24.01.2022 Taking a break from the office? Awesome. But dont take a break from cyber security - take the time to wrap your head around some best practices for safe internet use and secure your network, your laptop, your mobile phone, and more. 10 Hot Cyber Security Tips - Think before you app... Review an apps privacy policy and understand what data (such as location and entry to your social networks) it can access on your device before you download. Delete apps you are no longer using. - Own your online presence Not everyone has to know about your travel escapades and summer fun: set the privacy and security preferences on web services and devices to your comfort level for sharing. It is okay to limit how and with whom you share information especially when you are away. - Actively manage location services Location tools come in handy while planning your trip or navigating a new city, but they can also expose your whereabouts even through photos. Turn off location services when theyre not in use. - Get savvy about Wi-Fi hotspots Do not transmit personal info or make purchases on unsafe networks like those in local cafes and hotel lobbies. Bad actors can spoof what may look like legitimate hotspots to lure victims to send traffic such as emails, passwords, and documents through their equipment, and thereby steal data. - Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when idle When Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, they connect and track your whereabouts. If you do not need them, switch them off. - Protect your $$$ Be sure to shop or bank only on secure sites. A web address with https:// means the site takes extra security measures. However, an https:// address is not secure. Yes, fake websites can use HTTPS. - Never use public computers to log in to any accounts Be extremely cautious on public computers in public places like airports, hotel lobbies and internet cafes. However, if you need to log in from such places, make sure you clear the cache and browsing history and delete all the temporary files from the computer. Also, never allow the browser to remember your ID and password. Or just go incognito. - Share with care Think twice before posting pictures that would reveal you are not home or that you would not want certain people (like your parents or employer) to see. In addition, remember to post only about others as you would have them post about you. The golden rule applies online, too. - Lock down your login Your usernames and passwords are not enough to protect key accounts like email, online banking, and social media. Get ready for your summer trek by fortifying your online accounts and enabling the strongest authentication tools available, such as biometrics, security keys or multi-factor authentication.

16.01.2022 A little explainer video on how the Crime Stoppers App works

16.01.2022 Do you or someone you know live in Huntingdale? Then come along on Sunday to meet your Neighbours.

15.01.2022 CHRISTMAS is a time when many people will be getting ready for a well-deserved holiday but before you pack up and head off, make sure home security is part of your travel plan. Its really easy to secure your house and make it appear occupied to substantially reduce the risk of burglary. Take these steps from RAC Security to keep your home safe because the only stranger who should be visiting this festive season is Santa Claus.... All doors and windows are key locked. Telephone ringer volume is turned down so people outside the home cant hear it for extended periods of time. Exterior sensor lights are on. Timers for lights and radio are set to turn on and off in different rooms at times that match night and day patterns so the casual observer thinks someone is home. Power supply to the electric garage door/s is disconnected and the door between the garage and home is locked. Vehicle/s left at the home are secured and keys are not left in an obvious place. Tools, gardening equipment and ladders are locked away so they cant be used to gain access to the home. High-value goods arent visible through windows and hence arent easy targets for opportunistic thieves. Property is engraved or has a visible, permanent mark for easy identification. Photos of valuables have been taken and details recorded to help with recovery if they are stolen and an insurance claim must be made. Alarm system is on and window stickers are in place to warn potential thieves an alarm is installed. The person looking after the property knows how to turn the alarm off and back on, and arrangements have been made to have the alarm monitored for 24-hour protection while away. Trusted neighbours or friends know your travel plans (dates, address and telephone number) and have spare keys so they can deal with any emergencies. Ask if they can park a car in the driveway or take out the bins so it looks like someone is home. Travel plans have not been announced on social media. Ask someone to regularly collect the mail or have it redirected through Australia Post.

15.01.2022 Please have conversations with friends and family about being aware of this. Seems that the number of unregistered installers are on the rise.

01.01.2022 WA ScamNet Alert: Classified ad scams Summer is approaching and lots of people are on the hunt for bargain sporting equipment, camping gear, renovation materials, music events and even preparing for Christmas gifts. As online shopping ramps up so do classified ad scams - using websites like Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or event pages on social media. Buyer beware... Beware of sellers claiming to be in a different state or requiring payment through bank transfer. Victims are being told goods will be shipped to them after they make payment through bank transfer but the goods are never received and its difficult to reverse a bank transfer for a refund. The scammers provide a copy of stolen identification to make themselves appear legitimate. Only pay in cash and view the product in person before you hand over the money. Sellers watch out Sellers have also been stung by scammers posing as potential buyers. The buyer claims they are unable to speak on the phone or meet in person. They pay using stolen credit cards, which are eventually declined by the bank or use fake payment receipts that show payment as pending. Sellers may be requested to make payments to fake third parties, such as a transport company, via electronic bank transfer or an international payment service like MoneyGram or RIA. Tips to avoid these scams Face-to-face is always the best way of handling classified ad transactions - use cash to avoid many of the issues. Only use secure online payment systems if you purchase online such as PayPal or your credit card. Be wary of any seller who only accepts bank or money transfers. See the product in person if buying from a classified seller, or stick to trusted retailers. Do your research and remember - if its too good to be true, it probably is. Check out Gumtree's Safety pages, about Scams to avoid and Types of Scams on Gumtree. If you have been scammed Report scams to website operators such as Gumtree and email addresses used to email service providers. To report scams or ask for further advice by contacting WA ScamNet on 1300 304 054. Visit WAScamNet to read more about how this scam works and get some tips to help you stay safe when buying and selling online.
