08.01.2022 Premier Steven Marshall’s argument for scrapping Superloop 500 needs to be backed up by the real numbers. First figures claimed, although attendance numbers were down, the event generated $38.5 Million dollars at a cost to the taxpayer of somewhere north of $10m. Appears like a pretty fair return on investment to me. Today on 5AA he claimed costs were around $35 million - that’s a long way north of $10 million. So what is the actual figure?... As a result of the ending of the race 90,000 nights of accomodation bed nights have been lost at a time when the hospitality industry is haemorrhaging badly . The premier claims Ian Horne ,from the Australian Hotels Association who is on the South Australian Tourism Commission Board, agreed to the decision. Mr. Horne will have quite a time trying to convince the hotel industry he is acting in their best interests. The premier says it’s falling interest and lower profits, added to the cloud of Covid that spelt the end of the V8’s. Playing the Covid card is a bit strange considering Chief Health Officer NIcola Spurrier says she was never consulted about health issues surrounding the Superloop 500. The premier says that is the end of the the Adelaide 500, there’ll be no turning back. Yet events like the Tour Down Under have been scaled down because of Covid 19. Womad faces a similar cutback but no suggestion from the premier that it will be gone for good. What about the Fringe? No more Garden of Unearthly Delights going by the Premiers edict on large crowds. I’m not a great motor racing enthusiast but to see what the event does for our state, generating crowds of more than 200,000 even in a bad year, thousands of interstate visitors spending their money here and giving the local fans an event to be proud of makes me think we should at least scale back the event or delay it until the pandemic is no longer an issue. The Opposition has seized the moment with the Opposition leader Peter Malinauskas flying out for talks with the Supercars organisers with the view of re-instating the event if Labor wins the next election. However, it might be too late, The Supercar street race might end up in Melbourne like our Grand Prix did all those years ago.

01.01.2022 Christmas for Kids at the Lake. Rotary has given me some answers to your questions. Are parents allowed to attend? Yes family groups are welcome and catered for on ground sheet groupings. Is it normal Carols with emphasis on kids? Yes, we are being cautious by changing the community singing to a stage musical program which will include Santa. How are numbers to be limited? Rotary Club West Lakes will Covid trace by asking all participants to give a contact phone number per gr...oup as they enter and abide by Covid safe rules for the event. They will receive a wrist band each (which are limited to control numbers to the event) + free drink or ice cream voucher for each child. See more
