24.01.2022 Julie Holcombe speaks to us on behalf of Target Rifle Australia Julie has been in the sport for 43 years. Her local club helped her realise the sport was somet...hing she enjoyed and got a lot out of, both physically and mentally. As we are getting back to the range, remember safety is the number one priority and with restrictions varying across the country, make sure you contact your local club before heading out. See more

24.01.2022 For the past couple of months we’ve been introducing you to a bunch of wonderful Women Who Shoot. For our ninth week, meet Naomi Jackson. Naomi is a 39-year-ol...d SSAA member and a self-confessed late-onset shooter. Growing up in suburban Sydney in a very anti-shooting household, Naomi didn’t begin shooting until about three years ago at a Try Shooting day at the Silverdale Rifle Range with her husband, Rod. Now, she’s a regular shooter at that range and at the St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre. Naomi is involved in Benchrest (both rimfire and centrefire), Sporting Clays and hunting with Rod and their fur-kid, Indiealthough she says neither of them are very good at hunting so it’s more like a long walk. The business manager says getting involved in shooting has been life-changing for her and she now enjoys nothing more than heading out into the state forest for the weekend to camp and hunt, or spending hours at the range. I find it quite meditative. For that time, you’re conscious of your body position, your breathing and are entirely focussed; there’s no room in your brain for anything other than that target. It’s better than yoga, she says. Naomi says the sport is still relatively male-dominated, but it’s definitely improving. Initially, I was hesitant to head to the range on my own, I just felt out of place, but I’ve never had anything but encouragement from the RO’s. I’ve attended most of the SSAA Ladies Shooting Program events over the last couple of years, volunteering at the most recent event a few months back helping some ladies try shooting for the first time I feel like I’ve come full circle! 22.01.2022 Message from Dennis Claxton, Chairman, NSW Smallbore and Air Rifle Association Inc. Hello everyone, Firstly I hope everyone is keeping well.... In relation to the COVID-19 virus. It is very difficult to keep up with the changing situation and health requirements of the Governments. Viewing the Prime Ministers address after the National Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 24 March, it is clear that even small gathering of people are not allowed other than for work and necessary shopping. This seems to mean that our clubs cannot continue to operate for some time to come. The TRA National Championships at Easter have been cancelled as have all the TRA Postal competitions. This association has cancelled the Dual Range Championship and the Enduro. We will review the situation of the State Championships at a later date. I have raised with the Firearms Registry the issue that members may not being able to meet their lawful shooting requirement if ranges are closed. The registry have taken this on board. We will pass on to clubs any relevant information that comes to us. All the best for the next few months.

21.01.2022 Our thoughts and wishes for the best of outcomes go out to all who are impacted by the bushfires. Looking forward to the 2020 competition season. Stay safe all.

17.01.2022 Hello All, Please see below from NSWSARAI regarding the 2020 NSW State Championships. The NSW Smallbore and Air Rifle Association regrets to inform its members that after careful consideration we have had to cancel the 2020 State Championships due to ongoing COVID-19 spread. The State is continuing to experience outbreaks over various areas and this gives little indication it will stop in the short term.... The health and safety of our members is the reason the council has made this decision. We hope that you all are staying safe and we hope to be back to some competition next year. 12.01.2022 Hi All, Please click on the picture below. Information about 2021 TRA National Championships.

12.01.2022 At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Warren Potent picked up the Bronze medal for Australia in the 50m Rifle Prone event. This marked the first time an Australian... athlete had won an Olympic Medal in a rifle event. All other Olympic medals, by men and women, had been in shotgun or pistol events previously. "I knew I would make the final that day. It was an emotional day as my greatest fan, my mother passed away not long before the Games. I was thinking about her during the preparation time and almost found myself in tears. Shot the match in tricky conditions and finished the qualification in 4th position. Just before the final Miro Sipek told me I was in a great position to get onto the podium. I was calm through the final until about three shots to go, when I realised I wasn't in third position, then I got really wound up. The last three shots could not have been better and I found myself on the podium with Australia’s first rifle Olympic medal. That night I had to spend time by myself to contemplate what I had achieved and how I missed my parents that day! Who would have thought when I fired my first shots at Nepean Rifle Club in the late 70’s that I would end up on an Olympic podium!" Photo: Getty Images

11.01.2022 We wish all our members, friends and family a very Merry, Happy and Safe Christmas and we look forward to seeing everyone next year. Merry Christmas.

10.01.2022 With restrictions to Domestic travel still in place, and much uncertainty surrounding the ability to schedule Events, it takes some creative thinking to continu...e competitive activity. Team Rifle has definitely found a way! Here is an update from Carrie Quigley (Rifle National Talent Coach) on recent Rifle postal competitions! What a fun and inclusive way to remain competitively active! "Rifle shooters are coming back to the range but with current restrictions, it is not possible to have interstate competitions. In South Australia, we have begun a Friendly Postal Competition that is generating interest around Australia. We started with running this for air rifle, three position and 50m prone, and added 20m prone after a request from Tasmania! Each fortnight, athletes shoot a competition on their home range and then send in their scores. It is fun and flexible with one athlete shooting his competitions before heading out to work on an oil rig for 2 weeks through to our High Performance Squad shooting at regular times as part of their ongoing training. The air rifle match has been particularly interesting with shooters from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland connecting via Microsoft Teams and shooting their match alongside the South Australian shooters. The athletes have been able to chat to each other between the match and the final. It has been a great way to stay connected in a time when everyone feels so far apart. We have run the qualification competition of 60 shots air rifle and then a modified rules final, where all athletes shoot the full 24 shots rather than being eliminated. It is great for our developing athletes to experience a full final something they wouldn’t normally experience in a regular competition series. We have seen some amazing scores with Dane Sampson, Tori Rossiter and Jack Rossiter each shooting a score over 629, through to some of our developing athletes getting personal bests and improving with each competition. The Friendly Postal Competition will continue running through to December this year."

10.01.2022 Today was our Club Championship Shoot. This is the deciding contest between all of our 2020 discipline and grade champions. The wind conditions today were terrible, it was extremely windy with 55km p/hour winds with 80km p/hour gusts, and trying to choose the right time to fire was challenging. But a great day was had by all. We finished off the day with a good ol' Aussie Sausage Sizzle and presentation of the certificates to the winners. The Club Champion after a COVID int...errupted year was one of our newest members. CHARLIE WATTS. Charlie is our only active junior shooting member and has only been shooting for just over a year. It took some serious mental concentration to beat not only Australian Representivies but some seriously talented and seasoned professionals. Well done Charlie and we look forward to seeing you compete again next year.

10.01.2022 Today is our Club Championship Shoot. We have 5 contenders. Conditions are terrible, the wind is horrible l, blowing at about 54km per hour. Good Luck to all our shooters.

09.01.2022 COVID-19 Corona Virus Particpation Requirements for Club members Good Afternoon, Please be advised, the Firearms Amendment (COVID-19) Regulation 2020,has recently been introduced and is now in force. This Regulation is here to assist the NSW firearms community in managing their firearms responsibilities while COVID-19 health orders are in place. The Regulation recognises that there are some compliance functions that licence holders may not be able to perform due to soci...al distancing measures, such as club participation shoots. In addition, the Regulation creates exemptions in relation to certain required time periods specified in the Firearms Act 1996, in circumstances where a person is restricted or prevented from complying with those periods because of an order made under Section 7 of the Public Health Act 2010 relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the provisions of Part 3, Modifications relating to participation requirements for club members, I confirm that participation requirements for club members has been extended a further 12 months. However, it must be noted that the provisions of this Regulation are only relevant whilst there is a current order under Section 7 of the Public Health Act 2010 relating specifically to the COVID-19 pandemic. For further information relating to the COVID-19 Coronoa Virus please click on the below link: https://www.police.nsw.gov.au//covid_19_firearms_registry_ If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us Kind regards Clubs, Industry Regulation & Engagement Unit, Firearms Registry.
