22.01.2022 Over the weekend, I took time to check in with my friends in the Muslim community, and take stock of what happened on Friday. It has given me time to pause, ref...lect and grieve, but most importantly to listen. I now feel like I can say this. The hatred and division peddled by alt-right politicians and leaders disgust me, but the act of hate-filled violence we saw last week can come as no surprise. Acts of violence such as this are the conclusion of more than 25 years of normalisation of racism and of white nationalism. We cannot be shocked when every day we witness our politicians giving platform and justification to abhorrent and disgusting views around minority groups, and in particular the Muslim community. Every day we witness the right wing media, owned by people like Rupert Murdoch, with racist and hate-filled headlines, cartoons, opinion pieces and articles that normalise division and fear. We are all brothers and sisters. Australia should be a welcoming and safe country. But it isn’t. And that’s on us - the people who are meant to be leading this nation. What we see instead is our politicians giving platform and validation to ideas that fuel violent acts. It’s on Fraser Anning whose disgusting and Islamophobic remarks have absolutely no place in our country. It’s on Scott Morrison, who so often turns a blind eye to Islamophobia and racist remarks in our parliament. It’s on Peter Dutton, who has built his entire career on the demonisation and dehumanisation of minority groups - none more so than the Muslim community. And it’s on the Labor party, who re-opened our offshore detention hellholes and were complicit in the Liberal parties racist dehumanisation of refugees. It is my responsibility to call out Islamophobia, racism, white nationalism, white supremacy and the demonisation of other cultures when I see it. And it is our collective responsibility to rise up and say simply -- not in my name. I know that together, we can have a country that is inclusive, that champions love over hate and that is welcoming of all faiths. Creating this Australia starts with me and you, coming together to call out those that spread their hate and replace it with our collective love and hope. #notinourname #Christchurch Image | Flowers outside Perth Mosque.

01.01.2022 Something we can all agree on! The LNP's sell-off TAFE must end, and proper public funding must be restored to this vital sector. With Saan Ecker and Ursula Stephens at Gunning Show.
01.01.2022 In the age of climate catastrophe, there are few things more irresponsible than abolishing the Office of Environment and Heritage. This shows just where the Berejiklian government’s second term agenda lies.
