23.01.2022 Easy ways to say I love or care about you There are many ways to say ‘I love you’ - and it is HUMAN 101 to want to be loved. But how many ways do you express it without words? I was recently in a biggish car smash - needless to say I’m fast recovering and feel blessed to be resilient and calm in an emergency (yay for me). Ive also been supported in visible and invisible ways......... The accident has provided many opportunities for personal reflection and in particular it has invited me to notice and appreciate the many ways in which people say I love you/ I care/ I’m sorry/ I appreciate you - in regard to this accident and life in general. It can be way too big and confronting to say I love you but Im now on the lookout for receiving and providing: - A warm and connecting smile; - Giving undivided attention - listening fully; - Giving space and encouraging self care. So many people are crap at looking after themselves; - Phone or text messages including things that make the reader smile; - Flowers/cake/soup at your door; - Encouraging words in a social media post; - People helping you get appointments with your favourite health professionals; - People waving at you when you are out and about: - Encouraging words such as you are looking great today - Really useful practical information (for me recently this was about car insurance; - Meditating / praying for the ideal outcome for a person/ situation (healing circle mediations are great BTW so feel welcome to ask me about a weekly group I belong to that does this). I also remember in my parents business (which I spent way too many hours in) that we had a few customers that would honk the horn as they drove past. It was their way of connecting and saying hello I care about you. Can you add to this list??? And THANK YOU for the love that has been shown to me. Very grateful. The photos are of my smashed car and my NEW car (silver lining). I am very lucky to have been trained in Solution Focussed Brief Therapy - Milton Erickson style. He was always more interested in what is useful and practical to clients. #unstickingyou #openforbusiness YES!!! I an working!!! Book in to see me if you need an appointment.

19.01.2022 MY LATEST E NEWS.... For the blokes in your life and for my men readers. Do men need a different approach to their mental health? It’s Movember. This means moustaches and facial hair, and more awareness of men’s health, including their mental and emotional wellbeing.... There’s a stigma that may stop men from getting help even when they have challenges in life. My goodness, we all know that many men can’t even ask for directions if they're lost. let alone ask for help with sticky situations and difficult emotions. A big warm welcome to male readers. Yay for you! I’m also aware that many readers of this article will be women. You may be reading this for the men in your life: your brothers, fathers, friends, male partners, kids or co-workers. Research on mental and emotional heath services tells us that: Men are at best a third of the service users, which I have witnessed in my therapy service. Younger men are more likely than older men to access professional support for their mental and emotional wellbeing. In my experience, I regularly see male clients who vary in age from 21 to 63. Ongoing stress and relationship problems are the most common reasons men need help. My experience agrees with this too -- however, I would call it 'being stuck' in general. It’s widely understood that men are less likely to talk about emotional and mental health issues. But does this mean that they’re not trying to deal with them? Research in Australia shows that the top health prevention strategies that didn’t involve talking include: Healthy Eating Keeping busy Exercising Using humour Doing something to help another person Spending time with a pet Accepting sad feelings Achieving something Hanging out with people who are positive Distracting self from negative thoughts These activities were described by the study participants as ‘typically masculine’. So how can we support men to look after themselves? Of course it’s great for men to get some help by talking to a therapist. However, only some men might actually do that. We can support the men in our lives by encouraging them to engage in activities like those in the list above. You can help by using encouraging statements, like:It’s great to see you exercising each week or I love seeing you doing stuff that makes you happy Focus on the positive. Support the basics, like good sleep, healthy eating, rest and relaxation, and connecting with people and nature. Finally, it’s useful for men to understand that getting help for their mental and emotional wellbeing is just like approaching a tradie for help with plumbing, a car or electricity that’s not working properly in your house. The best 'comeback' you can ever have is healing your mental and emotional self.
