22.01.2022 A special unannounced visitor at Gowrie While outside Bec came to say that there was something very exciting to show us near the front door, we all headed out there and practiced being very quiet so not to frighten what we were about to discover. We all moved very quickly to the front door and discovered it was an Echidna!!! Everyone was so excited by this surprise visitor, we watched him quietly so as not to scare him and he eventually started to wander off and hid under the bushes in the front garden. Some of the children loved his spikes, others loved how he walked and some of the children told us they hadn’t seen an echidna before so they were very impressed.

22.01.2022 Plenty of time left to come in and visit our Open Day! #DiscoverGowrie

20.01.2022 FIRE WEEK AT GOWRIE! Throughout the past week the children at Gowrie NSW Mudgee EEC have been learning about fire safety in the home and educational setting. To cap off a great week of learning we were lucky enough to have the local fire brigade visit our centre and give us a demonstration of some of the equipment they use when fighting a fire or conducting rescues. The children all had the opportunity to use the fire hose and explore the inside of the fire Truck!!

20.01.2022 We are turning 80! This week marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Lady Gowrie Child Centres in 1940 by Lady Zara Gowrie. 80 years on from the opening of one of Australia’s first early childhood centres in Erskineville, Gowrie NSW remains a trusted leader in early childhood education. As we mark this special occasion, we are reminded that we not only honour our history and what has gone before In our 80th year we have a clear vision of who we are and where we are ...headed. "Gowrie NSW is committed to excellence and strives to make a lasting impact on children’s lives." It is our vision that children are active participants in society, their voices are heard, and they are empowered to make a positive contribution in their community and make a difference in the world. Five important Values reflect our spirit, heritage and commitment to achieving our Vision. These Values are Caring, Purposeful, Inclusive, Authentic and Integrity. We appreciate that we too are part of this rich history. As a centre of excellence, Gowrie NSW programs will continue to empower our children to make a difference in the community and lead in the education and advancement of the sector.

17.01.2022 Construction with real tools Outside this week children at Gowrie NSW Mudgee EEC explored the new construction area. They made sure they put their safety hats on before they measure, sawed, hammered and drilled. The children practised their concentration and fine motor skills by hammering and unscrewing nails to their planks of wood to construct buildings, furniture and other designs throughout their imaginative play in this new space . The children are learning about correct and safe use of these real life tools throughout their play as they explored, imagined and manipulated each resource. Allowing children to use real life tools and resources in their play allows them to develop and practise real life skills in their play.

15.01.2022 Living Safely With Dogs In the Wamul room we had special visitors come to us and talk about dog safety. This experience was extremely important for the children to learn when it's safe to touch a dog and when it isn't. The children were engaged with the experience the entirety of the time that the guests were at the centre. Each child participated in all experiences that the presenter offered with to children from singing and dancing, to practising how to safely approach a s...trange dog and ask permission to pet the dog before touching the dog. Living in the rural area that we do, we feel it is important that children learn how to be safe, respectfuland caring towards a variety of different animals. aside from all the fun Noah listened carefully to when we shouldn't touch a dog and just leave it alone to also learning how to approach a strangers dog. Noah enjoyed the experience and was so involved by answering and asking the presenter lots of questions. After this experience the children were left an activity page and Noah was able to transfer what he had learnt from the experience onto the activity sheet.

10.01.2022 Ben from Crocodile Encounters paid Gowrie a visit and showed the children many different types of reptiles. First we met Speedy the Turtle . Ben told us how his shell was part of his body and was actually his skeleton on the outside. The children listened intently as they were told how turtles, when scared, will do three things: hide in their shell, urinate, or excrete a smelly liquid to stop other animals eating them. We next met Bob the blue tongue, who demonstrated his n...amesake for the children to many squeals of delight. Ben explained that the colour blue is a warning symbol in the natural world and can often mean poison, which helps stop other animals from eating them. Next came Princess, a beautiful bearded dragon. Princess showed everyone how she could change her scales to match her surroundings, helping her to blend in and avoid detection of predators. Two snakes followed Princess, a small and then huge diamond python, to the children’s delight. We discussed what we should do if we found a snake in the wild and how the best approach was to play musical statues. Finally we met Mr Crunch the five year old saltwater crocodile. He was only a meter in size but Ben told us how he could grow up to ten meters! He also told us why it wasn’t a good idea to put your finger in his mouth. The children all had a pat of each animal and discussed how they felt: soft, silky, rough and scaly. Thank you Ben for a wonderful experience!

06.01.2022 Spiny Leaf Insects Class Pets This week the Wamul room was very excited to see our new classroom pets the Spiny Leaf Insects!! We have two female and one male leaf insect. This week we have had a great time getting out one leaf insect at a time to observe, have a hold of and to vote on names for them. We also learnt a very important lesson when we got the male out and that is to make sure we are very careful and still keep him in a small enclosure as his wings are big enou...gh for him to fly short distances, our cheeky male got away from Donna and Joy and flew up onto the wall and next to the air conditioner which of course the children found hilarious!! We have started to learn more about how Spiny Leaf Insects live such as they only eat gum leaves and to drink water we need to spray their gum leaves with water using a spray bottle the Spiny Leaf Insects will then drink the water droplets that are on the gum leaves. We voted on names for our class pets over Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week and although we had some fantastic suggestions the names we have decided on are Rosie and Emma for the females and Macky McMacky for our male! Today while checking on the spiny leaf insects we were surprised to find that one of them had shed their skin, this is such an exciting discovery which prompted interesting discussions and learning. Be sure to take a look at our pets when you are next in the Wamul room, there will also be pictures up nearby to show what each insect is named so you can try and spot them. We look forward to learning more about our Spiny Leaf Insects throughout the year and sharing this with our families.

05.01.2022 There was a lot of excitement in the Wamul room as we went on an excursion to the Mudgee show. To get to the Mudgee show we jumped on a little bus which drove us to and from the show. On the way to the show we went past Mudgee Public School, a few of the children's older siblings attend school here and this began a discussion on big school. Once we arrived at the show we ventured into the main pavilion where all of the art works, lego, crochet, photographs, knitting, flowe...r, fruit and vegetables are displayed and judged. There was still judging in progress but we were lucky enough to see our art works that we created and submitted to the show. The Guguburra room created an Australian map with nuts, bolts, and washers covering all the states and pasta necklaces. Our room submitted a dripped paint marble wood collage that got second prize! We also submitted our black glue and water colour art work as well as our wattle collages. We spent some time exploring the other submissions to the show, the children really enjoyed looking at the crocheted dragon, dinosaur crepe paper collages, the flower displays, the Aboriginal hand print painting and the fruit, vegetables and eggs. Once we explored the pavilion entries we moved outside for some morning tea. After morning tea we were lucky enough to spend some time in the animal nursery. The owners of the animals were lovely and allowed us to get up close to a number of animals including a baby alpaca who had only weaned from his mother two days prior, a puppy, rabbit, a sphynx cat, goats and a duckling. There were so many animals for us to explore and engage with we had an amazing time. The excursion to the Mudgee Show was a great experience and further extends into some of the childrens interests in Farming.

01.01.2022 Custard the Goat over the past few weeks the children in the Wamul and Gugubarra room have enjoyed a weekly visit from a goat kid called Custard. Custard belongs to one of our educators and is being hand raised. When she visits the Centre the children assist with feeding custard and play with her in the playground, offering her small pieces of grass to nibble or playing games of tag.
