25.01.2022 A recent study by the Australian Institute of Criminology found that almost one in 10 women in a relationship have experienced domestic violence since the COVID-19 crisis began. For many of these women, the violence started or became more severe during the pandemic. As the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis continue, many families are experiencing stress and hardship, but there is never an excuse for abuse. If you or someone you know needs legal advice about... family violence intervention orders or other related legal issues, we are here to help. Call us on (03) 5831 0900 or FREECALL 1800 310 900 to book a free and confidential telephone advice appointment. Read more about the AIC study here: https://buff.ly/30cBMb2

23.01.2022 85% of people receiving jobseeker payments will fall below the poverty line at the end of this month according to research by ANU's Centre for Social Research and Methods. A fairer and more adequate increase in the base rate of jobseeker is desperately needed to ensure that everyone in our community is afforded the dignity of being able to cover the costs of food, health care and housing. These are basic human rights. We need to #RaisetheRate

20.01.2022 On Monday 27th July there will be a historic opportunity to #RaiseTheAge of criminal responsibility so that children aged 10 to 13 cannot be locked away in prisons. In Australia children as young as 10 can be arrested by police, charged with an offence, hauled before a court and sent to prison. In a single year close to 600 children aged 10 to 13 have been locked away. 65% of these kids are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. In just three days, the Council of Attorneys-General will meet to discuss raising the age. We need your help to make sure they can’t ignore the call to keep kids in community not behind bars. Sign the petition here: https://buff.ly/3eQjnqnIn

19.01.2022 ARC Justice and Goulburn Valley CLC wholly support the Day family’s call for independent investigations of deaths in custody. When an organisation is responsible for investigating their own actions - as is currently the case with investigations of police misconduct - there is no accountability. This system is also completely at odds with public opinion, research and international human rights standards, that a person accused of serious professional misconduct can be investigated by their own colleagues. It is tragic and unacceptable that more than 430 Aboriginal people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991. The Andrews Government must put an end to police investigating the actions of other police. #BlackLivesMatter https://buff.ly/3jkACSD

08.01.2022 The ACT has taken the first step towards raising the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 in line with international human rights standards. As the Executive Director of the Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation Kim Davison puts it, Children deserve care, support and help when they are in trouble not prison cells and paddy wagons. This is a great win for the rights of children in the ACT. Victoria and other states must follow suit. We need a nationally consistent approach to #RaiseTheAge so that all children in Australia remain connected to the community supports they need to reach their full potential.

03.01.2022 March 31st brings some changes to those who are on Jobseeker going from $715.70 per fortnight to $565.70. People have told their stories through the #raisetherate campaign and it's devastating. Regularly skipping meals, going without medication and sleeping rough are just some of the things that happen when you live on $40 a day. Will you help us raise the rate?
