25.01.2022 GRAFTON RIFLE CLUB NICK ABRAHALL SCORES A DOUBLE AT 700 YARDS The weather forecasters predicted inclement weather and this resulted in our numbers being somewhat depleted as laying in the rain can be unpleasant, however, these conditions can create a great learning experience as those competitors who have prepared are able to tolerate those conditions. It is, therefore, imperative that your gear bag has all the necessary equipment to handle whatever conditions arise. Create...Continue reading

23.01.2022 GRAFTON RIFLE CLUB JOHN STONE 50 GOLDEN YEARS Saturday 7 November 2020 saw our esteemed Life Member John Stone celebrate fifty years to the day since transferring from Casino Rifle Club to Grafton Rifle Club. For twenty eight of those years John served as Honorary Secretary, a position he took very seriously and even though he no longer participates in competition, every Friday John comes out to the range to cut the grass in readiness for Saturday’s competition.... As a token of thanks for his fifty years activity and service, and in recognition of his tireless efforts to make the Club what it is today, the Club presented John with an inscribed silver fob watch. Thank you John Stone!!! Last week’s all-day competition must have worn out our members as only a meagre turnout arrived to compete at the 900 yard mound. Yet another frontal fishtailing wind was evident but this did not stop ‘Mr Consistent’ Peter Brown, showing a clean pair of heels, scoring the only possible 50/50 in his first stage and following up with a 49 in his second visit to the firing point, to be two points clear of the field. ‘Hunter’ Class last week was the largest contingent of competitors, but this week only Jack Potter arrived to test his skills at 900 yards. He enjoyed the challenge and is looking forward to next week as we will be competing at 300 yards. In the ‘F’ Open discipline the ever consistent Tony McKenna scored 55/60 in his first visit to the mound, following up with another 55 in his second, giving him an aggregate of 110 with seven super centrals. 22.01.2022 Grafton Rifle Club Report Saturday 27th March, 500 yards. With the floodwater receded from the butts, and much mowing of the grass adjacent to the clubhouse and 500 mound (courtesy of Dave Lancaster) competitors were able to enjoy a good afternoon’s shooting. Conditions were benign, with bright sunlight and a light breeze. Shooters firing good shots were rewarded with good scores. Our Secretary, Dave Grundy took full advantage of the conditions to post a double double! Firin...g a 100-13 in target rifle, he followed up with the same score in Hunter class, to claim off rifle honours in both disciplines. A rapidly improving shooter, he may be the one to beat to win this year’s championship. Hunter class continued to offer strong competition. Peter Brown was looking a certainty to post the highest single stage score with 8 centres on the board when he put a shot on the wrong target, oops. Handicap honours in hunter class were taken by Nick Abrahall, who won’t enjoy a handicap much longer, shooting a possible 100-12. Next weeks competition will be from the 600yard mound. Some of our members will be attending the Inverell OPM,and we wish them good fortune. 16.01.2022 Grafton Rifle Club Report 10/4/21 Eight shooters negotiated a very sodden range to set up on the 700yd mound for this week’s shoot. 09.01.2022 Grafton rifle club 300-yard report This Saturday we had a huge turnout of 18 shooters taking part in the 300-yard shoot. We also had a few visitors from out of town and although the 300 yard range is not the best for your first attempt they seemed to enjoy the challenge. We even had a couple of afternoon regulars giving this morning stuff a go and once they got over the shock of the timing restraints and the lack of flash shooting aids they were accustomed to I think they a...ll enjoyed themselves and hopefully they’ll return again. 5 possibles were shot on the day with Mort shooting 2 and Abes taking care of the other 3. Top off rifle was Nick Abrahall shooting a nice 98(with 9), Greg Mills Thom was hot on his heels with a 95(with 9) and Andy Paull rounded out the trio with a 94(with 7). 09.01.2022 Grafton Rifle Club Report 13/3/21 Saturday saw the return of Peter Nielsen and Mitch Lovell, who both have had a break from shooting for a while and those who arrived early to the range were keen to get started as conditions appeared perfect for producing high scores. Then as the first shooters lay on the mound, as if right on que, the wind came from down range and continually flicked from right to left and back again for the rest of the afternoon. In Hunter Class Jack Potter... shot his first ever double possible scoring 50.2 in his first stage and 50.5 in the second stage. Single possibles were shot in hunter Class by Andrew Kattenhorn 50.5 and Peter Nielsen 50.4. Sue Bloomer shot the only possible in F Class scoring a 60.6 in her first stage. Dennis Hilton moved away from his normal discipline of target rifle this week to shoot F- Open. He is preparing his rifle and fine tuning his loads in readiness for an open prize meeting at Inverell in 3 weeks time. Dennis and three other Club members will be flying the flag for our club in this popular annual competition. We watch with interest as they prepare their equipment and look forward to hearing about results upon their return. Visitors and prospective members are most welcome to come out and try this demanding and exacting sport of Target Rifle shooting. We still have to abide by the Covid19 requirements. 05.01.2022 Grafton Rifle Club Report Saturday 24/4/21 The Grafton Rifle Club was saddened to hear the news of the passing of Wendy Black this week. Wendy’s husband John and son Robert were active members of the Grafton rifle club for some years and Wendy was a supportive sponsor of the club during that time. Our member’s would like to take this opportunity recognise Wendy’s contributions and pass on condolences to John and his family during this difficult time. This week’s competitio...n saw 14 shooters shoot from the 900yd mound. The flags gave shooters the impression conditions were benign but the mirage gave indications that something a little more sinister was going on down range. In conditions like this being observant and patient will pay off on the score card. In Target Rifle, Peter Brown continued on his winning streak shooting yet another double possible to take home the off rifle trophy. Stephen Small, returning after a short break went home with the Handicap trophy for the day. The ever improving Andrew Kattenhorn dominated F Class this week taking home both the off rifle and handicap trophies. Andrews scores have slowly been increasing and he will be one to watch, as he continues to familiarises himself with his new home range. In Hunter Class, club Captain Nick Abrahall continued to excel, shooting a double possible to win the off rifle trophy, while Jack Potter who is beginning to refine his skills in this division took home the handicap trophy. Next weekend some club members will be representing Grafton Rifle Club in prize shoots at both Spring Ridge and Muckadilla. We wish those members safe travels and good shooting and we look forward to reporting results on their return. 03.01.2022 Grafton rifle club 100-yard shoot Saturday 3rd October 2020. The 100-yard shoot is always popular with both the centrefire and rimfire shooter’s as they are both able to compete at the same time. It has also become a bit of a fun shoot with members being able to dig out a rifle they would not normally shoot at the range. This was evident with a varied collection of open sighted rifles, lever actions and the odd ex-military rifle popping up on the mound. Top off rifle was Dave... Grundy shooting a nice 95 with(11), second was magpie brown with a 94 with (6), and Mort came in third with a 94 with (4). 5 possibles were shot on the day with Peter Brown, Mort, Grundy, Peter Tyrie and Tim Gallagher all sharing one a piece. A Grade aggregate scores Liza Georgelin 95.8, Peter Brown 94.8, Nick Abrahall 90.4, Rob Durrington 79, Greg mills-Thom 95.2, Dave Grundy 98.2.
