23.01.2022 Andrew Nicholls, Death and the Youth #1, watercolour and archival ink pen on paper, 21 x 14.8 cm, 2020, $250.00 Death and the Youth #2, watercolour and archival ink pen on paper, 21 x 14.8 cm, 2020, $250.00 My works for Beauty Salon draw upon the Vanitas tradition, specifically the medieval trope of 'Death and the Maiden', a motif that reoccurs throughout the past few centuries of Western art as a warning about the impermanence of youth and beauty, by depicting a young... maiden being pursued or embraced by death (most often in the form of a living skeleton). My variations on this theme depict a young male friend embracing a skull, and in line with the medieval trope represent a kitsch meditation on the fleeting beauty of youth, and the inevitability of ageing and mortality. The two works mirror each other, again subtly alluding to the theme of vanity. These works have also provided an opportunity for me to experiment with watercolour for the first time; this is a medium I have wanted to incorporate into my practice for a number of years but have not previously had the opportunity to do so. 20.01.2022 One of Gotham Studio's newest members, respected Western Australian artist Thea Costantino is showing a work from her acclaimed 'Ancestors' series this month in Gotham's Peeka-Boo window box gallery. 'Ancestor V' (2012) is part of an eight-part series which considers legacies of empire and colonialism. Resplendent in elaborate headdresses and dressed in second hand clothing in various stages of ruin, these ancestors seem borrowed from military, religious and horror imagery. While satirising nationalistic and imperial nostalgia for a better time by alluding to the violent subtext of such desires, through its title the series also considers the uncomfortable position of belonging to, and benefiting from, a colonial culture. 'Ancestor V' can be viewed in the Peeka-Boo window box at 57 James Street, 24/7 until 15 November.

17.01.2022 Nathan Beard, 'Nois Palette', Clinique 03 Stay Beige (MF/M) Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder on paper, 21 x 29.7cm, 2020 Showing now as part of 'Beauty Salon' at Peekaboo Gallery, 57 James Street, Northbridge. This work is a colour field made from the leftover foundation of my late mother. She had a very particular palette of Clinique foundation which she used for years and would always request this as a present for special occasions like her birthday or Mothers Day. The co...mpact used for this work was gifted to her by me for her birthday last year, and the unfinished foundation was amongst the possessions left in her purse after her sudden passing. Her taste reflected the idiosyncratic influences of her diasporic experience, situated in-between Thai and Australian cultures. Her unique aesthetic sensibility was often expressed in her fashion and her home using humble materials and highly decorative or colourful embellishments which may seem kitsch but were earnestly embraced for their innate beauty and enticing qualities. 12.01.2022 Upcoming studio vacancy - Gotham Studios will have a visual artist's studio space available from 15 February - a small but very attractive corner room on the top floor of our building in central Northbridge, 10.5 square meters for $240/month (inclusive of rates and wifi). The early times of the pandemic lockdown let me see moments of beauty in the strange recalibrating of people's priorities toward protection and care of each other, at the same time the dangers of physical intimacy was further extended into the life-threatening category. The paradox of what should have contributed to even greater atomisation weirdly translated into moments of communion and transgression - maybe that is beauty?

Watsons works mediate on, inhabit or perpetuate the behaviours and emotions of adolescence, among other things. The title of my painting is from a title of a song I love. It makes me think of pretty girls sitting in salons getting pedicures while drinking green smoothies and taking selfies. I can't think of anything more daunting. The thought of someone else touching my feet makes my skin crawl.
