22.01.2022 IFR Why is it important ************************** A VFR pilot (who is not IFR trained) must keep out of cloud ... The life expectancy of a VFR pilot in cloud is less than 150 seconds.... Your brain tells you you are flying level in cloud, when you are actually rolling over into a fatal spiral descent vertically into the ground. This can be demonstrated in a swivel chair turning at a constant rate with a blindfold over your eyes. Your brain tells you it is slowing down and stopped when it is not. Stand up and take the blindfold off and you will fall over. (Have someone ready to catch you). This can be explained by a google search on "the semicircular canal of the inner ear ... or as the Bible proverb says "there's a way that seems right to a man but the end is the way of death" Proverbs. 16:25 PRIVATE IFR The next step after PPL is a Private Instrument Rating. It can overcome the problem of clouds over the hills ... where otherwise you have to turn back. It is easy to keep a Private IFR current with constant practise on your lap top computer at home (which is free.) COMMAND IFR The Command Instrument Flight Rating is essential for Commercial Pilots who wish to progress in their Careers, it can be the next step after Private IFR. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION There's much more we can tell you over a cup of coffee at Gostner Aviation. Please call us on 0414788105 David Maddock Head of Training GOSTNER AVIATION

20.01.2022 WISE WORDS FROM THE CFI. When you are landing on a wet runway in particular (it can even apply sometimes on a dry runway) and you apply brakes and feel no response ... immediately take your feet off the brakes, because you are skidding the wheels. Then, as the aircraft slows and the weight comes off the wings, use short jabs feeling for deceleration. The results otherwise are flat spots on the tires quickly followed by a blow out and flat tires. See photo.

16.01.2022 CFI QUESTIONS & TIPS ********************** For all those experienced pilots, let's see how much you know and try to answer both of these questions below. ------------------------------------------------ I was once doing an Instrument Rating Check on a Boeing 747 Captain wanting a single pilot IFR upgrade on the Piper Seminole. I asked him had he checked his aeroplane, he said yes. So I said can you show me the static vent. He said no problem, then after circling the aeroplan...e 3 times he said I have to admit I don,t know where it is. QUESTION 1 ... Can you tell where the static vent is on your aeroplane you normaly fly (upload a photo of it). QUESTION 2 ... Can you tell me what are the flight instrument indications of a static vent blockage? 09.01.2022 DISCUSSION BETWEEN TWO EXPERIENCED PILOTS [David Maddock - CFI reflects on a discussion with his younger brother] ***************** My young brother Stewart, who I taught to fly and is now an Airline Captain on the Airbus, made the following comment to me one day ... STEWART: David the trouble with you General Aviation Pilots are you are too sloppy. DAVID: What are you talking about Stewart ? STEWART: When you general Aviation Pilots are approaching a Non Direction Beacon and the needle starts to drop You say "I'll just hold the heading and pick up the needle on the other side ..." STEWART continued: But thats not good enough ... what we Airline Pilots do .... (said young brother to his older brother who taught him to fly) ... is to watch that needle like a hawk ... and the moment that needle moves, we move ... And in doing that, we maintain the track to within one degree right over the beacon and out the other side DAVID: From that point on I practised that degree of accuracy, which got me into Qantas as a trainee Simulator Instructor.

01.01.2022 Got this Text Message from a recent Student Pilot ====================================== David: "Hi Dmitry any joy on the flying job?" Dmitry: "David, I finally got that flying job. We are all in Russia for the next 5 years. I hope to come back for a short stay in May" David: "I'm excited about that flying job, congratulations. What are you flying?... Dmitry: "Currently in the middle of line training. Still need a safety pilot with me, but I do get a lot of hand flying, which is amazing. Never thought that flying an Airbus A321 would be as easy as flying a little Liberty. You taught me really well." ====================================== Dmitry was a student pilot with Gostner Aviation and completed his CPL and Multi-Instrument Rating in 2014. See more
