22.01.2022 The benefits of sub-specialising as a GP One day a week, Dr Krystyna de Lange works at a tertiary hospital in a sub-specialised gynaecology clinic. The clinic is designed to help reduce the public waitlist numbers; many patients wait a long time to see a specialist for conditions that can be managed by a GP with extra trainingGPs such as Krystyna. From the beginning, I really enjoyed doing obstetrics and gynaecology. The problem was that I didn’t want to just do that.... I also found that I enjoyed the things that the specialists didn’t necessarily get to do, such as contraception and menopause. Read more https://gpra.org.au/magazine/dr-krystyna-de-lange/

22.01.2022 #NAIDOCWeek2020 is an opportunity to come together in honouring the history, achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Join GPRA and Indigenous General Practice Registrars Network (IGPRN) to celebrate. GP trainees often move frequently during the course of their training to gain a wide variety of experience. To get involved with this year's NAIDOC theme (#AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe), think about researching the Traditional Owners of the lands on whi...ch you live and work, and integrating a Welcome or Acknowledgement of Country at formal meetings and events. IGPRN have put together this page, with helpful resources, for all GP trainees. https://gpra.org.au/latest/naidoc-week/

21.01.2022 GPRA President Dr Sama Balasubramanian discusses the transition to College-led GP training. "GP trainees are the future of general practice, and it is critical that their needs and views are duly considered as they affect not only the destiny of primary healthcare in Australia, but the needs of patients as well." https://gpra.org.au/latest/president-update-october2020/

21.01.2022 GPRA is aware of 70 exam candidates in WA who will potentially be unable to sit the upcoming 5 February KFP exam due to the current lockdowns. The RACGP has informed these affected candidates that they will not be able to sit the KFP exam until the July 2021.2 exam cycle, but they can sit the 2021.1 Remote Clinical Exam (RCE) in July, provided they have passed the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT). However, if the lockdown continues beyond this Friday, these candidates will also m...iss the opportunity to sit the AKT exam on 6 February. The RACGP has not addressed this potential eventuality. The RACGP’s communication to affected candidates has, so far, been tardy and inadequate. It is unacceptable for candidates to first hear about possible exam cancellations by word-of-mouth and through social media. This has not gone down at all well with this cohort of trainees who are already dissatisfied with their College due to its handling of the cancelled AKT and KFP exams in 2020. The RACGP must immediately work on restoring trust and confidence," says GPRA President Dr Antony Bolton. Read the full story https://gpra.org.au/latest/racgp-wa-exams/

21.01.2022 Most Australians enjoy one of the highest life expectancies of any country in the worldbut this is not true for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. According to Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can expect to live at least 10 years fewer than other Australians and experience higher rates of preventable illnesses such as heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes; babies born to Aboriginal mothers d...ie at more than twice the rate of other babies born in Australia. GPRA and IGPRN believe that every Australian has a right to be safe, to belong, and to share equally in our world-class health outcomeswhich is why we affirm our support for the Close the Gap campaign. 16.01.2022 New data highlights continuing dissatisfaction with GP training and employment with a worrying gap between what GP trainees’ rate as important in their training and employment arrangements, and what they are able to receive. There are significant gaps between what GP trainees’ rate as important and their satisfaction with those aspects. Just over half of respondents report not being satisfied with their salary, just under forty per cent were not satisfied with their ability ...to negotiate on salary, and just under half were not satisfied with their ability to negotiate on other employment terms and conditions, said GPRA President Dr Antony Bolton. This is also driving trainees to take on additional employment outside of training to make ends meet. The report showed that nearly one third (31.0 per cent) of respondents, who were full-time GP trainees, were doing additional work and for the majority (62.5 per cent) needing additional income was the reason. Of particular concern is that the highest proportion of respondents undertaking additional work was those in their first term of GP training. https://gpra.org.au//dissatisfaction-employment-training-/

12.01.2022 The RACGP needs to commit to publishing the outcome before the investigation begins so that registrars and those who support them could have confidence in the review process. "It is a positive step that the RACGP has already completed its own internal review so that it can act quickly to make improvements and to avoid similar disastrous outcomes in its subsequent exams." "The RACGP should provide this internal review to trainees and members of the College, and it would certa...inly help restore confidence and trust amongst trainees if they explain what improvements are being made as a result of the findings of this review." "The independent external review is also an important and necessary step. GPRA stands by our previous call for the College to make the report and findings from this PricewaterhouseCoopers review publicly available." https://www.ausdoc.com.au//racgp-refuses-release-review-la

10.01.2022 GPRA calls on the RACGP to extend leniency to enable the affected exam candidates to undertake the clinical exam without the usual prerequisite pass in the written exam. Additionally, the RACGP must commit to an investigation which is open, independent, and informed by the trainee experience. More must be done to restore the trust of GP trainees in the RACGP. 09.01.2022 A small, 70 kilometre stretch of water between Palm Island and Townsville represents a huge gap in healthcare outcomes for the Island’s 2,500 residentsmany of whom are Indigenous Australians. It was this oceanic gap which drew Dr Shaun Hosein to the locality of islandscollectively known as Palm Islandto do something different during his GP training. One of the things I wanted to learn to do was to work in a remote community with no resources...and I wanted to get experien...ce in working with First Nation peoples, Shaun says. Shaun recommends that those considering a remote placement first have a good base in their training to draw uponextra skills in areas such as emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics are especially valuable in remote areas such as Palm Island. We only had X-raywe didn’t have any CT scanners. You learn to rely on your clinical skills and judgements more so than using scanning. Read more gpra.org.au/magazine/dr-shaun-hosein/
