18.01.2022 What Salary Should I Ask For? Throughout recent interviews I have noticed a trending topic regarding wages. "What is the market rate for a Legal Secretary?" "I have 3 years post admission experience in a small firm, should I ask for a higher salary in a mid or top tier interview?" Determining your worth or salary expectations is not always based on the market rate. It is usually determined by measuring your years of experience in the relevant area of law, your previous le...Continue reading

18.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL RECRUITMENT UPDATE JULY 2013 What options are open to Lawyers currently looking at exploring International Opportunities in the current market, with the recent introduction of various International firms into the local legal landscape and the volatile global economy? HEADING ABROAD?... Ideally you will have gained at least 4 years post qualification experience from a highly regarded firm. Realistically, opportunities to secure a role internationally will require you to have worked in a local top tier firm. WHERE TO? LONDON London historically has been the logical and most highly sought after location for Australian and New Zealand Lawyers seeking to explore opportunities. The word to best describe the market post GFC is challenging with firms favouring local candidates and showing a reluctance to sponsor. Gone are the days when these lawyers would have had most of the magic circle fighting for them to join them. You will need to show strong perseverance and patience with the process as it does take considerable time to get things moving. Saying that there is still demand for high quality lawyers, particularly at the 4 to 6 year mark in Construction, Project & Asset Finance and Energy & Resources. UAE The market after several lean years post GFC has shown some more positive signs recently. We have seen instructions increasing steadily where clients are open to looking at Commonwealth qualified lawyers looking to make a move. Top Tier experience is required to secure roles with areas such as Energy, Corporate and Construction being the most buoyant. ASIA The Asian market has been the obvious choice for lawyers looking for international opportunities recently. Opportunities have however diminished as global M&A slowed with language requirements becoming essential rather than a preference, particularly in Beijing and Shanghai. For more tailored advice please contact our International Consultant, Nicole Garrett on +61 2 9220 4400 for a confidential discussion.

13.01.2022 Working Overseas: The How-To Guide The world is getting smaller, and many people are now able to realize their dreams of moving overseas to try their luck at the Working Holiday gap year. I get the pleasure of meeting fresh-faced internationals every day, each one bright-eyed and eager to show their worth in Corporate Australia. But not every one arrives fully prepared. Here are my Top Five tips to keep in mind if you are planning to job-hunt overseas:... Before you arrive: 1.Get your paperwork in order!Make sure you have at hand two written references from previous employers, and note down their up-to-date contact details. Confirm that they are comfortable receiving a phone call or email from overseas for a more detailed reference, and give them a heads-up whenever this seems likely. It also never hurts to make copies to have at hand of your Visa confirmation email, if it is electronic. Either way, bring your passport to interviews as proof of your right to work. 2.Pack a suit.Yes, pack your thongs, sunnies, and blue jeans but include a token interview outfit, or buy one on your first day on the ground. The last thing you want is to be asked to interview sooner than you thought and botch that important first impression. 3.Make friends on the ground.A month before you even get on a plane, register with a reputable agency and give them a clear timeline of your arrival date. Ideally, youll have a friend who can recommend a good company. My best and brightest contractors have often been introduced to me by current or past temps. Not only does this increase the chances of getting work immediately, it also means the referees get a juicy referral bonus from our agency as a thank-you! Before you leave: 4.Compile evidence of your good work! Ask for written references from the people to whom you have reported, and make sure you dont leave without them in hand. If you are on linkedin, connect with your co-workers and contacts. Make sure your resume is up-to-date with the companies in which you worked, jobs you did and skills you acquired.Just because you have been on holiday, doesnt mean you cant utilize the work that you have done to boost your career back home. 5.Dont leave any loose change. And by that I mean your tax return. Its your hard-earned money so dont throw it away!Make sure you ask your employer and/or agency to supply you with your group certificate, and meet with an accountant so that they can file your paperwork in due course. Are you moving to the UK from Australia, or moving to Australia from overseas for a Working Holiday? Contact me for further information and advise.

11.01.2022 Recruitment Is a Dirty Word Whilst sitting on a 6am domestic flight from Tasmania to Sydney yesterday morning, heading back to work after a funeral, I was typing on my laptop, suited and booted, when a handsome man sat next to me, also suited and booted. Already working I see? ... I replied, Yes. He then noticed my clients pen (a law firm) and asked if I was a lawyer. I replied; No, I am a legal service provider. He then assumed I worked for a document management company of some kind and I corrected him by explaining how I locate talent for the firm. His response stunned me; "Oh, youre just a recruiter. And he put his headphones back in and shut his eyes. JUST A RECRUITER! I know who he was referring to. The recruiters who send out your resume without much care or deliberation, recruiters who are in it for the money and only have their clients best wishes at hand. So let me explain to you why a legal consultant at GR Law is different. Apart from being wildly good looking, we care. Let GR Law expel your recruitment myths; Recruitment agencies flick your CV all over town in the hope it sticks somewhere. Not all recruitment agencies operate this way, trouble is, the ones that do tarnish the reputation of those that dont. A good recruitment agent will call their client first, brief them on your experience and have them so excited about your application that they book you in for interview before theyve seen your resume! A good recruiter will make sure the job details and your job requirements closely match each other. Theres no point in placing you into a role where we will need to replace you in a few months time They say theyll call back, but they never do! This one is one of the most frequent candidate complaints, but its really easy to remedy: respond to every applicant, however underqualified they may be for the job. Its not hard to do and it only takes us a few moments to let you know youve been unsuccessful. Recruiters take a big fat commission cheque for just a bit of admin work. For anyone who has ever had to recruit, this is pretty laughable but a lot of people genuinely believe thats all there is to recruitment. A good recruiter is transparent about their processes. Even if weve got nothing to report, we make regular contact to explain how far along you are with your job applications. They dont know anything about the jobs theyre recruiting for. A specialist recruiter will immerse themselves in their area of specialisation and will be up to date with the latest changes in legislation, partner moves, firm merges etc. Check out your recruiter on Linkedin to see how long theyve worked in their industry of specialisation. They may also have client and candidate recommendations to support their credibility. If you have any other questions or need any guidance, contact one of the friendly consultants at GR Law.
