24.01.2022 If you've been asleep for the last 17 days; it's now 2020... and if you have been asleep, I'm a bit jealous. :) With the new year, comes technology changes. #Windows7 has stopped being supported by Microsoft, and the USA's NSA has found a severe encryption bug in #Windows10. (*What does it do? See below.) So what does all this mean? It means you need to update Windows.... Windows 7: There will be no more updates to this OS (barring exceptional circumstances). So make sure you have the most up to date version of it by running Windows Update. Windows 10: There is an update "released in January 2020" for this critical issue. So make sure you search for updates to get this patch. *What does that bug allow? It means that servers (ie: websites) can use someone else's security certificate. So you could be on E-bay, but have Amazon's security padlock showing next to the address. But if you only thought you were on E-bay, when you were on a bad guys website... what information would you enter? (Interestingly, Firefox isn't impacted by this bug. While every other browser, plus Windows itself, appears to be.)

22.01.2022 PSA: Be aware, there is malware being spread under the guise of volunteer and humanitarian groups offering COVID-19 testing. The claim is that you can get more info by downloading an attached or linked document - which (currently) is an information-stealer done in a macro. (It even waits ~20 seconds before it gets the bad stuff to make it harder to detect)... #TrickBot #malware #CoronaVirus #COVID19

18.01.2022 #Wattpad data breach exposes account info for millions of users Bios, Dates of birth, Email addresses, Genders, Geographic locations, IP addresses, Names, Passwords, Social media profiles, User website URLs, Usernames. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//wattpad-data-breach-exp/... #information #security

16.01.2022 FYI: The #Thunderspy #thunderbolt flaw affects all computers regardless of operating system, created from 2011 onward. (Provided someone has physical access to the machine. An "Evil-Maid" as they call it.) Unlike a previous thunderbolt #exploit, this one doesn't require any tricking of the user. #Intel won't be software-patching this either (possibly because they can't). #evilmaid #exploits #computersecurity

14.01.2022 Use #WordPress? Well, there is another plugin that is actively being exploited. "File Manager" #exploits ref: https://arstechnica.com//hackers-are-exploiting-a-critica/

13.01.2022 PSA: Windows Zero-day exploit. (All current Windows versions) It seems that there are two remote code execution issues in the Adobe Type Manager Library that comes with all versions of Windows. The short term sidestep for this is to disable the preview pane in the file explorer (& probably email as well), as a user viewing/previewing a specifically crafted file could be used to utilise this vulnerability.... Side note: Windows 10 is less vulnerable than Windows 7 (the primary target), but there is an update coming for this issue regardless. 13.01.2022 PSA: WordPress site owners who are using commercial themes from ThemeGrill should update the "ThemeGrill Demo Importer" to patch a critical bug that can let attackers access their administration account. (And therefore, do anything to your site.)

10.01.2022 Power drop out over the weekend? Imagine if that happened while you were working on something important. A UPS* would help with that. They come in all shapes and sizes to protect and supply power to your devices throughout your office and home. Get in contact with us to find out more. *UPS: Uninterruptible Power Supply

09.01.2022 Did you know that Adobe Flash will be officially unsupported as of the end of this year? That means no more security updates for the hacker/malware sponge that Flash has become. Adobe has also decided that "Flash-based content will be blocked from running in Adobe Flash Player after the EOL Date". If you rely on Flash for anything important, get in touch to see how we can help you migrate away from it.... Ref: https://www.adobe.com//produc/flashplayer/end-of-life.html

06.01.2022 With catastrophic fire conditions forecast for tomorrow, remember to have your backups in your things to take if something happens. If you have a good backup plan, you should already have a copy of your data offsite. If you have a in-situ item you need to take with you (small NAS devices, USB hard drives etc.), then know how to disconnect it ahead of time. Note: With these devices, you may not have time to properly shut them down - so don't get fancy, just pull the plugs/cables and get moving. Lives are more important.

02.01.2022 One of my youngest supporters made a company flag. The business has really made it to the big leagues now!

02.01.2022 #COVIDSafe is a bit of a contentious topic at the moment, so I looked around for insight, and found these posts by Troy Hunt, the founder of haveibeenpwnd & Casey Ellis, founder of Bug Crowd. I hold both their views in high esteem for the data/internet security field. The outcomes of their thoughts are: they are installing it. Casey stated that, while he doesn't have the data to say "it's safe", that he believes the benefits outweigh the possible downsides. He also noted that... this only works if everyone has it. Implying that without a certain level of adoption, it's not going to be effective. Troy went for a more practical testing approach, and installed the app. He wrote: "The only registration data collected is name, age range and postcode followed by mobile phone number verification. This is all that's *explicitly* provided so as far as "how much info does the gov have on me" goes this is obviously nothing not already known (a tiny subset of it)." Troy also notes that while bluetooth access is requested, geolocation isn't. Meaning that the app won't have map coordinates for where you are; but only be able to recognise those people with the app that are within bluetooth range (which is: under 10m, ignoring interference). So I believe I will be installing it. (ps. I would imagine that it won't function correctly in the background on iOS if you have background refresh off)
