19.01.2022 Have you been getting Mushrooms in your lawn or garden? Here are some interesting facts/information about Fungi in your garden courtesy of Scotts! Has It Been Raining? Look for Mushrooms... It's a beautiful morning after a drenching of rain. You step outside to check out the yard, and there they are. Mushrooms have mushroomed overnight What causes the appearance of these strange growths? You can blame it on the right mix of moisture, shade or cloudy weather, and organic material in the soil. When they combine, it's mushroom time. What Are Mushrooms, Anyway? Mushrooms are fungi, or rather, the reproductive part of fungi that live in the soil. Most of the time, the fungi just stay hidden, breaking down organic material. But, when conditions are right, they burst forth, like desert flowers blooming after a rain. Mushrooms spread spores into the air and then go away when the sun comes out or the soil dries up. You can keep mushrooms from appearing so often by changing the conditions in your yard. If your lawn has standing water or remains damp for long periods after a rain, you soil may be compacted. Aerating your lawn would increase drainage. Better drainage helps decrease the moisture that encourages mushrooms. It also helps to increase the amount of oxygen that gets to the roots of your grass. If you have excess thatch in your lawn (over half an inch), you have a lot of organic material that absorbs moisture and acts as mushroom bait. Dethatching your lawn can help keep mushrooms away. The Effect of Old Trees and Pets If you have an area where a tree used to stand, even if the stump is gone, the dead roots underground may encourage mushroom growth. If the stump is still there, you can have it removed. If it's gone, just keep the area well raked and aerated to improve drainage. Also, pet waste left on the lawn can bring out mushrooms. In Defense of Mushrooms If you have mushrooms, look on the bright side. Mushrooms are an indication that your yard has a lot of organic material in the soil. Mushrooms help break down that organic material, and make your soil more productive. If your shade and drainage aren't real problems, you can always just knock the offending mushrooms over and wait for the sun to come out. If you are worried about the mushrooms in your yard and arent sure if they are safe for your kids/pets check out this website :http://fungimap.org.au/

10.01.2022 These are great tips from Aussie Green Thumb: "If you have not already, now is the time to finish of pruning your dormant plants, especially rose bushes. From late July to August they will start to grow vigorously again ready to absolutely take off once the weather starts to warm up. Remember, try to always prune at a 45 degree angle because this helps the plant heal better and therefore limits the chances of pests or diseases taking hold of your freshly pruned plant. There a...re two other key tasks to complete during August. One is to make sure that you apply a good fertiliser, preferably a slow release fertiliser, to all of your plants and to also make sure you apply a good lawn fertiliser over all your grassed areas. You want your entire garden to be able to take advantage of any late August rains and then the warmer weather which comes around Mid September. The other key task is to ensure that all your garden beds have a healthy layer of mulch. Though this winter has been quite dry in most parts of Australia, you still want to lock in as much of the moisture that has fallen as possible. Once again, the weather does generally warm up in September which means more moisture will evaporate. This is limited by a good 10cm thick layer of mulch. At this time of year your winter vegetables will be starting to come to an end. August is a good month for you to start to decide what vegetables you are going to want to grow in Spring. Some good vegetables to consider for Spring are carrots, lettuce, leeks, onions, spring onions, peas, asian vegetables and beans. You may also like to grow some of your own strawberries." Remember these are all jobs that Gorgus-Lawns can assist you with, give us a call and your lawn and garden can look fabulous by Spring :)

08.01.2022 lawns looking good here, the cooch can become a bit stressed in summer and will begin to seed, a dose of fertiliser and plenty of water should clear this up.

05.01.2022 In the Wollondilly Shire it is not uncommon for a lawn to be covered in frost on a cold Winters morning. Whatever you do, stay off of it! What Causes Frost? Frost occurs on cold, clear nights when atmospheric conditions cause objects, like grass, to become colder than the surrounding air. Why Stay Off It?... When a lawn is frosted, the grass blades are literally frozen. Any activity on the lawn while it is frosty, like walking on it or mowing it, will "break" the grass blade and damage the lawn. It will recover eventually, but it may not fully bounce back until the following spring. The frost dissipates as the sun rises and the air warms up. Sprinklers can sometimes be turned on for thirty seconds or so to speed up the process, especially in the shade. See more

05.01.2022 Our Lawns are loving this rain!! Bob was out in the drizzle last night fertilizing our plants but unfortunately we have a big infestation of SNAILS!! if you find you have a similar issue here is a humane and chemical free way to move those slimy suckers on! By hand: Do a night patrol with a torch/flashlight. The best time is dusk or early morning, especially when it's damp or raining. ours are definitely coming out at night, mostly around our garden beds. Don't use your hand... to pick slugs upit's horrendous trying to get that sticky stuff off. Should you get slimed by mistake, rub vinegar on hands and rinse with warm water. Scoop them up with an old spoon, dump them in a high-sided bucket and scrape them out somewhere where they won't be a pest. A new home in a compost bin or across the road in a wild patch or park will be a humane way to treat them. If there's nowhere else for them but kapow*@!! ... give them a quick stamp with your shoe, or drown them in soapy water or salty water. For more instant killing power, just sprinkle lots of salt on them or squirt with ammonia.

02.01.2022 a few frosts this week, so Gorge -us lawns thought we would let you know some interesting facts about frost! What Is Frost? Frost occurs on clear, still nights. As the air temperature approaches freezing, the surface temperature of plants can dip below freezing, causing ice crystals to form in the same manner that dew forms on warmer nights. Because temperatures vary just a few feet above the ground, frost can form when your thermometer reads above freezing. Freezing tempera...tures may or may not be accompanied by frost. Types of frost include: Hoarfrost is the familiar feathery white frost you see on chilly mornings. It results when water in the air is deposited directly in the form of ice crystals. Rime happens when water is deposited in liquid form through dew or fog which then freezes. Rime has a glazed appearance. Black frost is a term used when frost didnt form, but plants were nonetheless damaged (and blackened) by freezing temperatures. Stay warm friends!!
