21.01.2022 The elusive and oh so rare Western Ground Parrot captured on candid camera!

20.01.2022 From paddock to bush! And not just any old bush It was pretty thrilling to drive past a secret spot last week to check out how things were going at my very first translocation site, a place I hadn't been to in more than 15 years. We put a few special plant species in here back in the day and, according to a case study I read, they are (mostly) doing amazingly well. At the time, I was also keen to restore the community they live in, and so planted and encouraged the assoc...iated species - and you can see the result! This despite the fact that the site floods in winter, bakes like cement in summer, was covered in weed, home to bunnies and everything is susceptible to Dieback! Did I mention it also has underlying ironstone only a couple of cm beneath the soil surface? Judging by the great big fence that's been put there now to keep the riff-raff out, I'd say things are going well for this little community! Feeling pretty happy - look what we can do when we try

14.01.2022 How many species do you recognise? This fantastic footage of visitors to a Banksia inflorescence shows just how important these plants are for our native fauna.

09.01.2022 So here on the left we have healthy bush with impressively tall Banksia grandis, Balga and other beauties. On the right is the same type of bush after Dieback a pale shade of its former self. We often don’t even know what we’ve lost, we just accept what we see as being all there is. How can you help keep our bush healthy? Don’t spread soil - stick to the tracks and sunny, dry days. If mud and soil are sticking to your car tyres or boots, you could be spreading disease. ...Arrive Clean, Leave Clean! For more information on Dieback and what you can do, check out https://www.dwg.org.au. If you'd like help to identify or treat Dieback in your own bush, please contact us.

08.01.2022 These are our Superstars! Following on from earlier research that saw us subject seedlings from these hardy Banksia coccinea surviving in Phytophthora Dieback infested bush to deliberate inoculation, we returned this week to collect more seed. These plants produced offspring that survived not one but two inoculations of P. cinnamoni, making them likely lads for a bit more of a look. The bags are protecting maturing seed cones from black cockatoos who also love them! In the meantime, we will experiment with cross pollination and cuttings to further our understanding of Dieback resistance.

03.01.2022 Now this makes sense! Next week in Albany

02.01.2022 This little possum took wandering out yonder to heart last week and had quite the adventure! Turning up in a garden in North Perth she raised eyebrows - either quite a range extension, or a possum out of place! Critically endangered Western Ringtail Possums are found from Mandurah to the south coast, but their stronghold populations are Busselton and Albany. Quick thinking by Torbay Catchment Group, who know their possums well, and a few questions put to the neighbours so...on determined she was indeed an intrepid explorer, having hitched a ride up from Albany. Despite the appeal of heritage roses our friend was quite happy to make the journey home again, thanks to Native Animal Rescue and a family of Dr Doolittles. And a timely reminder to check the car for hitchhikers before you head home after holidays! Photos: Brianna Randell and Marianne Holzherr
