05.01.2022 In this week’s Member Monday feature we get to know about Dennis Browne (with an E), legend, past player and supporter. Involvement in Grange: past player and current supporter. Number of games played: 123 ... Cap number: 37 Favourite thing about Grange? Great memories, catching up with mates & friends, watching with Lyn and family, grandsons Jacob & Brodie play for the Dolphins. Biggest influence on your cricket career? Father - Des, a left-handed opening batsman who kept wickets and captained the SA Police Cricket Team for well over a decade and former Australian leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett, a good friend of my fathers. When did you first start at Grange and what or who brought you to the club? Shortly before the start of the 1969-70 season, received a surprise visit at the Lockleys Police Station one Saturday morning from Barry Fry who enticed me to leave West Torrens and play for Grange. What was the highlight of your career on field? Winning Grand Finals and playing in the same side as my son Craig and batting with him out in the middle on more than one occasion. What was the most memorable moment off field? Celebrating for a couple of weeks after the club one it’s first A-Grade Premiership. (See the attached images for the ‘We Were There’ poem written by Dennis Browne with an E and Bubbled Booth) Who was your toughest opposition? Brighton was always tough to beat but when we did, we also celebrated, perhaps longer than we should have. Who was the best player you played with and who was the best player you played against? Bob Simunsen was the best I played with and former West Torrens team-mate Dean Smith (fast bowler) was the best I played against. What is one piece of advice you would give to up and coming Dolphins? Always respect your team-mates and opposition and play hard but fair. Represent the club with pride and distinction and never do anything or act in a way that will disgrace the club. What’s one thing you can’t live without? Family, mates and friends. Outside of cricket, what have been your career highlights? Being lucky enough to represent the SA sporting media as a broadcaster and journalist for 50 years and being presented with the SANFL Media Gold Medal Award by Max Basheer in his last year as President in 2002. What is your favourite meal? Lamb roast (from legendary Fry’s Henley Beach Butcher Shop) with all the veggies and trimmings.
