24.01.2022 I was commissioned to write a work for The City of Traralgon Brass Band back in 2018. The band wished to celebrate a reciprocal visit to them by their, ‘sister’ band, the Amiens Band, (from France). The City of Traralgon Band was then a C Grade Brass Band, soon to be promoted to B Grade. The Amiens Band was a strong B Grade Brass Band that competed in the Aust Championships some years ago. I was asked to write a major work, an own choice type item with wide audience appeal, n...ot necessarily a test piece. Traralgon band toured the French Battlefields in 2015 playing Remembrance Services for local soldiers who did not return home. They were hosted by the Amiens Band which is largely involved in the ANZAC Services held at Villers-Bretonneux. This successful tour has seen Latrobe City and Villers-Bretonneux establish a Friendship City relationship. During their visit, it was planned to have the two Bands combine for a Gala Concert where they would premiere the work. Unfortunately, the Amiens Band had to cancel the trip, however, the Traralgon Band went ahead with performing the work at the concert. I wrote the work in three distinct sections. 1) depicts the brutality, relentlessness, and futility of battle. An abrupt finish to the first section signifies the sudden Ceasefire that occurred in 1918. 2) a homage to the dead of both Australian and French troops. This section features two buglers, one French, the other Australian both playing their bugle calls to honour the dead, ‘Last Post’ for us and ‘Aux Morts’ for them. I combined both calls, including the snare drum part (senza snares) that accompanies ‘Aux Morts’, and placed Abide With Me as a backdrop to the calls. The buglers were meant to be positioned on opposite sides of the stage/memorial so each call could be more easily heard. The chimes are, in effect, two sets (French and Australian) of church bells in the distance. 3) this section is a simple celebration of the friendship between both cities and associated bands. The music interweaves Song of Australia with snippets of the French National Anthem. The music moves into a replay a short fragment from the 1st section before coming to a close. Our own Josh Geddes conducted the World Premiere performance on the day. This work would be perfect for Services on and around Remembrance Day. It’s aimed at a very good C Grade/Easy B Grade standard. Please message me if you’d be interested in purchasing it. The cost would be around $60 (I haven’t worked out a definite figure yet but it will be close to $60). It’s not up on my website just yet however, I’m happy to forward a score to anyone interested in checking it out for possible performance by your own band. There’s currently no Concert Band version but, if there’s interest, I’ll arrange one. Let me know if you’d be interested in a Concert Band version. I haven’t titled it just yet so it’s currently going by its ‘working title’, Traralgon. See more

21.01.2022 It was five years ago now that I spent 6 months teaching some 10 students in Oman. The Post below just came up on my Timeline as a reminder of that time. I trailed my Mastering the Foundations of Music video package with these students. I figured if it worked with 10 students whose 2nd language was English, then I'm on a winner. I'm still so proud of Abu and Sabiha in particular for their hard work over those six months and achieving such a great result. The other students I ...taught were all terrific people, too, and I have such fond memories of all of them. A Post from 2015: Just had the best news. One of my students in Oman, Abu, has just gotten his grade 5 theory results back from the UK (the equivalent to the AMEB Grade 5 theory) and he managed a distinction - 91%. I couldn't be more proud of him. He was a joy to teach and is one of the funniest people I know. I couldn't understand Arabic but I knew he was funny....he would have us all laughing every day on numerous occasions. He also had the 'smarts'. I've just messaged him telling him how proud of him I am and letting him know that I also got 91%, too, when I did my Grade 5 Theory back in 1973!!! I used my online theory lessons to teach my Omani students when I was there....one of the girls got 90% for her Grade 4 theory - the highest in her band. Gotta be happy about that, too. Looks like the lessons did the job I designed them to do.

20.01.2022 This salute formed a section of a composition of mine that was commissioned by the Traralgon Brass Band. Given my Military background and this time of year, I decided to make this short video featuring the 'Last Post' bugle/trumpet calls of France and Australia. In the composition both players were to be positioned on either side of the band...something I couldn't effectively do, aurally, in the video so I decided to post the 'notes' too so you could follow each call through.

13.01.2022 A year or two ago I was asked by Patrick Pickett, conductor of the QLD Pops Orchestra, to arrange a Finale for him based around the Scottish song, The Parting Glass. He gave me a very good plan of what he envisaged then left it to me to put the notes together for his vocal soloists, orchestra, choir and bagpipes. Here's the finished result...a live performance. He said he wanted a big finish...I think that's what I gave him note-wise. The orchestra, choir and bagpipes, with Patrick at the helm, did the rest. https://youtu.be/uk78uMZ214U

12.01.2022 As an arranger you often get the chance to arrange some beautiful music. This is one of them. I still love how this one turned out. I was extremely fortunate to have a number of emails with the composer, Brendan Graham, who asked me to 'keep it simple and peaceful'. He was very happy with the outcome. For those who may be interested, I used nothing more complex than Lovelock 1st Year Harmony, the first couple of chapters...just to prove that simple Harmony is as useful today as it always has been. For example, I used passing notes in 3rds a lot, not parallel progressions. Sarah did a wonderful job with the vocals as did the choir. I listen to this recording today and find very little that I would change.

10.01.2022 'Through a Soldier's Eyes' for A Grade Brass Band. After more than 20 years trying, I've finally managed to get a Brass Band recording. The video shows the thoughts and I had in mind when originally composing the work, between Jan and Jul, 2000.

09.01.2022 I'm honoured that, during this down time, Patrick Pickett and the QLD Pops orchestra are putting up on You Tube 'live' performances of a few of my arrangements for them. This one began as a version for RAAF Central back in the 1990s. I was asked, by Patrick, to rearrange it for his orchestra. This is the result. https://www.youtube.com/watch

The next week or two will see us sorting out the packaging requirements and then they'll be on sale. There'll be a 'pre-release' release, too. Now I can rejoin the 'land of the living'.

04.01.2022 This Concert Band version of the march, Regal Celebration, was commissioned by Cairns' Bands in honour of Cairns' WW1 hero, PTE Caleb Shang, a couple of years ago. I was asked to write it for a Level 3 Concert Band and also a C Grade standard Brass band. The idea was to offer it free of charge to Cairns school bands with the hope of being able to combine both types of bands for a performance. I'm not sure if a combined Concert Band/Brass Band performance ever eventuated. I still enjoy listening to the march. $40. The Brass Band video is on the Australasian Brass Bands Facebook page. 01.01.2022 Had a great night the other night with members of the Ballarat Memorial Concert Band, conducted by my old mate, Mark Witham. Mark initiated the idea of a Zoom get together with the members of the band and me for about 90 mins or so. We had a great time and talked about everything from tuning to conducting, key centers and even why the oboe is traditionally used to play the tuning note, given the notes A and Bb are amongst the most unstable on the instrument. Mark, I hope those who attended the meeting managed to get a lot out of the session...I know I did. Thanks heaps to both you and the band. Looking forward to next time.
