Tax-free payments of $750 to social security, veteran and other income support recipients and eligible concession card holders. It is estimated that around half of those who will benefit will be pensioners. These payments will commence to be automatically made from 31 March 2020. Administrative relief from the ATO for some tax obligations for people affected by the Coronavirus outbreak, on a case-by-case basis. 14.01.2022 BEWARE: We received this letter today from a business which is making money from unsuspecting people. The letter looks like it could be from a Government agency, but its not. Theyre offering to renew your business registration and charging you a jacked up price $99 for a one year registration or $199 for 3 years. If you renew your business name yourself, a process that takes a few clicks on the official ASIC site, it only costs $35 for one year or $82 for 3 years. Ho...wever, if you go through this business it will cost you an extra $64 for a one year registration or $117 for a 3 year one! While they are not doing anything illegal, theyre profiting by acting as a middle-man for something that is very easy to do. An unsuspecting person could be forgiven for thinking the letter is from a Government agency when it states down the bottom it is not. Feel free to pass this on and share this post so other businesses dont end up paying more than they should. See more

13.01.2022 Scam emails are constantly doing the rounds, this time purporting to be from ASIC. The picture below details what it looks like. If youre ever unsure if an email is genuine: - look at the email address its coming from. Its usually not the same as the organisation is purporting to be from and/or it may be a variation of it - hover over (but NEVER) click the links in the email. Once again, the link wont be linked to the organisation the scammer is purporting to be fro...m. Be careful, as the methods these scammers are using are becoming more sophisticated and are very similar to the ones the genuine organisations issue. Dont open or reply to emails where youre unsure of the sender or click on links within these emails. http://asic.gov.au//servic/scams-targeting-asic-customers/

12.01.2022 Considering registering as an Uber driver? If so, youll have to register for an ABN and GST and charge GST to your customers. The Federal Court today handed down its decision in Uber B.V v FC of T. The ruling means Uber drivers will have to charge, account for and remit GST on the amount their customers pay, regardless of their turnover (unlike other businesses where there is a $75,000 turnover threshold). This brings them in line with taxi drivers for GST accounting and reporting purposes.

09.01.2022 The ATOs data matching program continues. Now theyre data matching motor vehicle sales and purchases. The ATO will acquire information for the 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years, on vehicles that have been transferred or newly registered where the purchase price or market value is equal to or greater than $10,000. Data will be acquired from the eight state and territory motor vehicle registry authorities. It is estimated that records of 1.5 million individuals in... each year will be electronically matched with ATO data holdings to identify non-compliance with obligations under tax and superannuation laws. The Gazette notice for the data matching program notes the objectives which include: obtaining intelligence about taxpayers buying and selling motor vehicles to identify risks and trends of non-compliance with tax and super obligations identifying and addressing taxpayers buying and selling vehicles who may not be meeting their obligations to register and lodge returns (including activity statements) and ensure the correct reporting of income and entitlement to deductions and input tax credits identifying taxpayers of interest for investigation, such as sellers, licenced dealers, fleet managers, leasing companies or representatives of these taxpayers to determine if interposed proxy ownership is used to conceal the real accumulation of wealth identifying taxpayers who have not met obligations regarding GST, fringe benefits tax, luxury car tax, fuel schemes and income tax. 06.01.2022 Its with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our founding partners, Clem Hunting at 92 years of age. Clem was admitted as a partner of the firm, then known as CW Beer Partners, in 1951 and helped grow the business over many years. Clem retired as a partner in 1986, but continued on, working as the firms consultant for another 8 years. During this time Clem made many friendships and helped numerous local businesses with their tax and accounting needs. Even... after his retirement in 1994, Clems interest in the goings on in the firm did not cease. He was a regular visitor on Wednesday mornings, to have a cup of tea and catch up with the partners and staff before his game of golf. Clem was also a regular at our Christmas party functions, only absent when his health prevented him from attending. Even at age 90, he still enjoyed a Christmas VB or two. Clem was an outstanding contributor to the local community, having been a long-term member of the Murwillumbah Golf Club and a member of the Lions Club of Murwillumbah for over 51 years. In December 1994, Clem was awarded with life membership of Lions, for his lengthy and unwavering service to the local community. Clems integrity and values form the foundations of our firm today. We are proud and privileged to have known and worked alongside Clem and he leaves us with many fond memories. Our thoughts go out to his wife Shirley and his family. RIP Clem, you will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
