25.01.2022 In an effort to find easier and more efficient ways to maintain the Track over long distances and difficult terrain, we are pleased to have received funding for an All-Terrain Vehicle from Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR). This morning we took it through it capabilities on parts of the Mount Tassie Loop. We are very impressed how easy it handles soft ground, ruts, hill climbs and tight turns. No more lugging equipment on foot.

25.01.2022 Update: if considering accessing the track via Road 4 beware the road has a major impassable subsidence and many trees down from the Jumbuck Rd end. Video from the head of Billy’s Creek.

24.01.2022 Not far after Billy’s Creek Falls the valley starts to open up as you near Morwell NP and the creek crossing not so deep. The first photo is a diagonal creek crossing cut through the fallen tree. #grandstrzeleckitrack #strzeleckiranges #bushwalking #morwellnationalpark #bushwalkingvictoria

24.01.2022 Mack’s Creek is flowing nicely and crossing 4 is one crossing you have to expect to get wet.

22.01.2022 How well do you know the Track and environs? Here is question 5 of 10 of our cryptic quiz. Q. If life seems crappy and you need a change, go this way?

21.01.2022 Found on the Track today. Please contact us with verification details if you believe it is yours

20.01.2022 Hopefully only a couple weeks now to get out on the Track.

20.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology officially recorded 96mm of rain overnight in the 24 hour period to 9am. Although another local gauge was overflowing at its limit of 120mm, as well as a further 50mm since 9am to 5pm. This deluge sent the Tarra Falls and Tarra River into overload mode, breaking out at various places and crossing the road. Videos courtesy of Kylie Snape, Blackwarry.

19.01.2022 For the first six months of this year, Balook (Tarra Bulga NP) in particular, has recorded over 900mm rainfall and is still falling. The following article from Trail Hiking Australia (www.trailhiking.com.au) will help you with the right preparation and knowledge to enjoy the Track should the heavens open up with more rain. Hopefully, the Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted soon on shared facilities at our rest areas. Article Rainy weather doesn’t have to ruin your outdoor ad...Continue reading

19.01.2022 None of our page followers or committee members knew the answer to question 5 of 10 of our cryptic quiz. How well do you know the Track and environs? Q. If life seems crappy and you need a change, go this way?... A. Diaper Track. See more

18.01.2022 After the 7km Quickie hike yesterday on the Forest Track and Scenic Track at Tarra Bulga National Park, I thought I would tackle the 11km Quickie hike on the Goombala Road, West Face Track and Drysdale Road, reversed in a mostly ascending climb. https://www.grandstrzeleckitrack.org.au/richards-story-11k/

17.01.2022 REMINDER Tarra Valley Road is closed today from 7am to 5pm today between the Grand Ridge Road and Tarra Valley Caravan Park, so there will be no vehicle road access to Cyathea or Tarra Falls.

17.01.2022 Yesterday's Fungi Foray event run by David Akers, Friends of Tarra-Bulga National Park, was a success with 30 participants. A photo presentation was given before heading out into the park. Photo: Orange Pore Fungi (Favolascia Calocera) courtesy David Akers.

16.01.2022 How well do you know the features of the Track and environs? Here is the 4th of our 10 cryptic questions ... Sounding like another popular destination, this Valley has 'tea' instead of 'wine'?

14.01.2022 A gentle couple of kilometre walk this morning to check the track condition between Bird Rd bridge and crossing 4. The camp site at the bridge is excellent and the perfect place to wake up to the sound of Mack’s Creek flowing past. @ Macks Creek, Victoria, Australia

14.01.2022 From the Committee of Management of the Grand Strzelecki Track to our devoted followers and newcomers. "We would love to see you on the Track in the new year"

14.01.2022 Here we go again! It has been only two weeks and the forecast already is for snowfall on Friday and Saturday at Balook in Tarra Bulga NP. If visiting for restricted exercise, be weary of unstable trees and branches.

13.01.2022 Are you ready for a hike this weekend? Rest areas, camping and tracks are all open.

12.01.2022 Continuing our survey, this section is from Jumbuck overnight stop down to Road 4. Sections of this part of the track have been harvest in the past few years and several parts of the track had been redirected. All the track is open but several sections have very aggressive undergrowth regrowth making the track very heavy going with markers hard to see. We added pink marker tape in the sections where due to overgrowth the next marker was hard to identify. Several big branches have fallen on or near the track but none are blocking the track. There are several very large Mountain Ash trees in this part of the track and it’s definitely worth the walk. To be continued......

12.01.2022 ‘Important information for hikers’ as at 24th of March 2021 ROAD CLOSURES Tarra Valley Road closed due to extreme high rainfall causing the Tarra River to breach its banks and wash parts of the road away.... TRACK CONDITIONS Extreme high rainfall means all creek levels will be high and fast flowing for possibly a week. Extreme high winds means risk of falling trees and branches. 11.01.2022 There bas been heavy snowfall overnight, with more throughout today and forecasted for tomorrow. If venturing out, be cautious of unstable trees and unpredictable snowfall levels.

11.01.2022 Out and about in the Tarra Bulga National Park in Gippsland Victoria among the giant Mountain Ash trees and wet schlerophyll forest. With both the Tarra Bulga National Park and Morwell National Park linked by the Grand Strzelecki Track and three loop hikes, there is over 100km of hiking tracks to be absorbed in, and ranging from 1 hour to overnight. No excuse to get out and about this Easter and school holidays. Check out our website to help prepare for your next hiking and ...camping adventure. www.grandstrzeleckitrack.org.au

The Diaper Track and Tarra Valley Road Link Track sections of the Tarra Valley Loop will be closed. Hikers are to use Tarra Valley Road between the Great Forest Walk and Mountain Hickory Track in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. Be aware of cars travelling in both directions as it is a narrow winding road. Temporary directions:... Tarra Valley Loop (1 Day) from the Tarra Bulga NP Visitor Centre via Goombala Road, Mountain Hickory Track and Tarra Valley Road to Cyathea Falls and Tarra Falls, then the Great Forest Walk, Butlers Track, Duncans Track, Mountain Hickory Track and Goombala Road back to the Tarra Bulga NP Visitor Centre.

10.01.2022 EVENT NOTIFICATION Fungi Foray at Tarra-Bulga National Park Visitor Centre Carpark Sunday 9th of May at 9:30am. This Sunday coming is Mother's Day and it is also the day the Friends of Tarra-Bulga National Park are going to hold a Fungi Foray at Tarra-Bulga National Park. They understand you might have other commitments, but if you are available, it would be awesome if you can participate. It will be a relaxed and informal day and would encourage anyone who is interested to a...ttend (definitely no prior experience is necessary). A large variety of fungi is a feature of Tarra-Bulga National Park and right now is the best time of the year to see it. The day will commence with a short introductory talk in the Visitor Centre, which will cover: 1. Our local fungi. 2. Resources to identify fungi. 3. Tips for photographing fungi. 4. How to record your fungi sightings. Following the presentation they will head out for a stroll around the tracks to see what can be found. They will aim to finish around lunch time, for anyone that is still keen to continue foraying after lunch, and will head back out in search of more fungi (Probably down in the Tarra Valley). There is a limit on numbers so please either register on Parkconnect https://www.parkconnect.vic.gov.au//public-planned-activ/ or direct to David Akers, Friends of Tarra-Bulga National Park. 09.01.2022 The next part of our track inspection begins. This time we all met at the Junction Rd carpark of Morwell NP, the start of the park to park section of the track. We all piled into a single car and drove up to road 4 above the 160 marker to walk this section downhill back to Morwell NP. @ Jeeralang, Victoria, Australia

09.01.2022 Unfortunately not on the track but close to it on private land. I just had to share as it’s so beautiful.

08.01.2022 And not to mention the sounds of birdsong and permeating smells as the sun warms up the forest. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2987785891318572&id=240526249377897 https://www.grandstrzeleckitrack.org.au/tarra-bulga-nation/

08.01.2022 In the lead up to every summer, there is always a major safety concern around bushfire potentially impacting our local communities, including flora, fauna, business operators and visitors. Lighting of wood fires on the Track is prohibited as per our protocols, but we do allow the use of portable fuel stoves as the only acceptable method of cooking and heating. With funds raised from your purchases of maps, we were able to undertake this project to implement signage across th...e entrances and exits of tracks. We also received endorsement from the CFA and Victoria Police, and in particular, landowner and major sponsor Hancock Victorian Plantations (HVP) who allow us to share their land for you to enjoy hikes and use rest areas. We ask that you observe these signs with consideration to bushfire prevention and the ongoing safe use of the Track for other hikers.

07.01.2022 A side trip to Mt Tassie to measure up the tables that some low life’s decided to help themselves to. Never ceases to amaze me what people will steal. @ Mount Tassie

06.01.2022 Sorry to hear that many of you Melbournian's are restricted to staying home. As a local to the Track, I thought I would share a little story of the track when setting out today to do a small section not hiked before. Hope you can get here soon! More of the story to come. https://www.grandstrzeleckitrack.org.au/richards-story-7km/

06.01.2022 Road 4 to Billy’s Creek inspection. After a short break for lunch on road 4 we headed back on to the track and down towards the head of Billy’s Creek. This section is very steep as it drops into the valley. The track in this section is in reasonably good condition and only required a little work and very little marking tape to make the track obvious. Again many big Mountain Ash visible from the track. Even discovered the big old tree laying on the forest floor rotting away th...at’s in the photos. It was like a big whale skeleton washed a shore. It was so large I couldn’t find the end of the tree in the forest. As we got closer to the 160 marker (the first or last creek crossing) the creek started to become obvious as the rushing water got louder and louder. We have had some rain recently so the creek is high. It’s a beautiful sight as you round the bend and are faced with the creek directly in front of you. A beautiful place to sit and listen to the flowing water. By this time it was obvious we weren’t going to be able to go any further on this trip as it would mean walking out in the dark and none of the crew were up for that, so the decision was made to turn around and complete the creek walk another day. To be continued............

05.01.2022 When hikers and bushwalkers go on holiday. With medical experts around the world waxing lyrical about the diverse health benefits of bush-walking or any kind of ‘green exercise’, for that matter it is encouraging to learn that the proportion of Australians who go hiking/bushwalking has sky-rocketed over the last five years. What’s more, it appears not to be a fad, but an actual lifestyle choice. In fact, the latest findings from Roy Morgan Research indicate that people w...ho hike/bushwalk even tend to take holidays where they can enjoy the Great Outdoors in its myriad forms. Between October 2010 and September 2015, the proportion of Australians 14+ who reported going hiking/bushwalking on a regular basis grew from 2.9% to 5.2%, while those who participated either regularly or occasionally increased from 15.6% to 27.3% (or more than 5.3 million Australians). When asked what activities they did on their last trip, regular/occasional hikers/bushwalkers were consistently more likely than the average Australian to nominate active, outdoor pursuits. For example, they are 84% more likely than the average Aussie to have visited wilderness of some kind on their last trip, 81% more likely to have gone to a National Park or forest and of course 135% more likely to have gone bushwalking. Source: Roy Morgan Single Source (Australia), October 2014 September 2015 (n=15,668). NB: Chart shows the index of the target profile group compared to population average, with 100 being the average.

03.01.2022 The final push through the Morwell NP was a breeze being it’s flat and the river crossings more predictable. A pleasant surprise at the 122 marker with a cascade dropping out of the side of the hill which none of the group had seen before. Home straight from Billy’s Creek Weir / Morwell Weir, the name discrepancy is for another post. #morwellnationalpark #grandstrzeleckitrack #billyscreekweir #latrobecity #bushwalkingadventures #bushwalkingvictoria

03.01.2022 The United Nations has proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests to celebrate and raise awareness of their importance. 02.01.2022 ‘Important information for hikers’ as at 25th of March 2021 ROAD CLOSURES Tarra Valley Road was closed due to extreme high rainfall causing the Tarra River to breach its banks and wash parts of the road away. Although the road has reopened, there are some side slippages, unusual water flows from bank walls, impacts to the asphalt road surface and debris that may be slippery, therefore due care must be taken both on foot and by vehicle.... TRACK CONDITIONS Extreme high rainfall means all creek levels will be high and fast flowing for possibly a week. Extreme high winds means risk of falling trees and branches.
