Cooley's Hotel. Back in those days it was known as The Horse & Jockey Inn. ... Now that's a cool place for a winning post! #ThrowbackThursday

22.01.2022 Racing has been part of Tasmanian life for well over 150 years. We’re proud of our racing history, and what racing means for our future. 5,000 Tasmanians are employed directly and indirectly in racing, one of the world’s oldest pursuits. Ours is a pursuit unlike any other. It is a pursuit that harnesses and rewards the love, care and awe we have for our animals that are among the fastest species on Earth. It is equal part obsession for the racing animal, sport, business and l...ife-blood of regional communities. We might be the only state in Australia not currently racing due to Covid-19 restrictions, but we will be back. We will be back more determined than ever to show the world that when you race for the love of it, everybody wins. It’s why we race. Discover more: https://bit.ly/itswhywerace_tas

21.01.2022 The King's Troop Royal Artillery is a British ceremonial and mounted horse unit established in 1947. At the end of WWII, due to the mechanisation of the last batteries of horse-drawn artillery, King George VI believed a troop of horse should be retained to take part in great ceremonies of State. Soldiers or "ceremonial gunners" are trained to care for and drive teams of six horses to carry huge 1.5 tonne QF 13 pounder field guns used during WWI. They have no brakes and when... combined with the team of six horses they are about 18m long. Today the guns are used to fire salutes for state occasions and royal anniversaries such as the Queens Birthday as well as providing a gun carriage and team of black horses for state and military funerals including Lady Diana's funeral.

Claire Barker from the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club has captured this touching recount of the couple's foray into greyhound racing.

16.01.2022 Beverley Buckingham was a pioneer and a champion. Bev left school at 14 to become an apprentice jockey. All she ever wanted to do was ride horses. Her first race ride was in October 1980.... It took only four rides for Bev to land her first win on Limit Man. In doing so she became the first woman to to ride a winner against all-comers in Tasmania. In Bev's second season as an apprentice she created more history by winning the Tasmanian jockeys premiership and became the first female to win a state jockeys premiership in the world. In 1984 Bev became the first women to ride in the Caulfield Cup. She was the first jockey in Tasmania to ride over 100 winners in a season 1994/95. #truetassiechamp

13.01.2022 The Arabian or Arab horse is one of the world’s oldest breeds. Over 2000 years ago they were bred to survive the scorching desert sands of the Arabian Peninsula. Many of their distinctive features, including the raised tail, large nostrils and graceful figure, are heat-shedding adaptations. ... This breed of horse is also highly intelligent, responsive and quick to learn which has helped make them one of the most sought after breeds in the world. The original guardians of these horses are the nomadic Bedouin. They call their horses Banat er rih or daughter of the wind. They believe horses give them the power of flight, without wings. #FactFriday

10.01.2022 Media Release | Tasracing The postponement of the opening meeting of the Thoroughbred summer carnival today at Elwick was disappointing for Tasracing, participants and the Tasmanian Racing Club, Tasracing CEO Paul Eriksson said. The track had undergone work during December and while the majority of the track is in good condition, some specific areas did not recover to an appropriate level, he said.... Tasracing, in conjunction with our track partner Strathayr, will be undertaking an investigation into how the damage occurred and why the track did not recover to the level it should. Participants will be compensated under the Postponed and Abandoned race meeting policy. Mr Eriksson said Tasracing had recently appointed a dedicated turf manager who would specifically focus on the turf track at Hobart. Today’s postponed meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 30 December, with race one beginning at 12:40pm on Sky 1. With the Tasmanian Derby and Hobart Cup a month away, Tasracing will be working closely with Strathayr staff who will bring in suitably qualified personnel to assist to ensure the track is ready, Mr Eriksson said.
10.01.2022 Media Release | Tasracing Tomorrow’s thoroughbred meeting at Elwick has been cancelled, with the feature races to be reprogrammed as soon as practical. The decision follows an inspection of the thoroughbred track by trainer and jockey representatives, the Tasmanian Racing Club, StrathAyr, Tasracing and the Office of Racing Integrity.... While the repair work undertaken has been successful and the track could have been ready for tomorrow’s meeting, it was agreed not to proceed, taking account of the track’s long-term interests. Further, the thoroughbred meeting scheduled for 8 January will be transferred to Launceston. This will give the Elwick track until 24 January to be ready and in good condition for racing to return. Tasracing CEO Paul Eriksson said while this decision had been difficult, the track is a $12m investment in the future of Tasmanian racing and its longevity needed to be ensured. We are committed to working with StrathAyr to deliver an improved racing surface for participants and the community to enjoy, he said. StrathAyr has added additional resources and Tasracing has employed a dedicated turf manager to assist with the track’s ongoing maintenance. Tasmanian Racing Club chairman Andrew Scanlon said that the Club supports the decision to ensure the track was presented in the best condition for the remainder of the Carnival.
09.01.2022 Greatest ever finishes to a race..... a big statement we know! At The Meadows in Pennsylvania USA on March 24 2009, 5 horses crossed the line almost simultaneously resulting in a three way dead head for 1st. The commentator was clearly lost for words.
09.01.2022 Statement on the Elwick Thoroughbred Track: While there has been significant commentary from various parties regarding the Elwick thoroughbred track in recent days via traditional and social media, it is prudent to make the following points: +The track itself is in good condition with no damage.... +The overall direction in which the track is moving is as the experts expect with no long term concerns for the sustainability of the racing surface. +The issue is a turf problem where it has struggled to recover in a few areas from the heavy wear following the return to racing and trialling during winter. + Recent works carried out in December did not deliver a consistent outcome across the turf surface and left a number of bare patches that were then filled with nine inch plugs which did not develop and stabilise in the required manner. On Monday 28 December Tasracing flew in StrathAyr’s senior track construction and repair expert from Victoria to inspect the problem areas and implement remediation works. StrathAyr also assigned local staff to assist with this work and Tasracing brought additional staff from Mowbray. These works were completed initially in the 15-metre to 28-metre area by Monday evening with some minor additional work carried out on Tuesday 29 December. The remainder of the remediation work was completed by Wednesday morning (30 December). Prior to Christmas, Tasracing appointed a dedicated Turf specialist, Chris Hay, who started with Tasracing on 4 January. Chris’s sole focus will be the turf track maintenance. Chris is a highly respected turf specialist and is sought after in Tasmania and interstate. In addition, StrathAyr staff will be in attendance over the next few weeks to assist Chris in managing the turf surface and modifying the maintenance program to provide the best possible outcomes moving forward. Further, Tasracing has been in discussions with the Moonee Valley track manager, Marty Synan, for some time. Marty and his counterpart from Flemington, Liam O’Keefe, visited the track on 5 and 6 January. Marty has significant experience with these tracks (Moonee Valley is also a StrathAyr track put in 1994/95 and Flemington is a sand track). Following their visit Liam said: Remedial works on the Elwick Course Proper have been completed successfully and the track will be safe for racing on Sunday 24 January. Marty and I look forward to working with Tasracing and Elwick track staff to ensure the track continues to improve moving forward. Marty said: After inspecting the remedial work carried out at Elwick I am confident the meeting scheduled for Sunday 24 January will proceed and the track will continue to improve before the running of the Hobart Cup. Tasracing understands that confidence in the track and the works being performed is a critical industry issue and will hold track walks on 14 and 21 January, to provide trainers and jockeys the opportunity to see the condition of the track.
09.01.2022 Did you know that racing was once conducted clock-wise in Tasmania? In 1925 Ascot Racecourse, located opposite the Elwick Showgrounds, hosted trot races and was the only right-handed track ever in Tasmania. In the late 1930's the venue was closed down due to the Federal Government procuring the land to build a munitions factory that produced bullets for the WWII effort.... #FactFriday

02.01.2022 In 1972 Tasmanian-bred mare Piping Lane emerged victorious at 40-1 in the Melbourne Cup. However, if it wasn't for the keen eye of a passing horse enthusiast Piping Lane may never have been conceived! Mr R.E.Prevost bought the mare Londonderry Air for "tailing sheep and cattle". He was totally unaware that the she was a thoroughbred. It wasn't until a motorist stopped while Prevost and the mare were doing sheep duties and chastised him for treating a thoroughbred in such a m...anner. The advice from the passing motorist was correct and Prevost took Londonderry Air across the road to be mated with Lanesborough. As they say, the rest is history!
