23.01.2022 A u t u m n s e n s o r y p l a y I d e a h o w - t o: I LOVE introducing families and their littles to the joys of sensory play! Here’s an activity we did in class that is so easy to set up at home - pop some rainbow rice in a tub (I used autumn coloured rice) with some autumn leaves (another great activity to do with your kids, go on a leaf hunt!) and offer them a variety of tools you have in your kitchen for some exploratory play - measuring cups, spoons, whisk, small ...bowls, egg cups are all wonderful loose part tools that will easily and effectively elevate play WHY DO THIS? As a teacher I always encourage families not to underestimate the effectiveness of an activity as simple as this - paired with time for intentional, free, uninterrupted play, children have a chance to build on the amazing neural pathways that they form through sensory play! Don’t forget that when children explore new materials, they are able to build what I call their sensory vocabulary - experience with a variety of materials which helps them interpret the world around them. As a teacher I have observed a significant rise in the levels of anxiety our children have been experiencing this year, particularly with the upcoming transition to school in the new year. ... In looking at ways to support our children, I have found that incorporating sensory play has been one of the most gentle/effective techniques to help address the big emotions that we are seeing in the children. Introducing sensory play can be as simple as sitting with your child and kneading some playdough together. I’m so doing, a bridge is built between our world and theirs and an invitation to open up about things that are bothering them is soon presented. Having something to occupy their hands and mind can also provide a moment to slow down, relax and re-set. 20.01.2022 I T ‘ S M O V I N G D A Y Sorry everyone, I might be a bit MIA this weekend because we are moving today! After 2 very wonderful, happy years of living in our first apartment together we are moving on into a new space to make room for new adventures This means...(no we are not pregnant, though we are still working towards a baby ) I get to have a studio space to run sensory play workshops in! ... 12.01.2022 Rainy, grey days like today put me in such a dreamy mood who else is making the most of this cooler weather with snuggly jumpers and copious amounts of tea? : Playdough and loose parts like dried flowers can be a great calming and creative activity to offer your littles if they are running a little wild indoors because it’s too rainy to go outside Play education tip: playdough is a great way to bring calm to busy bodies because of the sensory input it provides and the muscle work that is required to manipulate it (try having your littles squeeze with hands and stomp on with feet!) Adding various loose parts such as shells, pebbles and twigs can also provide extra creative stimulation for imagination building

Painting on them is a really fun sensory play experience for children of all ages and popping the bubbles is also a great fine motor strength building exercise (preparation for later skills like holding utensils at mealtimes and drawing/writing)! 01.01.2022 A F F I R M A T I O N S Just some thoughts following on from my last post about children feeling heightened levels of anxiety this year - do you practise any affirmations with your children? In my classroom I have found that introducing a simple affirmation that we speak out loud during morning circle really helps to set a positive tone for the day as each child is encouraged to respect, love and care for themselves, their friends and our shared environment (that means our... toys, resources and nature too). In the simple affirmation we recite, we remind ourselves first of our worth and value as unique individuals. When the children start the day feeling good in themselves, it helps to alleviate anxious, negative trending thoughts about themselves and positively influences the way they respond to each experience in their day while we still have ups and downs and each day is not always sunny and perfect, building resilience and mental fortitude takes time and effort! The good news is, you can begin investing in your children and helping them to invest in themselves T O D A Y on a separate note, I would like to introduce some sensory play/art/values building workshops in the new year, would anyone be interested to join? I am working on setting up a small studio space in my home in Sydney but am also considering running some online workshops so friends everywhere can join in what do you think?
