22.01.2022 LILLI PILLI OVAL UPGRADE AND REJUVENATION PROJECT UPDATE Over the past several weeks there have been many advances in our Lilli Pilli Oval upgrade project. 1) I...n early March, the Sutherland Shire Mayor issued a Press Release regarding Synthetic pitch proposals that had been recently before Council. With regard to Lilli Pilli Oval, Mayor Steve Simpson said "Lilli Pilli Football Club (LPFC) was the first local football club in the Shire to seriously pursue a solution to enhance all weather playability and to overcome the problems associated with recurrent damage to its turf based home ground, Lilli Pilli Oval. LPFC is the largest football club in the Shire with the oval providing over 30 hours a week of combined football training and competition during the winter season. This use exceeds the carrying capacity of the oval for almost the entire season and the result is that the turf is unable to recover each year. Significant time and money has been spent by council over the years in repairing and returfing the grounds to bring it back to a safe condition for players. There is also the ongoing need to keep the field watered during times of drought. The solution is a new synthetic surface which will create a sustainable and long lasting community facility to improve the playing field conditions and minimise the ongoing cost to ratepayers in renovating the site each summer, the Mayor said. Under the terms of a licence management agreement between LPFC and council, LPFC will provide the funding for the installation of the synthetic field and the ongoing maintenance of the facility and council will undertake a number of infrastructure upgrades associated with the project such as upgrading the public toilets, providing new seating and pathways, improving site entries and carparking as well as replacing fencing. I applaud LPFC for initiating this project. The proposed specification, design and installation technique of a field this size is not currently installed anywhere in Australia but offers an affordable solution and will set a community standard which other local sports clubs can achieve, the Mayor said The facility will be open to the general public and LPFC will work with all the current users of the oval including the Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association and Lilli Pilli Public School to maintain their use of the oval as well facilitate its use for other potential users. 2) The St.George and Sutherland Shire Leader picked up the story and reported on the intentions of Lilli Pilli FC and on the comments and plans agreed to by council. 3) In Mid March, following invitations to residents in neighbouring streets, Lilli Pilli Football Club conducted an information meeting where the background, objectives and details of the project were detailed. There was a lot of constructive discussion leading to a number of suggestions being incorporated into the club's broader plan to manage Lilli Pilli Oval. 4) Lilli Pilli FC has also been partnering with a leading Australian-based synthetic turf manufacturer Grassman and installation partners, to plan the deployment of synthetic turf on Lilli Pilli Oval. This includes establishing a working understanding of the design and scope of works involved. 5) Lilli Pilli FC is currently working with the Sutherland Shire Council to finalise the management agreement referred to in the Mayor's March announcement. 6) Club members are invited to a General Meeting on 19th May 2014. At this General meeting normal club business will be conducted followed by full briefing and information session on the club's Lilli Pilli Oval Upgrade project. Further details regarding the time and venue for this meeting will be relayed to club members over the coming weeks.
