24.01.2022 The new coronavirus safety app is an important tool for public health which will accelerate the process of contact tracing and assist in improving social distancing practise and therefore assist in preventing the spread of COVID19. The app has, however, been controversial because of understandable privacy concerns. 19.01.2022 Australian small and medium sized businesses have been hit hard by the COVID19 crisis. It is a global health and economic crisis on a scale not seen before in living memory. The Australian government has announced a $160bn dollar stimulus program to help Australian businesses get back on their feet which has a number of elements called Jobkeeper, coronavirus supplement and other stimulus payments. The main payment which is relevant to small business is the Jobkeeper progra...m. Broadly, it is a payment of $1,500 per fortnight which is open to eligible employers and sole traders designed to keep the connection between employers and employees during the lockdowns imposed due to the COVID19 crisis. The way to apply for the payment is through the ATO’s my gov business portal or through a registered tax agent. When you apply for the payment, you will need to work through the relevant eligibility criteria. The payment is designed to help businesses which have experienced a greater than 30 percent drop in revenue as a result of the COVID19 crisis and in the course of the application, you will need to certify that this has indeed occurred or that it is projected to occur. Also, in relation to each eligible employee that you are supporting with the Jobkeeper payment, you will need to issue a Jobkeeper nomination notice. This is a notice designed to ensure that all employees that are entitled to the Jobkeeper payment do indeed receive it. It is important to be aware that the ATO’s compliance procedures will all apply to the making of this payment and that failure to comply with the procedures could result in punitive action by the ATO.
