11.01.2022 BBC Radio 3's program 'Composer of the Week' is a series of daily 1-hour programs examining the lives of composers, and their music, in detail. Last week, Percy Grainger was the subject of this 5-part audio documentary, produced by Donald Macleod. The entire program is available to stream online for the next three weeks, for those living outside the UK. It's well worth a listen! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000c4kd... #bbc #bbcradio3 #graingermuseum #unimelb

02.01.2022 Happy 81st birthday to Percy Grainger's 'hoard-house'! Construction began in 1935 and the Museum first opened its doors #OnThisDay in 1938. In 1969, Grainger's close friend Cyril Scott reflected on his bemusement at Grainger's idea of creating a Museum about himself and his world: "Manuscripts, clothes, books, pictures, photographs and thousands of letters are to be housed in this ‘hoard-house’, as he calls it, including, to my horror, papiermâché effigies of his friends, li...ving and dead. At first he thought to have us all there as wax figures, à la Madame Tussauds, but when I wrote and warned him that waxworks were highly inflammable (he has a phobia about fire) he modified his original idea." [1] Today we say a very big thank you to everyone who has visited us over the past 81 years! Swipe through to see a collection of photos of the Museum at various stages of its history. #graingermuseum #otd #unimelb [1] Cyril Scott, Bone of Contention (London: The Aquarian Press, 1969), p. 71.

01.01.2022 Today is #InternationalVolunteerDay. Our volunteers are the face of the museum. Whether students at The University of Melbourne or broader music enthusiasts, each of our volunteers brings interests and stories that contribute to the museum’s warm atmosphere. They’re at the front desk welcoming visitors as they arrive, informing them on the history and contents of the collection and listening to visitors’ thoughts and connections to Percy and his work. Our volunteers also help us look after the collections, clean the exhibits, make sure the collections are safe and that everything is in its right place. #thankyou #celebrate #IVD2019
