22.01.2022 While it is great to be on the other side of the lockdown in SA, we are not recommending face to face visits or sessions just yet and we are still not allowing visitors to our sites while we monitor the situation. Great work SA and thanks everyone for your part, especially the educators and leaders in our sector, we know how essential you are.

21.01.2022 Given the lockdown announcement we wanted to let you know that no nonessential people will be on site for the next 6 days. Our children's programs are open for the children of essential workers only and communication will be coming out to families shortly. Please contact your Children's Program if necessary: Thebarton: 83525144 Underdale: 83525144... We will still be available by phone for all programs as needed. All professional learning sessions will continue but will use the Zoom platform. Thank you everyone for your patience.

17.01.2022 Thank you City of Port Adelaide Enfield for inviting us to the launch of the new resource 'Aboriginal People and Culture Handbook' and their new postcard. This is an invaluable resource and we look forward to sharing it with others through our networks and professional learning program.

15.01.2022 The Gowrie SA Professional Learning Team would like to thank and acknowledge you for your ongoing commitment to professional learning and your resilience and tenacity through such a complex and stressful year. We feel very fortunate to be able to work with such a passionate and committed group of professionals. We were shown again how resilient and adaptable this sector is and the ability we have to put children first in our decision making. We would also like to thank all of... you who have booked sessions, had us in your services, been flexible about the adaptations we have had to make and spoken to us about what you want for your team. We would also like to acknowledge the services that have come to us as an Innovative Services provider. We now have four cases in different stages of implementation and several more that are either being created together or awaiting approval. This opportunity to work with a service to address barriers over time is so exciting for us as we head into 2021. We hope that you have the opportunity for a break in December/January and take some time to appreciate the work you have put in to this year to keep things safe and predictable for everyone. We look forward to 2021, may it be safe and a fresh start for us all. Our office will be closed from 23rd December 5th January 2021 (reopening Wednesday 6th January)

12.01.2022 Congratulations to the team and community of Gabmididi Manoo Children and Family Centre on the fabulous events they organised for NAIDOC week. This was made possible in part by some funding Gowrie SA offered to two services as part of our Reconciliation commitment. Thank you for sharing about your events. #NAIDOC2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe

12.01.2022 Is your service philosophy in need of review? How do you engage children, families and the wider community?

08.01.2022 Following our last post, here are some more ways Gowrie SA have been celebrating NAIDOC week. The children have been exploring the NAIDOC week 'Shape of Land' artwork by Noongar and Saibai Islander man Tyrown Waigana. This led to further exploration of the significance of symbols and the Rainbow Serpent. The educators and children have designed and started mosaicking a Rainbow Serpent for our Kindergarten garden.

07.01.2022 Thanks Adelaide Botanic Gardens for this insight!

07.01.2022 This week across Gowrie SA we have been celebrating NAIDOC week in various ways and we will share this over several posts. The educators have created an interactive timeline using 50 metres of rope to represent 50,000 years of history. (We need a longer rope!) This timeline had significant events and made tangible the length of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories by having 1mm equal to 1 year of history. This made very visible to children the tiny fraction of time their presence on Kaurna country is to date when compared to the thousands of years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.

05.01.2022 A great resource around the success that educators have had at Gowrie SA Thebarton through Benefit-Risk Assessments with their children. "Our value for natural ...environments exposes children to risks involved in the natural world. As we observe children’s learning we pose questions to them to provoke and challenge their thinking and understanding of the risks they are confronted with or may face. This supports the development of children’s ability to identify potential risks, hazards and benefits associated with their explorations, and make informed decisions taking these factors into consideration." - Kate Stone & Christina Lipitkas https://natureplayqld.org.au//benefit-risk-assessments-wit

03.01.2022 National Reconciliation in Education Awards: Entries open now! Reconciliation Australia is proud to launch the third Narragunnawali Awards recognising exceptional commitment to reconciliation in education. The Narragunnawali Awards are Australia’s first and only national reconciliation in education awards for schools and early learning services.... Cash prizes of $10,000 as well as media and promotional opportunities are on offer to the winning school and early learning service that displays exceptional commitment to reconciliation. Reconciliation Australia CEO, Karen Mundine said the recently released 2021 State of Reconciliation in Australia Report consistently asserts the role of education as a driving force in the reconciliation movement. Education is critical to how we understand and think about the world and about reconciliation; the earlier we have these conversations the better, said Ms Mundine. These awards will showcase the huge amount of substantive work occurring in schools and early learning services, not only through teaching about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in the classroom, but also through building relationships across education settings and their local communities. To learn more about the Awards and to apply visit https://www.narragunnawali.org.au/awards

02.01.2022 The Kindergarten children have been engaged in learning about the Uluru Statement by reading 'Finding our Heart' by Thomas Mayor and learning how they can be advocates for change. The children have written to Minister Sussan Ley about their concerns over the future of the Birthing Tree of the Djab Wurrung people. They are eagerly awaiting a reply from Sussan Ley MP #UluruStatement #VoiceTreatyTruth
