24.01.2022 The stark realities of the seriousness of the COVID 19 pandemic are close to home now. It is no longer something we watch on TV in another country. The National Cabinet has now placed Dentists on level 3 restrictions. This means that we are not to perform any procedure which can cause a spray of droplets into the air and we are to refrain from routine dental check ups. This effectively prevents us from doing routine dental check ups, any non urgent surgery, fillings and scale... and cleans. Temporary fillings done with hand instruments are acceptable. It is with a heavy heart that I announce that my dental practices are now closed for regular treatment until further notice. I make this decision to comply with the Dental Board of Australia and for the health and safety of my staff and myself. If you should have any concerns or difficulties or need advice please phone our mobile number 0408 665 161 I urge everyone to follow the advice of our health experts at this time and stay safe. This is an extremely dangerous situation for ourselves and our families. I will post again when we reopen. In the mean time I will post dental advice on self care and if you have any questions, please contact me DUE TO COVID19 WE ARE CLOSED UNTIL THE SITUATION IMPROVES AND THE DENTAL BOARD OF AUSTRALIA LIFTS RESTRICTIONS. 23.01.2022 Orthodontics - growing beautiful faces. Children are beautiful & cute. As they age their faces grow & change. How do we encourage them to grow attractive & full faces with a lovely profile & well-defined lips. I will list the most important points & in future posts will describe in detail. Growing great faces has to do with how things work. 1) Children need to be introduced to chewing hard tough food early 2) they need to keep their lips together other than for eating & tal...king 3) they need to breathe through their nose 4) as soon as they are on solid food the tip of their tongue should rest against the roof of their mouth 5) they need to swallow correctly - once on solid food swallow should involve the squeezing of a piece of food against the roof of their mouth, directing it down their throat & not thrusting the tongue forward between their teeth as babies do when on liquids. 22.01.2022 Orthodontics - growing beautiful faces. 5) A correct swallow pattern is vital. When babies are feeding on a liquid diet, their swallow pattern is very different to what they should have when they are eating solid food. The baby swallow involves thrusting the tongue back & forth between their gums (no teeth yet) - the reason is that in breastfeeding this stimulates the mother to release her milk & carries the milk back to the throat. However, once a child begins on solid & tex...tured food the swallow pattern should change to one where the tongue acts against the roof of the mouth to squeeze the food back down the throat. this is why it is important to not prolong breastfeeding & when introducing the child to solid food don't use the mushy baby food, but instead to provide food with texture. Otherwise, the child becomes confused & often fails to develop a correct swallow. Struggles in this area may require a tongue-tie release or more patience on the part of the mother - this stage of development can involve messy feedings until the child 'gets it' - be encouraged it is worth the effort. 21.01.2022 Orthodontics - growing beautiful faces. 1) chewing hard food. The texture & hardness of our diet is a vitally important factor in correct facial development. It is estimated that we only use a fraction of the chewing force compared to our 'primitive' ancestors. The effects of this on the face was observed by Dr Weston-Price in his detailed study of the 'primitive' peoples of the world back in the 1930's. Recently I attended a lecture series by Dr Tim Bromwich, prodigy of the ...late David Enlow (author of one of the most authoritative textbooks on facial growth), he agreed & showed us how our modern diet has become so soft that it is only a fraction of the toughness that it used to be.Look up the link http://darwinian-medicine.com/how-the-western-diet-has-cha/ For our children - as soon as a baby begins to chew on things, give them hard food like a raw carrot to gnaw on & continue to encourage them to have hard food with texture - skip the mushy baby foods, they are largely the source of our modern problems. this may make mealtime messy, but it is natural & leads to correct dietary habits. Recently it has become known that chewing a special very hard chewing gum can help reverse the harm of overly soft food - this gum is made from Mastiha Resin from Cyprus. See more

17.01.2022 Orthodontics - What can go wrong as a child grows. The most common problem I come across is lack of growth in the upper jaw. Because the lower teeth fit inside the upper teeth when closed, if the upper jaw has not grown fully, then the lower teeth will become crowded. you can see this in Sally's photos - the upper jaw is narrow & short, lacking the space for her canine teeth & this has caused crowding up & tipping inwards of her lower teeth. This reduces the space for the to...ngue & often causes it to become bunched up, reducing the space at the back of the throat & can lead to snoring & breathing problems during sleep - and so is a serious health concern. Sally is 10 years old & her problems will worsen if left. Upper jaws stop growing at age 12, but the lower jaw only begins rapid growth during puberty & continues until much later (age 21-23 in boys). This is why it is vital that these situations are not left until teenage years as has so often been the practice in the past. With appliances, we can correct the lack of growth in the upper jaw. 17.01.2022 Orthodontics - Making Great faces. Let's look at real people now. Notice the full face of Scarlett Johannson, her defined cheekbones, full lips & in profile a cheek line which follows her nose. This works for guys also. Does this mean then that everyone would look the same? Not at all - the aim of treatment is to fulfill the genetics of the patient, without the unfortunate consequences of our modern lifestyle, which disturb the natural growth process. So racial & family var...iations are still retained & the face is enhanced to look more beautiful. it is like 'the way nature intended'. In my next post, I will share the natural way to grow a beautiful face then what can go wrong & what we can do to help. Please share this site with all parents & grandparents - so that we can achieve the best for our kids. See more

11.01.2022 Orthodontics - growing beautiful faces. 2) Lips together naturally, except for eating (putting food in mouth) & talking. The position & uprightness of the front teeth is determined by the balance of forces between the lips & the tongue. So it is important that the lips are together for the eruption of the teeth & also for continuing stability of tooth position (even after any orthodontic treatment). This means chewing with lips together. Another extremely important fact abou...t lip position is in growing children, holding the lips together correctly, helps stimulate forward growth in the lower jaw, so that we get a balance between the 2 jaws. (Babies have a very short lower jaw & so very little chin) Notice the differences in the facial muscles & the teeth, in the patient treated by Dr John Mew in the picture. I had the opportunity to attend lectures by Dr Mew a few years ago where he demonstrated the benefits of restoring correct mouth habits in his patients. Difficulties in this area, need to be carefully diagnosed & then therapy by a Speech Therapist or Breathing Therapist can help. See more

09.01.2022 We attended the IAO annual dinner. Australia was well represented with 55 dentists out of a total of 300. Well it is back home tomorrow. Back to work Thursday

09.01.2022 Orthodontics -growing beautiful faces. 4) When not talking or eating, the tip of the tongue should rest against the roof of the mouth just behind the upper front teeth. It is in this position that the muscles of the jaws relax with the teeth slightly apart. It is also from this position that we begin a swallow, with the food or liquid behind & lying on the top surface of the tongue as the middle section of the tongue is forced up against the roof of the mouth squeezing the fo...od back & down the throat. It is also recognized in physiotherapy that this correct tongue position is vital to establish a stable & correct neck posture. Difficulties in this area need to be carefully assessed - sometimes a tongue tie may need a surgical release, it may be associated with breathing difficulties & so need medical help & sometimes it may be that the child has developed a bad habit (in which case we may use the 'Myobrace" system &/or refer to a speech therapist or breathing therapist). 04.01.2022 I have always gone to great efforts to continue to learn and to stay up to date. For the next 4 days I Will be attending the IAO conference, keeping up to date in orthodontics so I can bring quality orthodontics and TMJ treatment to my patients.

03.01.2022 Orthodontics - growing beautiful faces. 3) Correct breathing through the nose. This is one of the most important aspects of a child's development - babies are born as nasal breathers, but sometimes things go wrong, such as allergies, a prolonged cold which never fully resolves, recurring tonsillitis & adenoiditis, leading to a mouth-breathing habit. It has been recognized for a long time that mouth-breathing leads to growing a long skinny face, a narrow jaw, crowded teeth & ...a child which does not flourish in physical growth & now researchers are showing that mouth-breathing is often associated with reduced educational abilities. All parents need to watch for this problem carefully - any cold or sniffle which does not correct after a week needs to be addressed by your medical doctor & if it still does not clear, ask for a referral to an ENT specialist & say that you are concerned that the problem is corrected, even if that means surgery. We often have to refer directly to an ENT, as this issue has been left far too long. We also work with a specialist breathing therapist to overcome mouth breathing habits & the associated problems which result. See more

03.01.2022 Keeping up to date & developing new skills & techniques. I have always been committed to advancement & continuing education. I have just completed the third course under Dr Jean on dental implants - it is a privilege & inspiring to be able to learn from such an accomplished & learned surgeon. (His heavy Korean accent keeps me on the edge of my seat - no chance of mind wandering - the lectures are draining as I don’t want to miss anything.)

02.01.2022 I am currently on the IAO conference (International Association for Orthodontics. Dr Brayden Weber is here also and together we are benefitting greatly. We are learning more to bring back to the practice.
