24.01.2022 I finally finished planting Tif Dwarf runners into my home golf green today. Tif Dwarf is a miniature couch grass commonly used for bowling greens. Have a look at the pics - it's tiny compared to standard Santa Ana couch I planted around the outside of the green 3 months ago - I wanted to get it thickened up and established so the Santa Ana couch that surrounds it will find it hard to penetrate and grow through it. ... With some 2Spec Establsh fertiliser, lots of water and encouragement, the green will hopefully be fully covered by March.

14.01.2022 Hi everyone, Happy Easter! I've been quiet on my page of late, but behind the scenes things have been really busy. Today's the 2nd of April - on this day next year Martine and I will be getting married in our garden at home. So there's been a lot of work done to build our lawn and gardens, and to get everything established for our big day. ... So, I thought I'd show you some progress pics. I think we've achieved a lot in the past 12 months. When reflecting on the progress made, we're excited to see how everything will be in 12 months time. This time last year, our yard was dirt, apart from a few trees and shrubs that we chose to keep and feature in our new garden. A lot of soil was brought in and moved around to sculpt the lawn and gardens. I installed an irrigation system to irrigate them. Because the yard is also on a slope, I made a subtle spoon drain across the lawn, and a "smile" drain at the bottom of the golf green, so any excess water could get away more easily and not waterlog the soil. The lawn area was cored, with lime applied to raise the pH to neutral, and improved with lots of organic-rich, sandy-loam soil and some gypsum. Last October I scarified my Mum and Dad's Santa Ana lawn, and used the scarifying debris to plant my own lawn. I also planted some Tif Dwarf into an area I've prepared as a home golf putting green. Both the lawn and golf green have a little bit of filling in to do, but it is all 95% covered and established. I've applied a fertiliser to help prepare it for winter, sprayed a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent winter weeds, and sprayed a fungicide to help prevent fungal diseases. So, my attention has now turned to laying brick edging to separate the couch from the raised garden beds, and provide a nice clean, curved edge. We still have work ahead of us, with lots more projects to start and complete. I hope your lawns have done well this growing season.

13.01.2022 It's been a hectic 3 months. I've visited over 100 properties (over 150 lawns) these past 3 months, many of them requiring multiple visits, as well as working full time with my greenkeeping jobs. I've travelled far and wide - Lysterfield to Ballarat, Frankston to Bendigo. I haven't managed to help everyone - I've been stretched a bit thin and havent been able to catch up or keep up with demand. In one way its great to be in demand, but on the other hand I hate letting people... down. Regardless, I hope you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy your lawns and the fun you can have on them. For me it's time for a break, to relax and to work on my own lawns and gardens

09.01.2022 Sarah wanted her lawns fixed up in preparation for listing her house for sale. Her lawns looked like ... um ...shit (her words, not mine, though I didn't disagree ). So, I scalped the kikuyu turf, topdressed with a sandy loam soil to level out the lumps and bumps, sowed ryegrass seed, raked and rolled it in, then gave it a feed with 2Spec Establish fertiliser.... The rye should show signs of germination within 2 weeks, and the kikuyu will respond well and grow through. It'll be interesting to see how well they come up in a months time. I did the same thing at my previous house - feedback from the buyer and agent said it gave the property much greater appeal.

08.01.2022 Yesterday I cored and scarified Cameron's Santa Ana couch lawn. He's keen for an even better surface for his family's Christmas lawn bowls event. Scarifying helps to clean dead matter out of the turf, remove thatch and promote new growth. With a bit of topdressing and leveling, this lawn will look like carpet in no time

07.01.2022 Hello to all my Melbourne friends. With covid case numbers reducing, and the prospects of eased restrictions improving, I'm starting the planning process so we can get your lawn renovations completed. For those who don't know, I live in Bendigo, but I conduct road trips to various areas of Greater Melbourne on weekends throughout Spring and early Summer, visiting up to 7 clients each day. This saves me from charging travel costs - keeping the service economical for everyone.... In order to schedule my trips, I need to know where I'm going first. Many of you have already contacted me to arrange a visit. The demand has been awesome. However, I do have room for more. So, if you would like me to help you with your lawns, please make a comment below stating your suburb. I will then collate all the requests, schedule my trips with proposed dates, and will contact you all. Bendigo and central Vic friends - weekdays are reserved for you, so feel free to send me a message to my inbox for any requests. Cheers, Greg * contact-free of course

06.01.2022 This is how you do it folks I cored Hudson's Santa Ana couch lawn yesterday, and the cores revealed the layers of topdressing sand he has used over recent years. He has nice soil underneath which holds most of the moisture and nutrients - so the turf roots grow deep in search for them. The sand provides surface drainage and levels out any uneveness. Sand in the core holes allows air, water and nutrients to get down into the soil below. ... No wonder his lawn always looks nice!
