24.01.2022 I am terribly saddened by the recent passing of Mr Bryan Nice, a former teacher at Kaplan International College in Perth, Australia, where Bryan and I were colleagues for several years. Bryan was a tremendous man, both of character and knowledge, and he will be remembered forever for his wit, charm, humour, mischief, wide knowledge of many things, boisterous energy, love of teaching and great sense of fun. In his earlier years, he was a pilot for the British flying group the... Red Arrows. I remember him well for walking down corridors, carrying a sheaf of papers and books and looking, in his words, 'grave and magisterial.' However, the thing that I remember most about Bryan was his ageless energy, as he was still teaching at the age of 84. He will remain in my heart a role model for me for a long time. Vale Bryan.



24.01.2022 The best part of teaching - the VERY BEST! - is when students use the grammar and vocabulary to tell their own stories! Right now, I am teaching my face to face class how to tell stories, and they are now creating and telling their own. No coursebooks. No worksheets. No computers. No DVDs. No games.... Just their own stories and the grammar tools I taught them. BEAUTIFUL! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

22.01.2022 Yesterday, I spoke at the North Metropolitan TAFE 2018 Symposium, delivering two 90 minute workshops on Gramatica. Both were fully attended, and all the reports said that they were very well received. I always enjoy talking with my teaching peers about grammar and teaching pedagogy, so it was an excellent day! I also caught up with some former colleagues, shared ideas, networked and had a great time. Thanks, Mike Morrissey, Rebecca Wall, Kerry Smith, Nena Johnston, all the or...ganisers and all the teachers who came to my two workshops. A great day!



21.01.2022 Well, the (free!) first Gramatica course is online and students have signed up and learning! It's very exciting to hear that they are learning a lot and enjoying themselves. I'm now working on the second course. There will be many courses!

It's original meaning was so vastly removed from what we understand today that this hobby etymologist thought it just had to... be shared. nice (adj.) late 13c., "foolish, stupid, senseless," from Old French nice (12c.) "careless, clumsy; weak; poor, needy; simple, stupid, silly, foolish," from Latin nescius "ignorant, unaware," literally "not-knowing," from ne- "not" (from PIE root *ne- "not") + stem of scire "to know" (see science). "The sense development has been extraordinary, even for an adj." [Weekley] -- from "timid" (pre-1300); to "fussy, fastidious" (late 14c.); to "dainty, delicate" (c. 1400); to "precise, careful" (1500s, preserved in such terms as a nice distinction and nice and early); to "agreeable, delightful" (1769); to "kind, thoughtful" (1830).

08.01.2022 After I taught students how to tell a story, one student made this story in his mind! He didn't write it!!!!!!! "Last November, I applied for a student visa to study English because I had thought to do it, and now I should study English until December." Excellent!

02.01.2022 Recently, I started wondering if the old truism that children learn foreign languages better than adults is actually true. Yes, the research shows this, but that's not my point. Research shows exactly what is being measured, and that is the speed and efficiency by which children and adults learn a foreign language. Yet two things made me wonder if we are not seeing the whole picture. Firstly, recent advances in neuroplasticity have demonstrated that neural networks and linka...ges can be reformed or strengthened well into adulthood. Practice may not necessarily make perfect, but it certainly DOES make permanent. The more you do something, the better you become, even well into adulthood. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, is it possible that we are only looking at the learning side? Does this truism assume that the teaching is done in the best possible way? If not, could there be another way? What does the research show about the pedagogy? Is the way that we are teaching English necessarily the best way? I would be interested in your thoughts.
