19.01.2022 Due to COVID-19 government regulations on gatherings, we have cancelled or postponed all historical tours and events which included the Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery Diggers Day Tour. A message from the Friends of Gore Hill, The victims of World War 1 are memorialised in many places in Australia and overseas, there are 120 memorialised at Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery. It is particularly moving the way that, although none of these soldiers are buried here, they are joined with t...heir families being listed on headstones. Many of these soldiers have their stories recorded in the Gore Hill Biographies and are reprinted in the Friends of Gore Hill Cemetery Newsletters. Their stories in the biographies are very detailed including addresses (such as Pymble, North Sydney), schools (such as Fort Street, Shore, Barker), occupations (such as Wool Classer, Clerk), their place of employment, (such as Bank of New South Wales, Sugar Planter) and the battles that they fought in (Gallipoli, Fromelles, Pozieres, Bullecourt, Passchendaele, and Villiers-Bretonneux.) They also include place of burial (Villiers-Bretonneux, Fromelles), and in there were no remains places of memorialisation,(I dont understand this) (such as Lone Pine and the Menin Gate.). We hope that this tour will take place in the future. Anzac Day has great meaning in bringing all Australians together. Lest We Forget

19.01.2022 The Cornwell Vault Brewers in Sydney 1887 to 1906. One of the largest and most elaborate vaults in the Cemetery (11 interments, some transferred from Balmain Cemetery). Erected by this family which launched Cornwells Malt Extract, Vinegar, and several sauces, still marketed under their name, currently owned by Goodman Fielder. The founding father, Samuel Cornwell (1813-1883) arrived in Sydney in 1839.

17.01.2022 Our proud ANZAC History Jesse Herbert Taylor was killed on 15 December 1915 only four days before the final evacuation from Gallipoli. He was born in Birmingham... England in 1879 and arrived in Australia in 1909. His occupation was a brass polisher and he had previous military experience in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and in the Boer War. He enlisted as a lance sergeant in the 19th Battalion B Company on 9 February 1915. Jesse Herbert Taylor, aged 36 years, was killed in action 15 December. It was a quiet day and he was the only man to die on the peninsula that day. He was buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery. When his wooden cross was removed, amongst the confusion no permanent headstone replaced it. In 2009 the Spirits of Gallipoli project photographed all AIF headstones and noticed that his was missing and ninety years after his death the headstone was finally placed. He is also memorialised on the headstone of his wifes family at Gore Hill Cemetery. In honour of the soldiers who are memorialised at Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery we feature a daily biography in the lead up to Anzac Day. #northerncemeteries #macquarieparkcemeteryandcrematorium #anzac #anzacday #gorehillmemorialcemetery #diggers #rsl #stayhome #history #cemeterylovers

12.01.2022 Lest We Forget In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky... The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - John McCrae, "In Flanders Fields" #LestWeForget #RemembranceDay #RemembranceDay2020

11.01.2022 Our proud ANZAC History John Cecil Thomson was born 4 March 1894 the son of John and Matilda Thomson of North Sydney, the only son of the family with five siste...rs. Educated at Fort Street Public School, he was a clerk in the Bank of New South Wales and enlisted 8 April 1915 in the 18th Battalion as a Corporal. The unit embarked on 25 June 1915 from Melbourne on board the converted Transport A40 Ceramic. After a brief four weeks training in Egypt the battalion was then hastily sent to Gallipoli and arrived 20 August. On 22 August during the last major offensive at Gallipoli an attack on Hill 60 was launched. On the previous day, 21 August, an Australian attack on the Turkish trenches had stopped short of their target. To continue the assault, the 18th Battalion were raw troops who were not up to dealing with such a hastily conceived and poorly arranged attack. Although the unit went bravely into action at dawn, it was gradually pushed back after half its strength became casualtieshalf of these being killed. John Cecil Thomson was reported as missing. Nine months later a Court of Inquiry heard conflicting accounts of his fate and reported that he was supposed to have been killed in action on the date mentioned. Aged only twenty-one years he has no known grave and is memorialised on the Lone Pine Memorial and at Gore Hill. In honour of the soldiers who are memorialised at Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery we feature a daily biography in the lead up to Anzac Day. #northerncemeteries #macquarieparkcemeteryandcrematorium #anzac #anzacday #diggers #rsl #lestweforget #cemeterylovers #gorehillmemorialcemetery

03.01.2022 In honour of the soldiers who are memorialised at Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery we will be featuring a daily biography for the lead up to Anzac Day since we are u...nable to host our Diggers Day Tour on the 26th April. Theodore Ronald Carson was born 26 September 1895 at Kiewa Pymble, one of three sons and seven daughters of Duncan and Constance Carson. Educated at Barker College he enlisted on 17 August 1914, soon after war was declared, aged 18 [stated on enlistment aged 20]. His occupation was wool classer and his previous military experience was in the 19th Infantry. He embarked from Sydney 18 October on board the transport A23 Suffolk. After training in Egypt from December, the 2nd Battalion H Company took part in the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. Promoted to Sergeant he was part of the third wave to land and the battalion were all on the beach by 9.30 a.m. On 15 June 1915 his father received a telegram stating that his son was missing. It would be a long battle to discover the fate of his son. Finally on 24 March 1916 a military court of inquiry found that on 2 May 1915 Theodore Ronald Carson died at a place not specified and no burial place has been found. Aged nineteen years he has no known grave and is memorialised on the Lone Pine Memorial and on the family headstone at Gore Hill.
