25.01.2022 Since I'm again in Phuket with time to spare, it might be time to impart a small piece of new found wisdom. You may have worked this out long ago, I'm a slow learner. If you've been to any part of Asia, and found yourself in traffic, do you edge across busy streets, dodging a million oncoming scooters, cars and trucks going every which way, hoping they will take pity on you? Many of us visitors have watched fascinated as locals successfully navigate this phenomenon with con...summate ease and wondered how they manage to cross the busy streets like cats with nine lives. This might help some, and it seems to be working for me. I've been crossing to the local night market behind Jungceylon, opposite the boxing stadium, (eating is always my priority) and it's a wide street where the traffic moves quickly. I can't describe it in terms of lanes, as you might know these don't exist in Phuket in any meaningful way. But this is not your imagined potholed Denpasar to Kuta goat track, but a wide, smooth street. Here's the trick; look for a person or persons, a group is best. If no one is around, just wait, there soon will be, it's Asia remember. Hurry up and get beside them. When they make a dash, go with them. Keep close to them, they won't notice, they are focussed on what they are doing. Remember, it's life or death. Whatever you do don't look at the traffic, that's their job. Look only at your host. Stop if they do, don't leave a gap, stay close, like a tick on a wallaby. If you do this you won't have to worry about crossing the road again. Stay safe! See more

24.01.2022 Old photos found on my website. I'm trying to get them all together, my photos are stretched out over a few ancient discarded devices including but not limited to computers, iPads and iPhones. Such is the digital age!

23.01.2022 Well I quickly made this painting of Picnic Point Toowoomba, but it turned out to be jacarandas, because my niece loves them too!

16.01.2022 Some Days are Diamonds I put off a dental visit until this morning after experiencing some mild gum discomfort last week. While its common knowledge I have all my dental work done in Thailand these past couple of years, I had to ask for recommendations in Cairns since my regular dentist started making mistakes as well as expensive remedial suggestions. So my highly recommended new Cairns dentist firstly takes some X rays, after rubbishing my Thai dental team, then begins a l...engthy explanation outlining the possible removal of teeth (near the front), some extensive bone grafting involving surgery of course, followed by dental implants eighteen months down the track while sporting a lovely gappy smile. And that will be $240 thanks. He refers me to a periodontal specialist, convincing me that it's a matter of great urgency. Lucky for me the said specialist had a cancellation at 1 pm today, but by this time I could barely walk from trying to take in all this awful news and had to call Peter to drive me there. True story. The unexpectedly casual and charming periodontist already has my X-ray up on his monitor. Well that's a relief because normally every man and his dog wants another $300 for a new X-ray. He then proceeds to examine my mouth and floss some junk out between the offending teeth and proscribe a new cleaning regime for my very healthy teeth. And here's some free samples, and your tiny tiny account. Nothing to see here. Outside in a few minutes, a few tears of relief were shed as I realised we would not be living on baked beans for the next few years and living in a cardboard box. See more

14.01.2022 So, I'm about to start using this page as a blog when funny things might happen in my life. Not in any particular order, just as the mood might strike me. Sometimes it will be about travelling, and since I'm in Thailand, let's begin here. Locals living in Patong tend to get over the hill to Phuket Town in a songthieuw. Tourists catch on after a while, because it's so cheap. And authentic, or whatever. Songthieuws are like a basic tray truck with a flat timber bed and a canop...Continue reading
