13.01.2022 Annual ryegrass the gift that keeps on giving! Last year was an exceptional year for annual ryegrass and given the rainfall in December 2020, they have kept growing and producing. But all things must come to an end. Many producers will be tempted to let these stands run and try and get them to go through winter 2021. This strategy is fraught with danger for two reasons.... Firstly as the annuals are predisposed to die out, they are only producing reproductive growth at the moment which is of lower quality. Livestock performance is lower on these senescing stands. Secondly they will produce a mountain of seed which then becomes a massive volunteer problem for the next phase of the pasture development. It is very frustrating to plant more expensive seed and have it choked out by volunteer annual ryegrass. As good as the ryegrass still looks you will be grossly disappointed for winter feed this year if you keep the stand, so take some sagely advice and knock them over quickly.

We also knew that some weeds were going to proliferate after the prolonged dry with minimal competition when it rained. 05.01.2022 Annual ryegrass. To keep or not to keep!

03.01.2022 The importance of checking your pastures after being down cannot be overstated. We all know that weeds are a problem this year , but we are seeing some insect pressure about as well. For only the second time in 26 years I have seen slug damage in newly down pastures. Grey field slugs are a real issue for cropping people especially those that sow large areas of canola as they are regarded as an annual pest. In pastures we rarely see them, but when they are present they certain...ly do some major damage to seed and emerging seedlings. The combination of a very wet start to the year and high residual trash levels on most paddocks has given them the perfect platform to do their thing. The paddock in the video is testament to the destruction that they cause , and will need to be redone with some slug baits down the tube. We will keep you posted on the result.
