25.01.2022 During the many years I have communicated with documentary film maker Sangita Iyer about the tragic situation for temple elephants, she has always impressed me ...with her endless dedication and commitment. To work for the interests of captive elephants is often not good for ones sleep - the brutality one experiences while witnessing or documenting how human beings treat them is often difficult to fathom. Having learned what ceremonial elephants go through Sangita made the documentary Gods in Shackles (http://www.godsinshackles.com) exposing unthinkable atrocities against elephants by temples in Kerala, India. Last year state authorities said they would strengthen rules to improve the situation, but the winds of change can hardly be felt. Sangita is the founder, executive director and President of the Voice for Asian Elephants Society. And she continues to be a strong voice for a major change in how we treat captive elephants. Thank you, Sangita, for your tireless fight! Petter https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-54026294

23.01.2022 The desert elephants we found in Namibia were generally in small groups of up to seven or eight animals. Occasionally they would form a larger group. This elephant is part of one of the smaller groups.

21.01.2022 Oops, these humpback whales have definitely taken a wrong turn. With such large populations of humpback whales on both east and west coasts of Australia, animal...s are exploring and displaying all sorts of unusual behaviours. In the 1980s Humphrey the Humpback Whale mistakenly ventured up the Sacramento River in the Bay Area, California. A mixture of humpback whale feeding calls, pipe-clanging and boat coralling eventually coerced Humphrey to freedom. Hopefully these whales will also swim to freedom.
21.01.2022 Did you know that elephants communicate through a wide range of sounds. These range from ultra-sound (below the range of our hearing although its possible we might feel it) to high pitched trumpets? They also use dust and mud as a form of sunscreen and explains this elephants appearance.

18.01.2022 Impalas sparring. Impalas are one of the most common African antelopes. They can run faster than 60 km/h, leap 10 m across the ground and 3 m high. Female impalas do not have horns. Rams horns take years to develop and older rams have a more dominant position in their society. 17.01.2022 Elephants are keystone species in that they have a big effect on the local environment which, in turn, impacts other animals and plants in the area.
16.01.2022 An interesting perspective on making change.
16.01.2022 If youre thinking of going to Africa I strongly suggest you consider volunteering. Its certainly quiet at the moment, but once things pick up the tourist routes get very packed. Ive seen, time and time again, one car find an animal and its quickly joined by half a dozen more. It quickly becomes a circus. The good news is that there is an alternative. Try volunteering. I much prefer it because: -Youre directly contributing to the well-being of the communities in the area... you are in. - You will usually be alone and not part of a group of cars. - Youll have an authentic experience, meet local people and see how they live. I volunteered with the Nakavango Conservation Programme in February and learned a huge amount about conservation, wildlife management and the different species in the area. We were also located half an hour or so from the iconic Victoria Falls. If you want to have a life changing experience, I recommend volunteering with these guys. You can contact them directly for dates (they run fortnightly programmes, so you can do single or multiple blocks of two weeks) or message me and I will put you in contact with them. See more
15.01.2022 This eagle had just taken off. We were approaching in our boat and I was hoping to get a little closer before it took off. I saw quite a few fish eagles in Botswana, either up in trees or on tree stumps looking for food.
15.01.2022 If you are joining me today for the Ghosts of the desert webinar and you havent registered through WebinarJam, you can join me using the Watch Video button. It starts in just under 20 minutes (Paris time zone) and will run for 45 - 60 minutes.
14.01.2022 This baby hippo would be very vulnerable if it was on its own as crocodiles usually live close to hippos. However, this young animals mother was right there with it keeping it safe.
13.01.2022 This baby hippo is safely with its mum in a group of a dozen or so hippos. Hippos spend much of the day in the water, partly to avoid sunburn. They are more active at night. This pair were photographed from the Chobe river in Botswana.
13.01.2022 Im tempted to ask for a caption for this image... This was one of a group of lions we had tracked for an hour or so. We had also seen zebra tracks, including those of a baby zebra. Happily, when we found the lions there was no sign of the zebra. #photoshelter #patreon #images #prints #books #membership #traveltuesday #lion #lioness #bigcatsofinstagram #africanwildlife #africanwildlifephotography #thisisafrica #africannature #wildlifeseekers #wildlifeafrica #wildestafrica @ncp_vicfalls #wildlifeconservation #predators #africanpredators #travelphotography #wildlifeplanet

08.01.2022 Getting close to an animal, especially its eyes, allows you to connect with it more deeply. Elephants are intelligent animals and have a very strong social system.

07.01.2022 Have you ever seen giraffe silhouetted against the setting sun or a group of elephants in the morning sun with the snow-covered peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background? Ive been fortunate to see these sights and many more but, like me, you may be concerned that future generations, perhaps your children or grandchildren will not have the same opportunity. Some people believe climate change is happening while others are convinced its simply part of a longer-term clima...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Elephants often spray themselves with water to help them to keep cool. They also use dust and mud as a way of protecting their skin from the sun. This image was taken during the heat of the early afternoon and this elephant has used water to cool her face.
