22.01.2022 FREDS BIG RUN 2020 ~ in honour of Ian Gimm This August, twenty-one GBSS staff members are teaming up, lacing up their joggers and hitting the trails to cover a massive 100km to raise awareness for blindness. Annually, GBSS recognises the contribution of Ian Gimm to advocacy and lobbying for equal rights, equal opportunities and accessibility issues for people with a disability, not only i...n our community but Australia wide. Ian Gimm had a complete visions impairment but he did not let that hold him back. So, in light of covid 19 restrictions our staff will complete the Freds Big Run 100km challenge across the month as our display of recognition for the late Ian Gimm. Our staff will be completing the challenge solo or as teams and will be covering either 50 or 100km across the month. Meet our team below and track their progress across the month! 07.01.2022 UPDATED HEALTH ADVICE To help prevent any further spread of COVID-19, Queenslanders must minimise the number of people they come into contact with. On...ly leave your home if its absolutely necessary. You can do so with members of your household or with one other person who is not a member of your household. Permitted reasons to leave your home are listed below. For a residence or household, the number of people allowed to gather in that house is limited to the usual members of that household, plus two other visitors who are family or close friends. We strongly urge people aged over 70, anybody over 65 with a chronic disease, and Indigenous people over 50 to stay at home for their own protection. You are now only allowed to leave your home if absolutely necessary for the following permitted reasons. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in a fine up to $1,330 for individuals and $6,670 for corporations. > To obtain essential goods and services > Receive medical treatment or health care services > Exercise > Do work or volunteering that is essential and cannot be done from home (this is any type of work that is not restricted under the latest non-essential business activity and undertaking closure direction) > Visit another persons home, as long as there are no more than 2 visitors who do not usually live there > Visit a terminally ill relative or attend a funeral > Assist, care for or support immediate family members > Attend a Court or tribunal or comply with a Court or tribunal order > Attend a childcare facility, school, university, or other educational institution to receive instruction that is not possible to receive at home > Assist with an investigation by police or other law enforcement authority > All shared custody arrangements of children under 18 years of age, whether informal or court-ordered, can continue as normal. You are allowed to leave home to take children from one parents home to the other parents home > To avoid illness, injury or the risk of harm > To comply with directions of a government agency.

05.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK 2020 Theme: Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. For more information please see https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme

03.01.2022 Sinead Burke is a disability rights activist and teacher. She has combined her love of education and style to campaign for more representation of diversity in the fashion industry. Born in Dublin, Sinead has achondroplasia a genetic condition which causes restricted growth and is 3 5 tall. She refers to herself as a little person and knew she wanted to be a teacher after her first day at school. She has used the classroom environment to discuss openly with her pupils... the issues surrounding disability.
