25.01.2022 #findthequeen! This is actually really interesting. The first thing I noticed about this hive (hive S-7 Isla Saona for those following along at home) was that it had 14 frames of brood, more bee larvae than any other hive. 12 frames below the queen excluder (henceforth "QX") and two above. So this meant either the QX is broken (which can be subtle enough to not be distinguishable by naked eye) or I somehow have a laying queen above and below. Couldn't find a queen in the two ...lower boxes (which doesn't mean anything, they can be hard to find) but then on the upper side of tho QX I find a queen ... AND THEN A SECOND queen! One has a small green mark I put on her but the other doesn't. Two workers were chastising the marked queen so I removed her for relocation to a queenless hive and left the other who looks beautiful and plump. Conventional wisdom is that you CAN have two queens if one is laying and the other is old and retired, or if one is confined to the very top of the stack and one the very bottom, but in this case both appeared young, it seems very likely at least two were laying in this hive, and they were confined to the same box! Probably the QX is broken but it's possible if not that there's a third queen in it?? See more
19.01.2022 We (I) have decided to take advantage of the traditional leave taking at this time of year to deploy to the firegrounds on a CFA striketeam, and as such will be unavailable to answer inquiries until the 29th. I apologize for any inconvenience.

12.01.2022 Hive with a view! One of our hives yesterday, which was a lovely sunny day! I'm still learning things all the time, and with this hive I've learned that if you put a sign on it that covers up the hand hold it's really annoying! (there's a "caution bees" sign on the front too, since this hive is near a public path, but this leaves only two hand holds on the upper box and they're not opposite eachother! Live and learn!)
11.01.2022 Here is good article about a number of very interesting artisanal honey projects in the US Pacific Northwest.
06.01.2022 We're proud to finally offer a variety of beekeeping services such as managing a hive for you or extracting your hive's honey for you! The specific webpage doesn't look as beautiful as I'd like but hey I'm not a web designer!
