21.01.2022 John Newton and Amazing Grace TODAY - March 21 marks the 273rd anniversary of what John Newton called his 'Great Deliverance'. On the importance of that date, Newton wrote, "March 21 is a day to be remembered by me. I have never suffered it to pass wholly unnoticed since the year 1748. On that day the Lord sent from on high and delivered me out of deep waters." His "Great Deliverance" took place while sailing back to England from Africa. He and the crew of the Greyhound"- a... cargo ship were caught in a violent storm. Battered by monstrous winds and beaten by mountainous waves, the tired sailors, like their torn sails, were helpless as they battled against the raging seas, trying desperately to save their badly leaking boat and the rapidly sinking vessel. For the young seaman, however, the day of salvation was here; the hour of decision had arrived; the moment of truth was at hand. In the midst of the chaos and the confusion, the frenzy and the fear, Newton called on the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity and truth, crying out in genuine repentance for the Redeemer's tender mercies. And God saved him. The life of John Newton, wretched sinner that he was, clearly demonstrates that no matter how deep in sin you have gone so far, God’s grace is still so far greater. That’s right, God’s Amazing Grace is all sufficient regardless of whosoever you are in this world and whatsoever you’ve done with your life. You can read the full inspiring story of John Newton in my book "The Man & the Story Behind Amazing Grace" - an 84 page/10 chapters of facts, figures and an easy to follow historical account of the soul of John Newton and the story of his 'Amazing Grace' - Reduced to just $7 (incl. posted in Australia only)...Order your copy/ies today... 15.01.2022 Y Adversity Pt 5 The Bible says: In the day of adversity consider. (Ecclesiastes 7:14a) In our GraceThrough devotions this month, we said that to get over any serious crisis, whether the Covid 19 pandemic or the floods that we’re currently experiencing in Sydney, Australia, we all need to check our attitude, approach and action plan and make sure that it is one of Respond with Hope to Facts in a Selfless manner, rather than React with Hype to Fiction in a Selfish way...Continue reading
14.01.2022 How to Make 2021 the Happiest New Year Ever! The Bible says: Thou crownest the year with Thy goodness; (Psalm 65:11) 1. RETHINK the old theory of what the wo...rld calls a "New Year Resolution" - a worn-out concept built mostly on a faulty foundation of having to, once again, "prove your personhood and improve your imperfection" and based mainly on "fear and failure", and REVISE it with a fresh revelation of "the grace, mercy and peace of God", available so freely and abundantly to all of His children, all year round, so that instead of finding fault with and fixing your old self, you focus on and closely follow the Ancient of Days; www.GraceThrough.com.au
12.01.2022 Wednesday, February 3rd, A.D. 2021, marks the 233rd anniversary of the first Christian service in Australia. It was Sunday, February 3rd, 1788, at 10 a.m. a wee...k after his safe arrival with his wife at Sydney Cove, Rev. Richard Johnson conducted the first Christian service on Australian soil. The service was held in the open air under a great tree at the corner of Bligh and Hunter Streets, Sydney. ( See Pic Below) His text was based on Psalm 116:12 -13 What shall I render unto the LORD for all His benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the LORD. ( See Pic Below) Rev. Johnson went on not only to become the FIRST clergyman in the colony, but he also built the FIRST Church and the FIRST school in Australia. ( See Pic Below) He was also the FIRST to provide care for orphans and Aboriginal children. Another interesting fact about today’s anniversary, that many may not be aware of , is the connection with the grand old hymn, Amazing Grace. You see, it was Rev. John Newton, the author of ‘Amazing Grace’, in his capacity as leader of the Eclectic Society - an evangelical group, who first approached Rev. Richard Johnson about 16 months earlier, on September 23, 1786, with a visionary proposal to be the chaplain and missionary on the First Fleet to the land Down Under. Newton was crystal clear about the cost involved to embark on such a grand journey, and the call required to undertake such a glorious mission. Rev. Johnson accepted Newton’s proposal, and the rest is Australian history. On May 13th ,1787, the First Fleet sailed from Portsmouth in England with over 1400 souls on board. After a harrowing, hazardous and a horrendous eight months journey, the eleven vessels expedition led by Captain Arthur Phillip finally reached the shores of Botany Bay in New South Wales within a few days of each other. Then on Saturday 26th January, Captain Philip - the first Governor of New South Wales conducted a small flag raising ceremony at Sydney Cove. A week later, on February 3rd, Rev. Johnson held the first Christian service. On special remembrance days like today, you cannot help but pause and reflect on how BLESSED you really are, because of what Jesus, your Saviour and Shepperd, did for you, in you, and through you (and will continue to do). Like Johnson, you give thanks to God with a GRATEFUL heart for his amazing grace and peace and for his awesome goodness and mercy towards YOU. How He equipped and empowered you for life and ministry . How He loved you and led you throughout the ups and downs of life.... How He provided for you and protected you all these years.... How He kept you safe and sound in His caring hand..... And like the psalmist you say to yourself, what DO you render unto the LORD: 1. Who forgives all your sins, 2. Who heals all your diseases; 3. Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption, 4. Who beautifies, dignifies and crowns you lavishly with loving-kindness and tender mercy; 5. Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the soaring eagle.’ (Psalm 103: 3-5) What CAN you render unto the LORD who: 6. executes righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7. is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in compassion and lovingkindness. 8. will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever. 9. has not dealt with us according to our sins as we deserve, nor rewarded us with punishment according to our wickedness. (Psalm 103: 7-10) As we get our head and heart around some of the 9 blessings and benefits mentioned above ,there are at least 9 ways to respond , according to the Scriptures, that we , every Born Again Christian, not only CAN do and MUST do, but by the grace of God, in His strength, and to His glory, WILL do: 1. I will SAY of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. (Psalm 91:2) 2. I will SING unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me. (Psalm 13:6). I will SING of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 89:1) 3. I will SHOUT unto God with the voice of triumph.(Psalm 47:1) 4. I will SHOW forth his salvation from day to day . (Psalm 96:2) 5. I will SEEK thee, rejoice and be glad in thee: ( Psalm 40: 16) 6. I will STUDY ...rightly dividing the word of truth( 2Timothy 2:15) 7. I will SERVE the LORD with gladness; and come before His presence with singing! (Psalm 100:2) 8. I will SPEAK of his testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed (Psalm 119:46), and, 9. I will STAND fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made me free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1) Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. ( Ephesians 3:20-21) www.GraceThrough.com.au #PeterRahmeDevotions #RichardJohnson
