21.01.2022 The reason some Primary School teachers have difficulty in teaching English Grammar has been highlighted in an article in the Daily Telegraph from 2016 where it stated "Grammar disastrously fell out of favour in schools during the 1980s, creating a generation of students who left school without learning the mechanics of language. Senior educators described it as an 'intergenerational problem' that is now affecting teachers and today's students". If this is a problem facing your school or you are looking for resources to enhance your English Grammar program then Grammar in a Nutshell may provide the solution. Grammar in a Nutshell is an online e-learning resource which is a powerful tool for teachers to use to teach English Grammar to students. 20.01.2022 As the new school year is about to start we are holding back our price rise for a short time to allow schools and teachers to take advantage of last years prices. In addition, NESA has requested that we offer a discount to casual teachers. Currently this is 20% so a casual teacher can register for $176. To make this discount fair for casual teachers that paid full price in the past we will be offering a special discount off future courses. Please let your colleagues know about this offer while it still lasts.

13.01.2022 The following was extracted from the conversation [dot] com -grammar-matters-and-should-be-taught-differently "I’m going to put it out there - most teachers don’t know enough about how the English language works [aka grammar], and this inevitably impacts upon student literacy outcomes." "When we don’t teach grammar we stifle creativity and limit possibilities for many children. We leave them to fall back on what they intuitively know about language, and as a consequence they ...simply write like they speak." "Subsequent teacher comments on their writing are vague and unhelpful - ‘too informal, too colloquial, too chatty, rambling, repetitive’. Kids need more direction than this; they need someone who can show them what is possible in written language and how to achieve it." "The disappearance of grammar from schools - and most teacher education faculties - for decades means many of today’s teachers have no subject knowledge of grammar, nor any idea of how to teach it effectively." The Daily Telegraph in 2016 stated "Teachers have been given a new grammar manual, which is so simplistic it even explains what a sentence is, amid fears many blundering educators struggle to explain literacy basics to students". Grammar in a Nutshell is an online e-learning resource which is a powerful tool for teachers to use to teach English Grammar students. For more information see https://grammarinanutshell.com.au

06.01.2022 No more awkward Grammar moments! We’ve all had those moments where a student asks us a question and we are stumped for the answer. No shame in that. Teachers aren’t supposed to know everything right?! But when it comes to grammar it can be a tad embarrassing, intimidating, or, at the very least, awkward. How would you go answering these sample grammar questions: - When do I use its versus it’s?... - Is it toward or towards? - I’m confused about periods and quotation marks, can you help me? Feeling competent to answer such questions isn’t helped by the fact that most of us haven’t learnt formal grammar. The exception of course are those from a non-English speaking background, or those who are proficient at other languages. In fact, one of the great ironies of the English language, is that non-native speakers often have a better understanding of English grammar than those whose first language is English! If this relates to you, don’t worry you’re not alone! Research at the University of Canberra in 2014 concluded that nearly half of all teachers worldwide do not feel confident when teaching grammar. The researchers then added: the majority of language teachers would like some content that would help them better understand grammar and become more confident when teaching. (Eleni Petraki and Deborah Hill, University of Canberra, 2011) Grammar in a Nutshell https://grammarinanutshell.com.au/pd exists to improve teacher confidence in grammar. Furthermore, teachers are required to be proficient in grammar as per the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Standard 2.5.2 and 6.2.2). By registering for the ONLINE Grammar in a Nutshell course, teachers will not only improve their grammar and literacy skills but they can complete an entire 1/3 of their professional development requirement in ten, simple, online modules. Click here now to see how Grammar in a Nutshell can, not only save you those awkward grammar moments, but can save you up to 75% on comparable professional development courses.
