23.01.2022 If you've travelled on the Trail between Boolarra and Darlimurla recently you will have noticed that we've started work on reclaiming the Meadows area and the adjacent aqueducts. Most of the work is clearing weeds and saplings and rehabilitating paths and waterways. We hope to have the land restored as an area of natural beauty before winter, plus a picnic area designed to allow people with low mobility to enjoy the Meadows.

22.01.2022 Should be a Rail Trail?

17.01.2022 Mirboo Collieries coal mine at Darlimurla. There is some evidence that a coal mine was started at Darlimurla in the late 1890s, near to the Rail Trail: "In the 1890s, brown coal was also found in the upper reaches of the Morwell River catchment along the Little Morwell River... in the vicinity of Darlimurla. This coal was assessed to exist over an area of eight to ten square miles and was 30 feet thick at the Darlimurla rail siding. Tests on this coal showed it to be high in resinous matter with possible byproducts of varnish, pigments and paraffi n. This coal deposit was assessed as being an older seam than those upper seams in the lower Morwell River valley. Some mining of this coal occurred but no longer-term utilisation eventuated." (Coal Mining Heritage Study, 2008). Does anyone know where this mine was located? ================

17.01.2022 Sentinel Times Feb 14 2019 THE way is now cleared for the Great Southern Rail Trail to be extended from Leongatha to Nyora. South Gippsland Shire CEO Tim Tamlin last week met with Peter Chau, Executive General Manager of Property at VicTrack to sign a heads of agreement document to give the council the green light to extend the trail firstly from Leongatha to Korumburra. Mr Tamlin said he was very pleased that the council finally had security of access to the rail corridor en...abling the rail trail to proceed once funding is secured. The Heads of Agreement will eventually be superseded with a lease. The lease is still some time away from being finalised as this stretch of land has proved to be surprisingly complex. There have been so many bits and pieces that have been accessed by adjoining landholders over the years and this all needs to be resolved. Our initial aim was to have a document from VicTrack confirming access to the Leongatha to Korumburra corridor. This would allow council to pursue the establishment of this section without further delay. However, Peter and his team have provided us with a much greater section, all the way to Nyora. This will help us to progress the trail to Nyora and beyond. VicTrack have certainly been a wonderfully proactive team of people to deal with, Mr Tamlin said. The council recently engaged SGS Economics to undertake a cost benefit analysis and economic impact study for an extension of the trail from Leongatha to Clyde and other connections such as Nyora to Woolamai. South Gippsland Shire is working with Cardinia Shire Council, City of Casey and Bass Coast Shire Council for the extension of the rail trail which could ultimately create a 168km trail from Clyde to Yarram with coastal links to Port Welshpool, Port Albert and coastal areas in Bass Coast, making it the largest rail trail in Australia. I understand that the community has been anxious for us to get on with work on extending the rail trail that will connect our two major towns, and this is our first priority now that we have the security of this agreement. Not only can we get on with initial preparatory activities, we can also commence our work seeking grant funding for the construction of the trail. This is a very exciting moment for the future of South Gippsland, Mr Tamlin said. See more

14.01.2022 PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! Most of the time our Rail Trail is beautiful and tranquil, and we can easily forget that it is surrounded by rugged bushland that is prone to the vagaries of fire, flood, falling trees and landslips. In other words, IT CAN BE DANGEROUS, so please exercise caution when you use the Trail, especially at this time of year when the wild weather can make parts of the Trail quite treacherous. We've had a number of trees down recently, and just this week a nasty land slip in a cutting about a kilometre from the Mirboo North end caused a temporary closure of the Trail. The Trail has been cleared, and the bank appears to be stable, but another bout of severe weather could change that, so don't take any chances - if you're worried about your safety, then please stay away until we get some better weather.

12.01.2022 Ken Griffiths (South Gippsland Council) and Warren Warner (Wednesday Warriors) reviewing the progress of our Culvert rehab program. If you're thinking of checking out the culverts yourself, please remember that this is very much a work-in-progress. Culvert 11 is virtually complete and worth a look, but Culverts 1,15, 26 & 27 are very much en-train and quite difficult to negotiate. Please be careful!

07.01.2022 The Warriors have started on the rehabilitation work at Culvert 11. This culvert will be one of the Rail Trail's centrepieces, with improved access and family spaces for an important part of our local heritage.

07.01.2022 To the Committee and Members of the Grand Ridge Rail Trail, On behalf of the Lumen Christi Primary School community of Churchill, I would like to thank you for the wonderful work you do in improving the conditions on the track and surrounds.. Our school enjoyed a wonderful walk on the Grand Ridge rail trail today, with more than half of our students walking over 6km return to the first bridge and the 5/6 class venturing even further to complete more than 8km return. Even o...ur Preps walked 4 km return. This morning I conducted a short pictorial briefing of the trail so the children were happy to look out for the markers, new and old, and were excited to discover some culverts along the way. What glorious weather we had just to top off a great day. Best wishes and thanks again. Regards Wellbeing Leader Lumen Christi

03.01.2022 Run Report GRRT event #46 (after a long 44 week break)! The rain did not dampen the spirits of the 19 parkrunners that joined us at Grand Ridge Rail Trail park...run this morning to celebrate the return to parkrun! Chloe and I always enjoy a visit to Mirboo North and the beautiful Grand Ridge Rail Trail. After the short run briefing that outlined some of the new COVID safe requirements from Run Director Liz Radcliffe, we headed off down the trail. Along the way I chatted with parkrun tourists, Rachel Axton and Philip Coldwell. Phil had been waiting almost 12 months to celebrate his 100 milestone. What a way to enjoy during a holiday to Mirboo North. It was great to see local first timers Indigo Lawson and Shareena Boyd who came well prepared in their rain poncho’s. Congratulations to Darcy Linforth and Erica Drangsholt who crossed the line almost together as a first male and female finishers. A huge thank you to my fellow volunteers who embraced the wet conditions Stacey, Jessie, Libby, Mark, Murray, Kat, Chloe and Liz. Michelle Harris - Run Report Writer

03.01.2022 The Age, 12 May 2018, Adan Carey Rare native predator found in Victorian forest A rare spot-tailed quoll has been found in Victoria’s alpine region, the first sighting of the elusive predator in more than two years. The discovery, by a hiker armed with a remote-sensor camera and some sardines, has prompted the Andrews government to suspend logging operations in a nearby state forest.... It has also renewed calls from conservation groups to put an end to native logging in the area and set up the so-called Great Forest National Park. But the government and state-owned forestry enterprise VicForests said the quoll sighting was a sign of the good health of the natural environment. The endangered animal, also known as a tiger quoll, was filmed in the Erica state forest near Mount Baw Baw on Anzac Day by Milan Stupar.

01.01.2022 What a fantastic effort by everyone involved. Well done!

01.01.2022 Hi parkrunners, it’s Jessie here, your RD for the week! I caught up with popular local Neil Trease this week to ask a few questions about the ‘Wednesday Warrio...rs’. Who they are, what they do and how they support us here at the Grand Ridge Rail Trail parkrun. Tune in this week to hear a bit more about them! I’m sure I’m not alone here, who else never actually thought about how our beautiful Trail was maintained? Who removed all the trees that fell across the path? Who maintains the track? Well you’re about to find out! Part 1 with Neil Trease. The Wednesday Warriors are a group of local gentlemen all over the age of 65. Our eldest member is 87 years young and still active! We also have a member who travels from Venus Bay on a regular basis. Most Wednesdays, we have about 20 members turn up to keep GRAND RIDGE RAIL TRAIL and Lyrebird Walk in a safe and good condition for the public to use. Our work shed we work from is at 3 Inglis Avenue, Mirboo North.
