23.01.2022 Artist Julie Rrap opens her exhibition 'Blow Back' tonight at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Paddington. Thursday 7 June, 6 - 8pm Exhibition dates: 7 June 7 July, 2018... "These portraits represent a collective performance act that uses breath as an action that is both gentle yet provocative. The performers’ open mouths mock the endless images of women posed in this way to suggest their receptivity; like a vessel waiting to be filled. In ‘Blow Back’ their breath is materialized like the capturing of a sound; a unique expression of their voice; a silent protest." Julie Rrap Artist’s Biography Julie Rrap has been a major figure in Australian contemporary art for over three decades. Notable solo exhibitions include, ‘Remaking the World’, Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne (2015); ‘Rrapture’, Newcastle Art Gallery (2014); ‘Julie Rrap: Off Balance’, Lismore Regional Gallery (2011); and ‘Body Double’, a major retrospective held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2007). Rrap was included in the ‘Australian Show’ (1988) which toured to the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Germany and major museums in Japan. Other significant group exhibitions include ‘Every Brilliant Eye: Australian Art of the 1990s’, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2017); ‘Under the Sun: Reimagining Max Dupain’s Sunbaker’ (touring), Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney; State Library of NSW, Sydney; Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne (2017); ‘Biometrics’, New Media Gallery, Anvil Centre, Vancouver (2014); ’Theatre of the World’, Museum of Old and New Art, Tasmania; and La Maison Rouge, Paris (2013-14); the 14th Jakarta Biennale (2011); ’Revolutions Forms That Turn’, curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, 16th Biennale of Sydney (2008); ‘Turbulence’, the 3rd Auckland Triennial (2007); ‘Fieldwork: Australian Art 1968 2002, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2002); and ‘Systems End: Contemporary Art in Australia’ which toured Japan and Korea in 1996. Rrap’s work is held in major public collections as well as many corporate and private collections. Rrap was selected for the prestigious Clemenger Contemporary Art Award at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2009. Her video work, 360 Self Portrait won the 2009 University of Queensland National Artists Self-Portrait Prize. ’Blow Back’ will be Julie Rrap’s thirteenth solo exhibition with Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery. This exhibition has been supported by the Australian Council. This exhibition is also sponsored by Tanqueray.

13.01.2022 Liam Garstang has an exhibition opening today from 6-8pm at Dominik Mersch Gallery. 'The Shepherd's Crook' is on from June 21 to July 21, 2018. From the Gallery: "Garstang's new works are truly trans-disciplinary; resolving concepts into striking installations that involve sculpture, video, ceramics, and printmedia. These works are based on personal, generational, and collective events and iconography, as well as the excavation of emotional responses to his family home in Dow...nside, New South Wales. A strong sense of the performative also underpins his work, oriented around notions of ritualisation, presence and gesture." www.dominikmerschgallery.com/exhibition/new-works-18/

03.01.2022 Artist John A Douglas is opening his show 'The Nine Circles' tomorrow at Chalk Horse Gallery in Darlinghurst from 6-8pm The Nine Circles by John A. Douglas is epic theatre, distilled to video and photomedia. Its canonical tropes are all there: a maligned protagonist; a journey across time and space; encounters with advocates and tormentors; contests and challenges; an internal battle of the psyche, all intermingle with the accumulated experience of an individual living an ext...raordinary life in a literally extra-ordinary body. Following almost a decade of being physically grounded on Australian soil due to renal failure, Douglas was very quickly after his recovery from the transplant operation deemed fit to fly. His location shoots have since included The Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan, the Osoyoos Lakes in British Columbia in Canada and Hadrian’s Villa in Rome. These places and others, across several continents, have become variously the backdrops and material for the construction of the mis-en-scene for these works, in which digital collage is used to unite significant sites, histories, characters and filmic and literary references from disparate eras and locations. The primary site for this work is however, the artist’s own body, within and through which these accumulations of context, knowledge, history and memory are expressed. www.gallery.mailchimp.com///JAD_The_Nine_Circles_final.pdf
