25.01.2022 Hi Everyone. Don’t forget tonight’s Q&A sessions. Combatives Q&A 6pm - 7pm. Open to all Combatives, Master Cycle and Black Belt Club kids. Master Cycle ~ Foot Lock Q&A. 7pm-8pm... Wednesday night saw a good turnout. In Combatives we covered some fundamentals of the mount and also dove deeper into the 1 percenters. I think everyone from beginner Combatives to advanced Master Cycle students all learnt a lot. The Master Cycle foot lock session also dove deep into the fundamentals and a heap of knowledge gained. See you there tonight. Don’t forget to register and bring your mask.

24.01.2022 On behalf of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Shepparton I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year and take this opportunity to thank all the students and families that supported us through this challenging year that we have all faced together. Without your support the club would simply not exist. I would also like to thank everyone in the leadership group that has helped with cleaning, organizing and just simply being there. I’m looking forward to 2021 with renewed vigor and would lik...e to help all those who wish to take their Jiujitsu to the next level. Happy new year everyone Scott

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Liam on his 1st Stripe White Belt. Liam is itching to get into full contact classes. Well done. Liam Budge

22.01.2022 Make sure you get down to the last official Combatives class for 2020. Tonight we will be looking at the Class 17, Leg Hook Takedown and the reverse ude- garami. Sound familiar? It was the technique used by Masahiko Kimura to defeat Hélio Gracie in Rio de Janeiro on October 23, 1951. We’re looking forward to seeing you all before the break.

22.01.2022 This is one of the most common DMs I get, and it always hurts. It’s amazing how the martial art that our grand masters designed to empower the weak against the ...strong is taught so poorly at BJJ schools around the world that it deters the very people that it was intended to serve. If this has happened to you, don’t give up, there is hope. If you order your favorite pizza, and it shows up folded and crumbled in the box, you don’t blame the pizza, you blame the delivery man who dropped it. Similarly, if you commit yourself to learning jiu-jitsu, and it ends up being one of the worst experiences of your life, jiu-jitsu is not to blame, rather, the instructor - who had no clue how to introduce you to this amazing martial art in a safe, structured and encouraging manner - is at fault. Jiu-jitsu IS for everyone and anyone who tells you otherwise is misinformed or they simply never learned how to teach (or both), in either case, they don’t deserve you as a student. If you are one of the countless people who have ever tried BJJ at a random school and quit for any of the reasons listed above, DM me your story and your location and I’m gonna help you get back on the path, so you can learn the are that was entirely designed for YOU! _ p.s. If you are a BJJ instructor of school owner who has no clue why your students are quitting as quickly as they show up, and why your school is stuck at 127 students even though you’ve been open for 22 years, DM me as well. We need to talk. See more

21.01.2022 Congratulations to these junior champs receiving their stripes and also to Mark on his 1st and Nick on to his 2nd. Great work

20.01.2022 The Four Kings of Cuba In December 1908, Mitsuyo Maeda after spending time in the United States parted ways with his long time sensi Tsunejiro Tomita and went t...o Havana, Cuba. During his first trip he not only fought in many challenge mixed style and Catch wrestling matches but also set up the countries first Judo/Ju-Jitsu dojos and taught on the island. In July 1909, Maeda went to Mexico City, where he once again teamed up with fellow Kodokan 2nd generation Shodan, Soshihiro Satake (who had initially travelled to the United States with Maeda and Tomita). In Mexico Maeda partook in a Catch Wrestling tournament of which he drew with Swedish wrestler and strongman Hjalmar Lundin in the semifinals. But there was much political unrest in Mexico, so the two Judoka returned to Cuba in July 1910. In August Maeda drew with Catch Wrestler Jack Connell in a mixed style grappling bout in Havanna. Soon after Maeda issued challenges to Americans Catch Wrestling world champion Frank Gotch, and Boxing world heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. However the two worthy opponents ignored his challenge, as there was not much money to be made in such a match, and much to loss if they lost. Meanwhile, Maeda told two other Shodan Judoka who were also in the US around the same time as Maeda and Satake about the money he was making in Cuba, and invited them to join the Judoka duo. This in turn led to the arrival of Akitaro Ono in 1911 and Tokugoro Ito in 1912. Together, the four Japanese Kodokan Shodans (black belts) were billed as 'The Four Kings of Cuba'. The Four Kings were very popular in Cuba where they remained undefeated, the Japanese were proud of the reputation they were bringing to Judo/Ju-Jitsu and Japan. Consequently, in 1912, the Kodokan promoted Mitsuyo Maeda to 5th dan Shodan (black belt). There was some resistance to this decision because Jigoro Kano and the Kodokan did not approve of his involvement in professional wrestling and prize fighting. During 1913 and 1914, the Four Kings traveled throughout Central and South America. In El Salvador, the president watched them perform a Judo/Ju-Jitsu demonstration and then hired Maeda to teach the army for two months. Soon after, the Salvadoran president was assassinated, so the Four Kings left the country when tensions were high and foreigners were looked at with suspicion. The Four Kings also spent time in Panama, where they participated in challenge matches in the Canal Zone. During 1915, the Four Kings travelled to and took challenge matches in Brazil, and then in 1916, they separated. Maeda travelled to Britain, Satake went to Mexico, while Ono and Ito traveled back to the USA. Both Maeda and Satake would go on to later settle in Brazil where they opened the countries first Judo/Ju-Jitsu dojos and became fundamental in the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With Mitsuyo Maeda having taught Carlos Gracie, Donata Pires dos Reis, and Jacyntho Samphaio Ferro, while Soshihiro Satake taught Luiz Franca. In February 1918, 'The Los Angeles Times' interviewed Tokugoro Ito and published an article on the Judoka professional wrestler that featured some of his recollections of this portion of the South American trip. Because Satake had joined the Kodokan first, he was arguably the senior, followed by Maeda, Ono, and Ito. From the standpoint of rank, Maeda was technically the senior, and the most accomplished fighter of the four Shodans. Ito, told the Los Angeles Times that he was the strongest Judoka of the quartet, likely to promote himself for his professional wrestling career. The following is from the 'The Los Angeles Times' article. ~He (Ito) laid out every man who took a chance. The champion of Panama, a little smaller than a house and weighing 195 pounds, challenged him to a rough-and-tumble. That's where the judo star shines. The champion didn't wait to be knocked out but quit after the second round. Had enough. At an American mining camp in Peru, 14,000 feet up on the Andes, that country's two best wrestlers were taken on simultaneously by Ito. They were heavyweights and somebody had to catch them to prevent falling clear off the range. Time, fifty-seven seconds. There were many similar contests. (Photo of 'The Four Kings' taken Cuba 1912. From left to right Akitaro Ono, Tokugoro Ito, Soshihiro Satake and Mitsuyo Maeda) (And The Four Kings wearing their kimonos)
