25.01.2022 The link between good oral hygiene and the body Your mouth is the entry point of many bacteria, said Dr. Steven Grater, Pennsylvania Dental Association To keep this bacteria from going into your body, cleaning your mouth (brushing, flossing and rinsing) is necessary. Studies also have shown that periodontal disease may be linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, preterm births and low-birth weight babies. Research suggests that people with perio...dontal disease are nearly three times as likely to suffer from heart disease. Oral health problems can lead to difficulty speaking, chewing and swallowing, affecting your ability to consume the nutrition your body needs to stay healthy. Poor nutrition also can lead to tooth decay and obesity. In a recent study, researchers at the University of Buffalo examined 65 children, ages two through five, who were treated for cavities in their baby teeth. Nearly 28 percent of them had a body-mass index indicating they were either overweight or obese. "A clean mouth will lead to a clean body," Dr. Grater said. Although you clean your mouth every day at home, regular checkups to the dentist will prevent additional disease that can likely cause you to be sick.

24.01.2022 How much sugar is hidden in your trolley? The average teenager consumes around 20 teaspoons of sugar a day instead of the recommended 6 teaspoons or less We all know about the sugar in cakes, cordials, ice cream and biscuits. Food manufacturers cleverly hide sugar in seemingly healthy foods like muesli bars, flavoured yoghurts, dried fruit, pasta sauces, tinned soups, salad dressings, tomato and barbecue sauces and marinades... Sugar can come in many disguises. It can be labelled with over 50 different names - from agave nectar, dextrose to tapioca sugar, luring shoppers into buying goods they may not be aware are doing them harm #dentist #dental #grandisdentalwa #perth #perthdentist #teeth #smile #beautiful #dentists #dentalpractice #lips #newsmile #dentalassistant #dentalhygienest #frontoffice #appointment #grandisdermal #dermal #skin #skintreatments #dentalhealthweek2020 #sugar

13.01.2022 Lets talk wisdom teeth! Wisdom teeth are the last molar tooth and often cause most people a lot of grief when they are erupting into the mouth. This can be because there is not enough space in the mouth or because the wisdom teeth are not in an ideal position. The last thing we want to happen is for your wisdom teeth to become infected and painful. Dr Gretchen extracted these two wisdom teeth in the dental chair. It is important to know what position your wisdom teeth are in and if they are likely to cause you any discomfort. Call our friendly team on 6404 2899 to book in a consultation to discuss your wisdom teeth before they give you any discomfort!

09.01.2022 Now that our community are all wearing masks we thought we would share a few tips to avoid something dentists are calling 'mask mouth' Mask mouth is an oral side affect from wearing a mask for an extended period of time. Remember to breathe through your nose! This is probably the biggest tip- breathing through your mouth can lead to a dry mouth, reducing quanities of saliva which help to fight bacteria in the mouth. ... Make sure you stay hydrated! Just because you are wearing a mask does not mean you should reduce your water in take, it is just as important now to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated to avoid a dry mouth. If you notice that you have particularly smelly breath under your mask make sure you are keeping up with your oral hygiene habits, brushing 2x daily and flossing. You could also limit strong flavoured foods such as coffee, garlic and onions. Chewing a sugar free gum may also help. By following all these tips this should help to reduce your risk of bad breath, increased risk of tooth decay and inflamed gums. And when lock down is over if we are all still wearing masks make sure that you book in for your regular examination and hygiene appointments! Stay safe WA and continue to wear masks and keep each other safe

02.01.2022 Are you due for your examination and hygiene appointment? While acknowledging that data on COVID-19 is sparse due to its relatively recent emergence, the German Society of Dentistry and Oral Medicine (DGZMK), reported by Dental Tribune, has stressed the importance of dental prevention and the systemic relevance of dentistry , especially in times of the pandemic. Citing a number of recent studies that suggest good oral health and reduced severity in the course of cases ...of COVID-19 are linked, Prof. Roland Frankenberger, president of the DGZMK stated: "In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, dentistry has a particularly important role to play in keeping the oral cavity healthy. Dental prophylaxis strengthens the immunocompetence at the point of entry of the virus and helps to avoid infection or to mitigate its course." A healthy oral cavity is a barrier against a wide range of diseases in normal circumstances and this remains true, notes Dr Frankenberger, in the case of COVID-19 which studies have suggested may take a more severe course where good oral hygiene has not been maintained. For more on this particular story and a listing of the three of the studies Dr Frankenberger cites, go to, Good oral health may prevent severe COVID-19 progression
