21.01.2022 The Centre for Volunteering NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards Southern Inland Regional Ceremony Senior Volunteer of the Year - Bryan Mulquiney... Bryan Mulquiney, volunteer with Goulburn Mulwaree Council, has won the 2020 Senior Volunteer of the Year Award, at the Southern Inland Regional Award Ceremony of the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, held via Zoom on Thursday 8 October. This is the 14th year of the awards which are held by The Centre for Volunteering. Gemma Rygate, CEO, of The Centre for Volunteering, noted during today’s ceremony that more than 118,000 nominations were received statewide. Bryan has been recognised for his work as a volunteer with the Museums section of Goulburn Mulwaree Council for the last 7 years. His consistent dedication to performance excellence can be demonstrated by the volunteer work he carries out at the Goulburn Historic Waterworks 2 days per week. He is also willing to assist whenever needed at our other museum - Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum. Bryan works tirelessly doing grounds work, maintenance, minor construction work, rubbish collection, gardening and steam engine preparation in readiness for our open "steaming" days. He also volunteers is time on weekends to assist with Museum events, including set up, pack up, providing tours and information to visitors. Bryan has a positive attitude and promotes the Museums in the Goulburn and wider community. The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is a special place known for its historic significance, rarity and beauty. It is a jewel in the crown of Goulburn and provides an idyllic setting for picnics, group bus tours, weddings, walking, bird watching, fishing, canoeing and those interested in history. Without Bryan's special qualities of leadership, resourcefulness, proactiveness, kindness and many practical skills the Waterworks would not be the stunning place that is it. Bryan has been invited to attend the NSW State Gala Award Ceremony in December. #nswvolunteerawards

02.01.2022 Hick, Hargreaves & Co Horizontal Mill Engine Happy 50th Anniversary! 1970-2020 This year we celebrate 50 years since the 1866 Hick, Hargreaves & Co Horizontal Mill Engine made in Bolton, UK came to the Goulburn Steam Museum (precursor to the Historic Waterworks Museum). This outstanding example of an early horizontal mill engine was saved from destruction by Mr E M Baldwin the Managing Director of E M Baldwin Engineering of Castle Hill who held a strong interest in the preser...vation of industrial engineering artefacts. This interest led to the amassing of considerable collection and the subsequent donation of the engine to our museum in 1970 only weeks before he passed away. It is believed the engine came to Australia in 1867 and was used to drive ore crushing battery stampers in the Bell’s Creek gold mine at Araluen. About 1896 the mining venture was abandoned and the engine was sold to the Wright & Bruce wool scour at Botany where it worked until 1948. The engine is of marked historical significance as it is the oldest of only three Hick, Hargreaves engines existing worldwide incorporating Inglis and Spencer Corliss valve gear. In 1975 the engine was moved into the Waterworks Pumphouse building for restoration. This work was undertaken by labour employed under the Regional Employment Development Scheme (R.E.D.) under the supervision of Bruce Macdonald who restored the 1883 Appleby Beam Engine in the late 1950s.
