The leaves are glossy, dark grey-green above and paler below. The clusters of tubular creamy white flowers are present in spring and summer. 20.01.2022 Acacia prominens 15 Acacia prominens were planted by the Moore Reserve Bushcare Group last weekend. Acacia prominens is a shrub growing 3-6m. It's lemon yellow globular flowers can be seen between July - Septmber. It is listed as an endangered population under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 so we are helping to care for this species of wattle.... The Moore Reserve Bushcare Group meet 1st Sunday of each month from 8.15am to 12.15pm. The next session is 4th October. 20.01.2022 #WeedWednesday Ochna serrulata Ochna is a very hardy weed which is in flower now! ... It is a small woody shrub with rough pimply-textured bark. It has alternately arranged leaves with finely toothed margins. Its bright yellow flowers (2-3 cm across) have five petals, five sepals and numerous stamens. The sepals are initially green, but they turn bright red as the fruit develop. The small fruit (5-8 mm long) turn from green to black as they mature. This is a significant environmental weed in Sydney. The seeds of Ochna are bird dispersed, allowing it to be readily dispersed from garden plantings into nearby bushland. 19.01.2022 The Buddha Light International Association (BLIA) recently joined us for a guided bush walk through Carss Bush Park with their Joey Group. Their theme this term is environmental sustainability so they got in touch so their children could explore the beautiful bush and foreshore area. 19.01.2022 Little Wattlebird The Little Wattlebird is a medium to large honeyeater, but is the smallest of the wattlebirds around 28cm. It is mostly dark grey-brown above, with faint white shafts on each of the feathers. The underparts are grey and are heavily streaked with white. These honeyeaters like to visit Oatley Park when the Banksias are flowering. ... 18.01.2022 #WeedWednesday Green Cestrum Cestrum parqui... This straggly woody shrub grows to 3m tall and has light green alternate leaves which have an unpleasant smell when crushed. It has sprays of yellow tubular flowers and shiny black egg shaped berries. It can be controlled by hand removal or using the cut and paint technique. 15.01.2022 Turpentine Syncarpia glomulifera ssp. glomulifera This tall, handsome tree is currently in flower by our Bushcare office.... Growing to over 40m high, this common Australian tree has dark, fibrous bark with dull grey-green foliage. Its olive, non-droopy fliage makes iot easy to distinguish from surrounding Eucalypts. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and has prominent creamy white flowers from September - November.

Boneseed is an erect, perennial shrub with the ability to aggressively invade native bushland in Australia. Boneseed has the ability to aggressively invade native bushland in Australia. Its vigorous growth and ability to regenerate and spread quickly in disturbed situations, such as fire or clearing, allows it to outcompete native species. 06.01.2022 Habitat Habitat provides a place for animals to shelter, feed and breed. Natural areas have a large number of animals because of the huge range of habitats. Leaf litter can provide protection for a lizard from a hunting hungry cat. ... Weeds such as blackberry and lantana provide a retreat from predators and a safe nersting site for many small birds. These therefore require a staged removal process. Tree hollows ar invaluable for many species including the Powerful Owl. This species nest in large tree hollows with a depth of at least 0.5 m which are in large eucalypts with a diameter at breast height of 80-240 cm. Trees are usually least 150 years old to have hollows of this size. Post your photos below of local habitat you've seen............

02.01.2022 Today's Evatt Park planting! Thank you to our wonderful Bushcare volunteers who continued planting around Webbs Dam. Four volunteers installed 50 plants including Dianella caerulea, Persoonia linifolia, Lomandra longifolia and Grevillea sericea. In addition to the plants and weeding, we also installed small signs to inform people we are caring for this area and a temporary barrier so the plantings can establish.... Thank you to Sue, Ken, Ross and Leo.

01.01.2022 Thank you to our Nomad Bushcare Group! This morning the Nomad's worked at Depot Road Reserve, Mortdale, where they weeded through the native vegetation islands, removed warty Madeira Vine (see pic below) and scattered Kangaroo Grass seed heads to encourage germination. Would you like to help? The Nomads rotate between numerous sites every Wednesday from 8am to 11am.
