19.01.2022 Welcome to our shores, little one The first southern right whale calf of the season was spotted at Portland this morning. Each year, southern right whales sp...end time off the coast around Warrnambool and Portland during the winter months. Warrnambools Logans Beach serves as a special spot, with mothers returning year after year to give birth and nurse their young there. Last year, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Plannings Mandy Watson said there were signs Portland may be becoming a favoured spot for the cows give birth at and raise their young as well. Land-based whaling in Australia initially concentrated on southern right whales. They get their name because they were the right whale to catch: they were slow-swimming, floated when dead, and provided large amounts of valuable products particularly oil for illumination and lubrication.
