22.01.2022 RYAN Schmiedel has a problem. The 21-year-old referee is the NRL’s Referee Development Officer but he has just a small number of referees to develop! We’ve got... five referees qualified to control first grade games, he said of the fast-approaching Wests Entertainment Group Group 4 season. We’ve got James Brown, Corey Dixon, Christian Petherbridge and Stephen Pleffer (plus himself). We have eight senior referees altogether at the moment. It means there will be a fair bit of doubling up for those eight referees this season. They could do two games on a Saturday and a Sunday as well as a few lines. They are paid well for their efforts. First grade games are worth $150, second grade $100, Under 18’s $70 and ladies league tag $50. To do a first grade line is worth $70, a reserve grade line $50, an Under 18 line $30 and a ladies league tag line $20. The NSWRL does have a system whereby club volunteers can do a quick course and be accredited to run a line. The Werris Creek club is looking at paying the registration for anyone who is interested in doing that, Ryan said. That’s a good development from them. That there is a shortage of referees isn’t a recent decline, it’s been a yearly problem for the past five years. And it isn’t something that can be fixed overnight. It takes a couple of years to get referees up to a level to control Under 18’s and reserve grade, Ryan said. He is looking for interested former players who might want to start the refereeing process. We have been pushing for former players, he said. We had a course (refereeing) a few weeks ago and had three kids come along. Pic: Ryan Schmiedel is hoping to find and develop referees.

19.01.2022 OPEN PRIMARY LEGENDS GALA DAY - TAMWORTH Last Thursday, we were at Jack Wollaston Oval, Tamworth with schools from the Tamworth region taking the field in our N...RL Legends Gala Day. We had well over 100 local students come and play both tackle and league tag! It was great to see smiles on so many faces and to have footy back in the North West for our schools after many events being cancelled during the year. A massive thanks goes out to the schools who participated on the day in what has been a tough year for all. We value your support in having your school be a part of the day. Congratulations to those students who won their schools respective coaches awards on the day. Westdale have presented their awards at their schools next school assembly. Participating Schools: Tamworth Public School Tamworth South Public School Westdale Public School Nemingha Public School A massive thank you also goes out to NRL Referee Development Officer, Ryan Schmiedel, and the Group 4 Referees Association for assisting with officiating on the day.
