19.01.2022 Fear! I was interviewed by Fiona Spence (Rapid Results Mindset Coach) this week. The subject was fear, and how firefighters face and fight what could be the overwhelming impacts of letting the 4 main fear factors get out of control. Facing those fears is one thing, overcoming them another. Fiona has some great techniques and tools to use. ... https://fionaspence.podbean.com//How_Firefighters_Fight_Fe

14.01.2022 The sad truth and a silver lining - Childers Tragedy. The sad truth was stated by the English author and philosopher Aldous Huxley when he said, "that men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history". My ongoing sadness is that we continue to fail to learn much in regard to ensuring the fire safety of ourselves and our communities. Today is the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of 15 young people by murder/arson in... the Palace backpackers hostel located in Childers, Queensland. The sadness is that in many if not most countries around the world the issue of overcrowding in lower cost accomodation and fire safety requirements in general are still not be actively implemented and overseen by regulators. The sliver lining is that, although this is still the case following on from the tragedy that occurred in Childers, better legislation, retrospectively acting legislation, was put into place in Queensland that in my view has definitely saved lives since. And due to the piggy-back affect of consequential legislation in other states and territories in Australia and even other countries around the world, has potentially impacted saving lives and minimising injuries in these locations also. Einstein said, " The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking". Our thinking needs to change for the better to continue to ensure ongoing fire safety in Queensland and everywhere else. See more

14.01.2022 When front line responders go to work each day they just never know whats around the corner. In Los Angeles yesterday what waited around the corner was an explosion and fire. Eleven firefighters caught fire and were badly burnt, all of them now in hospital, 3 critical, 2 on ventillators. Click on link below and then vide pic. https://lnkd.in/gru5dyZ

04.01.2022 This week finished a big week for Fire & Emergency Services..including front line medicos. First, potential parole for Robert Long, convicted arsonist & mass murderer (15 backpackers/Childers/2000). Lets hope if they do grant it he is absolutely cured, if not..... Second, St Florian’s day on the 4th of May-firefighters patron Saint who like firefighters, faced a lot of fear and was set on fire, he was also scourged, flayed, then set on fire and thrown into a river with a mile...stone around his neck. Third, I recently finalised a podcast (Mindsetmatters- available soon) on the 4 x fears we all face, physical, failure, loss of control & abandonment, and how they relate to all of us. Fourth, Friday was Emergency Services Memorial Day a poignant and pertinent day given recent disastrous Australian Bushfires including the deaths of firefighters. The ABC also presented on 'Australian Story' (ABC) the life/career of Shane Fitzsimmons (Commissioner of NSWRFS), great viewing including facing his own fears. Four Corners (ABC) also presented on the fears confronting front line medical services during Covid 19 and how each day it was like they were potentially going into a toxic cloud of gas (see video below). Finally, today, myself and fellow firefighters will farewell one of our colleagues via his 'online' funeral service. https://lnkd.in/gbX4s2D Cheers. GT
